When practice ended and most of the players had left the field, Manfro stood in the end zone shagging machine-simulated kicks and punts. Over and over again he caught balls while almost all of his teammates were catching streams of water from hot showers. When he finally had enough, he jogged over to me and apologized for being sweaty. He was smiling, of course, and happy to talk with a reporter. When we were finished, it struck me how incredulous it is that this football player got overlooked by 118 schools. But that was then.

One tough Lady Bruin! Knowing another surgery would mean the end of her playing career, Camuso decided to postpone surgery so that she could finish out her final year of eligibility on the team, regardless of the pain she would suffer and the countless trips to the trainer’s room she knew she’d have to make. Prince hampered by injury in final stretch of QB race "His shoulder is a little bit dinged up, but he’s fine," Mazzone said. "That’s why I backed off on him a little bit." The sore shoulder has clearly hampered his performance. Over the last week, Prince appears to have fallen behind in the quarterback competition because of a series of bad throws and interceptions. He has lost velocity and accuracy on his throws and has been throwing with an awkward shotput type of motion. "You learn something everyday." Based on today’s performances, QB Brett Hundley’s was easily the best of the three left in the stable. While working against the first defense, the QB-RB tandem of Hundley and Jones punched out three strong runs consecutively. The last of the three ended with Jones carrying three defenders, bruising his way forward for a couple extra yards. - UCLA Football: "Way to Work"

Mora concedes that it would just be easier to hand the job to Hundley and let him grow into the gig. But that would be "cheating" the rest of the players who are in their last year. He's taking a more tactical, Walshian approach. "Walsh never looked at a player and saw what he could do right now," Mora said. "He considered what a guy would look like in three games, seven games, a year, two years. "That's how we have to look at it, at trajectory. If player A has the same trajectory all year long, but player B can meet that trajectory after three games, than exceed it, you have to go with that player." UCLA Bruins - Pac-12 Blog - ESPN

Kendricks did not participate in team drills for the remainder of practice despite trying to get in the action several times. The linebackers and offensive linemen were running sprints after practice, further enforcing Mora's disciplinary philosophy that if one member of a unit makes a mistake, the entire unit has to pay. "That’s how it should be," Kendricks said. "There has to be a point where we can’t do that any longer. We’ve got to get to business so that’s all he was trying to get through."

"He wants to be great, and that's a great starting point for me," Yarber said. "He's a very good player and at a young age, he's showing a lot of maturity. He can be one of the better receivers to come out of UCLA, but right now is just the beginning, and he knows it."

*** It's no secret that the defensive line will be UCLA's strength this season. Wesley Flowers is a beast out there and Datone Jones is like a classic muscle car that hauls on diesel. "We have outstanding depth," Mora said. "And that's without (five-star signee) Ellis (McCarthy). We have about eight guys that are legitimate players at this level. A couple legitimate at the next level. I think we'll have a nice rotation at end and nose tackle, be able to keep guys fresh. To me right now it's probablly the strenght of our football team." Mora said a big credit goes to D-line coach Angus McClure.

Rios, as the other defensive highlight of camp so far, has been showing a mental aptitude not particularly common amongst true, early-entry freshmen. Lining up with the first team defense, Rios stepped into press coverage with purpose behind it; Anticipating a swing to the RB, Rios took the space away from the offensive player and tackled him for what would have been a five-yard loss.

Years ago, while Mora coached the Atlanta Falcons, former player Warrick Dunn told Mora that he should coach college football. The NFL, Dunn said, was no place for a man of his ideals. During those months on the Washington campus, he reflected on Dunn’s comment. He would have long, detailed conversations about student life, about the uphill climb of finding who you are and what it all means — a lost and overlooked reality of college kids living on their own for the first time. "I was inspired by how they dealt with the problems they had; how they handled the struggles and demands of college life," Mora said. "That just kind of sucked me in. I knew right then I wanted to be with this age group."

Mora says he's not leaning one way or the other when it comes to Hilliard playing on both sides of the ball. "I'm still thinking about it," Mora said. "If he can help us both ways then we'll use him on both sides of the ball. If we think he's only a running back, we'll (keep) him at running back. If he looks like maybe we need to move him back to safety, then we'll move him back to safety. Right now he's doing a good job where he is."

Defensive Strength: By all accounts, this defensive line has a chance to be one of the best in the conference. The collective star-rankings of names like Cassius Marsh, Owamagbe Odigizuwa, Brandon Willis and Datone Jones as recruits looks real pretty on paper. The depth and talent of this group is too much not to be the strength of this unit.

Practice opened with a bang, as Mora put the team through the Oklahoma Drill once again. The highlight of this drill was when OL ALexandru Ceachir put Datone Jones flat on his back. Coach Mora is not tolerating one second of BS. He is expecting everyone to be accountable, even the coaches, and he will not settle for anything less than excellence. RB’s: -Dalton Hilliard: Outside speed is unmatched; Hilliard hits the corner and turns up-field with ease. While not necessarily a "down-hill" runner, his style and speed are giving him quite a few looks as a starter. With RB Johnathan Franklin being out with a minor injury today, Hilliard sure took advantage. -Steven Manfro: This guy turns on a dime—Has a Barry Sanders-esque side-step technique that is incredibly hard to defend. Also continues to bounce off tacklers; His legs are always moving whenever facing contact. ST’s: -Jeff Locke: I made a point of timing his punts the past few days. Locke has been averaging a 4.5-4.9 second punt, often inducing "oooh’s" and "aaaah’s" with the height of his kicks. While winning with his punts may not be an option, Mora’s got quite a leg at his disposal when it comes to a field-position sort of game. UCLA Football: Back to the Basics

"Damien is to me what we want this entire program to look like," UCLA linebackers and special teams coach Jeff Ulbrich said. "Without a doubt. He knows one way, and every single guy on this team knows he knows one way, and that's full speed. How physical he is, his effort, his attitude, the way he prepares is unbelievable. For a guy who has never played linebacker, he knows every run fit now, every pass drop." Inside UCLA with Jon Gold

Two yards from the sideline, amidst a sun-drenched morning at Spaulding Field, RT Brett Downey slowed down his pace as the next offensive line unit hopped in for the subsequent drill. Suddenly, Coach Mora, with veins bursting from his forehead, abruptly stopped the play. Stepping out from behind the defense, Mora belted out at Downey in a hoarse scream: "Run your ass off the field or run out there!" Mora pointed to the exit of Spaulding.

Between the three quarterbacks vying for the starter role, Prince might have shown the best performance of the day. Prince hit Fauria and Shaq Evans in stride on a couple plays—definitely better in timing and shoulder placement than on Tuesday. Hundley showed improvement in the medium to longer passes, with two exceptionally zipped spirals into a slant by Jerry Rice Jr. and post pattern by Jordan James, respectively. Richard Brehaut, however, looks like the most well-rounded QB. Not the best spirals, nor necessarily the most accurate but today he seemed to hit the most receivers with catch-able balls.

Mora's approach says volumes about where his head is going into 2012; he has to find out what he has on this roster and separate the wheat from the chaff. Talking about being exciting on offense is one thing; letting folks know you want to see who gets up after they get punched in the face is another. If Mora truly carries this attitude with him through the spring, then Bruins fans should definitely get excited for the improvements to come.

Change? Prove it. While it was clear this was the first team practice, there was certainly a level of focus unlike any seen in the recent past. Clearly, this coaching staff is attempting to prepare the team with tangible exercises—ones meant to replicate actual game-play with the purpose to translate onto Saturdays. Already, the new tone is evident: This is physical football. While no pads were on today, players were flying around and hitting—a couple of skirmishes further showed this is not the same regime from 12 months ago. Mora, who brought this NFL style when he took over for Rick Neuheisel in December, said it still wasn't good enough. "We’ve got a million miles to go to be the football team that will become, we need to become and desire to become," said Mora, who returned to the practice field after a coaching break of more than two years.
