I was born and raised in the Springs. The only way to have a relationship with my father was to talk Broncos. In 1st grade I read in the Weekly Reader that the Redskins won the Superbowl so I was a Redskins fan untill the 7th grade when I played football on the Memorial Park Steelers and have been a fan of the Steelers since. But, I have always followed the Broncos closely since the quarter back controversy Ramsey or Weese was settled with Morton. My father would have loved this sight. He died when Shanahan replaced Plumber with Cutler. Coincidence maybe, or maybe he couldn't handle what has transpired since.
I moved to SW missouri in 1996 and have been here in Chiefs land ever since. : (

Mile High Report My Appolgies Mr. Orton.

I've been a defender of Mr. Orton here on MHR since he came to the Broncos. Many said he wasn't accurate enough. Others said he wasn't experienced enough. While others said he wasn't talented enough. I would defend him by pointing to his won/loss record or pointing out that every time he was given a chance, he won the starting QB competition. But there is something I said about him that he proved wrong and I must apologise.

Mile High Report Run defense: A closer look.

I've seen how people have complained about the run defense and I too, was concerned. So I took a closer look at the Pittsburgh game. I looked at each run for 3 things. 1 I looked if it was three yards or less. I did this because I consider that a win for the defense. A team con not run the ball straight down the field if they only get 3 yards on each carry,  2 Conversely, I looked at 4 yard or more because if a team can get that each time they run the ball then there is no need to pass. 3 I looked to see if a D'Back was making the tackle. (Not an Arizona D'Back that would be really bad run defense.) I think I read that in a 3-4 defense, if a runner gets past the front 7 then it is a long run or close to it. So if you want to learn the results of my findings take a jump.

Mile High Report MHR homepage problem

Ive been having a problem with the MHR homepage loading and I want to see if anyone else is experiencing problems or have a solution. When I load MRH homepage and have another program operating. The home page will freeze up my Internet connection. Even if I'm logged in and open the homepage, the same thing will happen. The only way I can get to the home page is by not having any other program open and not being logged in. This is the only sight I've ever had any problems with. Any help will be appreciated.

Mile High Report What's the worst or best that can happen offense?

I know things can always be worse and the inverse is also true things could always be better. With that in mind, I'm going to present a view as to what is the worse and best that can happen at each position group for the Broncos this year. Then I'll give my opinion as to what I think is going to happen.

Mile High Report What is that guy doing in Denver?

This has been the question the last couple of years from the so-called experts in MSM. They think in the past and present and can't understand the future. Why would a new coach come into a new position on a team and cut 20% of its players? Never mind that almost all of those players then wasn't hired by any other team. Why would a guy get rid of the heralded 2006 draft class? Never mind that none of them wanted to play for the team.

So to help out these uneducated experts I'd like to spell it out for them after the jump.

Mile High Report Drafting Quarterbacks

I've been doing research the last few days on the Quarterbacks of 2009 that threw for more than 1000 yards. I've found some interesting trends. The trend that I thought I'd use for this post is Quarterbacks that have a rating over 90 and when  and what round they were drafted.

Mile High Report What I don't like about mock drafts.

I always find it interesting what people think so I like looking at mock drafts. But sometimes I feel people pick players whom they like but not considering if they are an upgrade over the players they will replace. So after the jump I'm going to list the 50 non-ST players that I believe would be on the 53 man roster and I would like to see people make a mock draft showing the player they like and who that person would replace. Thank You

Mile High Report One of those things that make you go hmmmm.

Denver tenders Marshall only a 1st. Baltimore and Cincinnati says they are not interested but Seattle is. How many other teams are? I don't know maybe 3 or 4.

Seattle tenders Rob Sims 6-3 312  the #5 Guard on Walters list of FA guards an original tender which would be a 4th. Clearly worth more than a 4th. Several teams interested.

Does there look to be a trade with Seattle in the works?

Sims and #40 for Marshall?

What do you think?

Mile High Report Open Discussion on The CBA- Smart People Needed

We talk a lot about the ramifications of the CBA on the Broncos. But, what is that? Without a CBA the players will have to play 6 seasons before they become UFA. So what does that exactly mean for players like Marshall, Kuper, Scheffler, and I think even Orton. How many free agents does Denver truly have?  I'm not sure as far as compensation etc.  A smart poster would know this but I don't claim that. So I'd like to open this up for discussion for you smart people. There will also be 3 Tags that a team can put on a player in order to keep them. This seems as though the free agent pickings will be slim even with the playoff teams being limited with their ability to sign players. Kaptain Kirk wrote a series on the CBA which is good to reread but I'd like to know how this will effect Denver's ability to keep their own Free agents as well as to sign other teams free agents.

Mile High Report Not Making Playoffs- A Good Thing?

As I was taking my afternoon nap and thinking about the Broncos, I realized that not making the playoffs might be a good thing for the Broncos. How? In a non-cap year the playoff teams can only sign 1 free agent or even none at all unless they lose one. Denver needs to sign a QB that can backup Orton or even give him a run at starting. I know some of you will say BRANDSTATER. While I like Brandstater, I wouldn't think McD will go into next season as that being the plan. Most importantly Denver needs O-linemen. Isn't that what the draft is for? I think we have seen this year that McD doesn't play rookies unless they outright win the position battle. So Denver needs to sign a quality free agent center and guard and a decent backup tackle to challenge Polumbus. On defense the front seven have been adequate this year but a strong free agent signing here can go a long way also. The key is  to have a team that can be fielded without relying on unproven draftees. To do this Denver is going to have to sign more free agents than a playoff team is allowed. What do you think Denver will be better going to the playoffs and building on the positive environment that will create or missing playoff and using the year to continue to build this team?

Mile High Report Would Denver go to the playoffs at 10-6?

Denver has dominated every game in which the played a team with a weak offense therefore I'm assuming the trend continues and Denver defeats Oakland and Kansas City. But, what if they lose to Philadelphia what is their chances for making the playoffs?

Denver could still win the division if San Diego loses out. (Cincinnati, Tennessee, Washington) and New England and Philiadelphia's win/loss record is better than Miami and Dallas'. Highly unlikely.

So then it comes down to wild card. Teams now with 6 losses are Baltimore, Jacksonville, Miami, and the Jets.

Baltimore will win a tie breaker based on head to head.

Tennessee would win a tie breaker based on divisional games.

Miami would come down to the winning records of teams defeated. I'm guessing that will end in Denvers Favor.

The Jets losses the tie breaker to Denver based on Conference record.

So at 10-6 Denver needs a loss by Baltimore (Chicago, Pittsburgh, Oakland) and Jacksonville (Indianapolis, New England, Cleveland) and possibly Miami (Tennessee, Houston, Pittsburgh)

My guess Denver will get the #6 seed. Go Pittsburgh!

Mile High Report If San Diego and Denver Tie for the Division.

The first Tie break for a division tie is head-to-head and of course San Diego and Denver are tied after that.  The next tie breaker is record against division teams San Diego is 5-1 and Denver is 3-1 with Kansas City and Oakland left. So obviously if Denver loses to either one of those teams they lose the tie break. So this post is assuming Denver beats both Kansas City and Oakland.

If Denver wins all remaining games and finishes in a 12-4 tie with San Diego it will mean that San Diego lost 1 game. If that 1 loss is to Tennessee then San Diego wins the division based on a better record between common opponents San Diego10-2 Denver 9-3

If San Diego losses to Dallas or Washington then both teams would be tied vs common opponents and we would go to Conference record were both teams would be 9-3 which then would send things to the 5th tie breaker Strength of victories. In this case we would note which teams the other team has not beaten. Which would be New England, Indianapolis, and possibly Dallas for Denver and there records compared to Tennessee, Miami, and possibly Washington. Clearly Denver's opponent would have a better record and Denver would get the division.

Lets say that one loss of San Diego's was to Cincinnati then  Common Opponents would be tied. Denver would get the Division based on Conference record 9-3 to 8-4.

I was going to this for ties at 11-5 and 10-6 but that would have even more variables and I think you all would get bored with it. Besides I don't have the energy for that. At any rate I think everyone has enough of an idea to apply the tie breakers to the additional scenerios. I think Denver has an excellent chance to win a tie breaker if that what this division ends up in. What do you think?

Mile High Report More than a lucky score!

It was January 11, 1987 his team was down a touchdown and pinned at the 2 yard line. Someone entered the huddle and announced to his teammates, "we got them right were we want them."

How could he even think such a thing? Over the course of the year, he and his team had made plays that gave him confidence in himself and his teammates that they could drive the length of the field for a touchdown to tie the score. Leaving no time for the opposing team to be able to get the ball and score themselves. His teammates didn't argue with him, they felt his confidence and was assured they could do this. The result of course was The Drive.

Poll
After thinking about this and realizing the play could be catagorized as taking advantage of a players mistake since the bengal should have deflected the ball down, so the question is whether this play was a result of luck or Denver taking advantage of a

Mile High Report How is Denver at Wide Reciever?

Upon thinking about the events of the day I've come to ask this question, "How is Denver at Wide Receiver?" I do believe that we may have put to much emphasis on the Brandon Marshall being with the scout team defense and not knowing the playbook story after listening to McDaniel's after practice comments. But it brings to forefront a very real situation, that Denver may have to play the year without Brandon Marshall. Is Denver loaded enough at this position to be able to survive the loss of Brandon Marshall if it so happens?

Eddie Royal : To me he is more valuable than Marshall in this offense and therefore in my opinion ties Ryan Clady as most valuable offensive player.

Jabar Gaffney : Some say they are disappointed with Gaffney's performance in last Friday's game. My question is was the fact he was almost invisible by design? He is probably one of the guys McDaniel's is most familiar with and therefore needs to evaluate the least.

Brandon Lloyd : To me sounds impressive in what he can do. He was a starter, I believe, for Chicago last season. Which doesn't say much, but that he can start for some teams.

Brandon Stokley : Ideal slot receiver but is possibly 1 concussion away from the end of his career.

Kenny McKinley : Has shown himself to be a promising rookie.

Nate Swift : See McKinley.

Chad Jackson : Closest in size to Marshall.

There is Sheffler and Hillis that can play wide receiver if a situation calls for a big receiver. So what do you think, can Denver survive the loss of Marshall or do they need his size and play-making ability?

Mile High Report Is transition all bad?

Lately when prognosticators prognosticate on the Broncos "the team in transition" quote often comes up but is that always bad?

One of the issues for Denver is that the schemes both offensively and defensively are a drastic change from the failed previous regimes. So obviously the team will not be comfortable with these schemes this year as they will be in a year or two. The coaches may not be able to implement certain aspects of their schemes this year or should I say fully implement all aspects of their schemes.

But this change is not necessarily always bad. For example in the early games such as against Cleveland and Cincinnati, those teams are like the rest of us and are not fully sure what they are going to see. It will be difficult for them to fully scheme and attack the weaknesses of the offense and defense. Let alone the weaknesses of individual players. Then as the year goes on, teams will have more film and will maybe "figure out" Denver. So I expect to see some of these games where the other team just seems to have Denver's number. Kind of like Miami's new wrinkle the wildcat offense last year, it was very effective early in the year but by the time Denver played Miami, opposing teams were able to shut it down. Then the coaches will do their adjustments add new aspects to the scheme and again pose problems for their opponents.

So IMO being in a drastic transition is not always bad. But what are your opinions will the transition process be a hindrance or help to the 2009 Denver Broncos? Will this transition process cause wins or losses for the Broncos? As a football novice do I got this all wrong?

Mile High Report Should Denver select Jarmon in the supplemental Draft

The best available player in Thursdays Supplemental Draft is Jeremy Jarmon from Kentucky. He was rated as a 4-5 round pick. He is 6-3 279 and runs a 4.79 40. Thats all the facts that I have on him.

I wonder if anybody knows more and if he can play the 5 technique. McD has already shown if he likes somebody, he is not afraid to spend a future pick on them. So what are your opinions on this?
