His totals? In five games, 19 plate appearances, and 16 at-bats, he has 16 strikeouts (and three walks). He’s also stolen a base, been caught stealing once, and thrown someone out from center. We don’t know whether his strikeouts were looking or swinging, or whether he hit any foul balls, or whether the walks were a sign that he’s patient or a sign that GCL pitchers can’t throw strikes. What we do know is that he hasn’t yet put a ball in play. "I know it’s a game of failure and it is a hard game to adjust to," Green-Thompson said on the day he was drafted. He knows that even better now.

His name is Shaq. He profiles like Deion. And he is close to being a Red Sox. According to a major league source, the Red Sox are close to finalizing an agreement with 18th-round draft pick Shaq Thompson, an outfielder out of Grant High School in California. Within days, he is expected to join the Red Sox to begin his pro baseball career. However, Thompson is better known as one on the most celebrated football recruits in the country. Later this summer, he will start his football career as a defensive back at the University of Washington, a school that Thompson decided to attend after initially committing to Cal. The reason for Thompson’s decision to attend Washington was of particular interest to the Red Sox: The UW Athletics Department said that it was fine having Thompson play football while also pursuing a professional baseball career. And so, the Red Sox were comfortable drafting him with the knowledge that, by signing him, they’ll get the chance to work with Thompson outside of the football season, with the hope that he can develop despite playing on a compressed baseball schedule.

An important member of the California softball team was absent when the Golden Bears faced Washington for a berth in the College World Series last weekend in Berkeley. Barbara Wiggs, better known as Bebe to her friends—which is to say, to everyone who's ever met her—had a previous engagement at Disneyland, but her teammates didn't hold it against her. Bebe is only five years old, and besides, the Bears feel that she's with them even when she's not. Last Friday, the day before the opener of the best-of-three series, Bebe was on the phone with assistant coach Tammy Lohmann, giving her a pep talk to pass on to the players. She wanted them to stay strong and be sure not to get discouraged even if something somehow went wrong (which wasn't likely, considering that Cal, the top-ranked team in the nation, entered the series with a 54--5 record). The Bears took the words of their honorary teammate seriously because Bebe has a 50-year-old's wisdom in her five-year-old soul. "When she talks about strength and about not giving up, it carries more meaning," says pitcher Jolene Henderson. "If there's anyone who knows what it takes to keep fighting, it's her."
