Arrowhead Pride AFC West Pre-Cuts Power Rankings

I have been met with a lot of justified hate with my constant prediction that Denver does in fact have the best team in the division, and will win the division this year. So to that end I figured I would go ahead and rank unit by unit each team in the AFC West as they stand today. After doing this it might be the Chargers that should be the team to watch out for.

What's most exciting about this offseason

is that most of the guys we end up cutting will actually be in the NFL afterward. Haven't been able to say that in, well as long as I've been a Chiefs fan

Who are we going to Smithgordon this year?

Smithgordon- to take a veteran journeyman player (preferably above the age of 28) that everyone has forgotten about and turn him into a solid contributor on the defensive line. synonyms include "Crenelling" and "Shamon"

So Sammie Lee Hill is out there on a RFA tender

Got me to thinking, Detroit is cash strapped and hardly in need of a NT. That with the fact that we don't particularly need our draft picks anymore, AND that Hill performed well under Crennel at the Shrine game coming out of college. Think we could make an offer sheet? Walterfootball says he hasn't been tendered but some chat boards have him as a 4th. Well worth it IMO (although it's probably not true

Did some digging on RT contracts

The highest paid RT in Jason Smith who is paid over $10 million a year. You could make the argument that he was drafted to play LT and is grossly over payed for what he does. Besides he may be getting cut soon so his contract may be out of the discussion. In a situation where they disregard Smith's ridiculous contract the next highest paid RT would be David Stewart of the Titans who gets a little over $6 million a year. Which sounds a little more reasonable. I'm 50% sure I'm wrong with this info as I found it by scrolling a list of starting RT and contracts on Rotoworld. Probably missed something here

Arrowhead Pride Fantasy Football Open thread

I actually thought this was a good idea last time I saw it so I wanted to re-instate it. I've actually experienced a pretty nice turn around reading some of your guys' advice (except for whoever told me to start the Chiefs Defense Colts week). Here's some questions I have for you AP

  • I picked up DeMarco Murray like a boss and started him, I kind of want to trade him for a kings ransom, I have a feeling his hot performance was a result of playing the Rams more than actually being that good.
  • Is Kellen Winslow Jr. worth keeping? I have Owen Daniels who has been pretty legit for me.
  • I currently have Ryan Fitzpatrick, Eli Manning, and Michael Vick on my squad, I only want to keep two and package the other with Murray for a better QB or WR/DEF combo. What do you guys think?

I'm hoping we can use this thread as a go to post for Fantasy Football advice, news, etc, etc..

Is it just me

Or does it seem like all of the free agents we brought in were to beat the Raiders? Breaston, McClain, and Gregg each showed up in a big way yesterday

A trade that would make Al Davis proud- picking up a former first rounder for cheap. If this trade materializes Oakland may be without a pick until the sixth round after their first round selection.

Are the Chiefs the 2008 Dolphins?

Really think about it. Huge drastic improvement on an easy schedule based on a killer run game and a marginal QB playing above his talent level. A few defensive players show up like rockstars and solidify the defense. Everyone was on Sparrano's balls about being the coach of the year. They added some nice pieces to their team in the off season (Gibril Wilson, Jake Grove, Jason Taylor) then BOOM! They finish below .800 and get exposed for what they are. A terribly coached and QBed team that has a lot more rebuilding to do. Thoughts?

For those of you who were bagging on Phil Taylor the other day

Check NFLN and watch him decimate Danny Watkins all game long. There was one play where he literally pimp slapped him and Watkins flew

Arrowhead Pride Just My Observations From the Game

[From the fanposts. Really nice observations from 808NaNz808! -Matt]

Sorry Blind Tiger I realize you have a post exactly like this below mine now I guess, I started to write this out as a comment on that post but it started getting long so I put it here. Anyway, I sat up late last night after work and watched the game on NFL Preseason live, pretty good deal. Just some things I remember noticing in no particular order.

- Powe looked pretty good for it being his first game. But Toribio looked better, it's his third year in the league so if he is going to break out, now would be the proper time to do so

- Bailey was getting man handled on one on one.

- Gales should have been cut on the field. For someone as big as he is, he was in the secondary almost the whole night getting drilled by second string linemen.

Honest Question

Don't the Colts play a zone coverage defense? Why the hell is Al Davis so interested in Kelvin Hayden if he doesn't fit their scheme? Raider fans are happy as hell that every team he's visited has passed on him

"The Broncos really need help at defensive tackle, and Ty Warren was the best free agent available at the position. Warren is coming off hip surgery, but Denver isn't risking much here. If Warren doesn't pan out, it won't really matter all that much. "

5 Million is too much for Steve Breaston (Millen on shrooms t be exact) but it's a "B" grade to sign Ty Warren who is much more of an injury risk and doesn't fit the scheme, to the same kind of money... haterade? methinks maboi

Barry Cofield to the Skins per Adam Schefter. Some guys were talking about him as a possibility, if anything it thins out the NT buyers market

I don't know if it's been said. NFLN reporting Derrick Mason and Kelly Gregg were told by the Ravens they would be cut

Arrowhead Pride Connected: Baltimore Ravens

From the FanPosts. -Chris

(I started this post months ago and never finished because the CBA got me down on the idea, however, with free agency seemingly around the corner I thought it would be a good idea to start it up again.)

If you sat Todd Haley in a room and asked him to describe what his ideal team looks like, the image you get might not be to the likeness of the Patriots, rather the Baltimore Ravens. Sure the Ravens are in sort of a decline, and that's never what a franchise aspires to. But on their best days, you can see what Todd Haley's vision is for his squad.

We all witnessed it week one of the playoffs, what Ozzie Newsome and his gang had built in Baltimore. A rough meat and potatoes offense complimented by a versatile, punch you in the mouth defense.

Roaming the sidelines of that game? Our very own Jim Zorn, then quarterbacks coach for the Ravens. However, what  goes unnoticed is that the Chiefs have an even stronger connection to the Ravens franchise than a Quarterback coach who posted just a year of service in Baltimore.

We have Ozzie Newsome. Possibly one of the most accomplished football men ever and respected colleague of one Scott Pioli who worked closely with Newsome when the Ravens franchise was still in Cleveland.

Arrowhead Pride Chiefs 2011 Season Preview

So I know what you're all thinking, Scott Pioli is easily the best general manager in football. I mean... look at his last couple drafts, they were outstanding!! And look at all teh value he got out of it! I mean... We could easily have the rookie of the year in both defense and offense in Jonathan Baldwin and Justin Houston, their in really good situation with the Chiefs and should be given every opportunity to succeed with all the talent that is surrounding them currently with the Chiefs.

Thomas Hali, Shaun "nutcracker" Smith, Wallace Gillberry, Glenn Dorsey, DJ, Berry, Carr, Flowers, Lewis, Arenas, Powe, and maybe Tyson Jackson if he saves himself from being a bust this year should be Pro Bowlers, and with so much attention going to them it's going to be hard to pay attention to Justin Houston, who should win defensive rookie of the year because teams won't be paying to much attention to him because of all the talent around him...

:) Okay now.

Then you have "Baldwinning" who, now that a quality quarterback is throwing to him in Matt Cassel (or Ricky Stanzi) he should now have better production than he did in "teh PITT." Also, with Charles, Bowe, Moeaki, Pope, Cassel, Albert, Waters, Lilja, and maybe Richardson probably going to the Pro Bowl teams will not have a good enough defense to watch the former PITT standout. Especially if Dexter McCluster as he gets more adapted to the game of the NFL will be playing at a higher level and should take heat off of the future "rookie of the year." These should all help us get to the next level and finally beat teh Colts in playoffs (oops did I just type that!?)

Now.

Hop over teh jump to see what I think will be the result of the NFL season for our beloved Chiefs.

Arrowhead Pride Looking back on the 2009 NFL draft

Round 1. Tyson Jackson, DE

Tysonjackson13_medium

via www.kcchiefsblog.com

Unless Jerell Powe plays like one of the best throughout his entire career, this pick will forever be the pick that was not B.J Rajii. Tyson Jackson may not be coming along as quickly as we had all hoped, but realistically he was expected to be a slow horse out of the gate on draft day. It seems the "experts" billing him as a mid round pick were a tad generous when looking at the situation now.

Jackson shows flashes of brilliance, though I'm afraid flashes may be all we see from him. Also, it doesn't help that a defensive line guru like Romeo Crennel benched Jackson in favor of Shaun Smith mid season, given Jackson had just come off a groin injury, but two consecutive healthy scratches can't be a good thing. It's been a well documented point in the Todd Haley era that "nobody loses their job to injury" is it safe to say Tyson lost his because of his play?

All things aside I'm willing to give Jackson another year, he showed enough ability to deserve as much. Luckily for the Chiefs their in a favorable situation with Jackson. Shaun Smith came in and was above average playing in Jackson's spot, so if Tyson solidifies himself as a bust, the Chiefs shouldn't lose too much steam, if he breaks out, the Chiefs get better.

Arrowhead Pride Could Baldwin be "That Guy?"

NFL Network starts to go crazy wondering what the heck just happened. "Is thre a trade?...It seems the Ravens have passed on their.." and before they could even finish the sentence red blared across the screen declaring the Chiefs had made a pick. We all know the "WTF" moment that followed that. The Chiefs chose one Jonathan "I hate my QB" Baldwin.  With all the questions that arose at that moment both by draft analyst and fans, there is one more prevalent and important now than on draft day. Do the Chiefs finally have "that guy"

Last season the greatest struggle the Chiefs had was finding "that guy" across of Dwayne Bowe. They could prod the opponent with Bowe but once the Chiefs' opponents shut down Bowe they were able to stack the box and focus on the guts of the offense; Jamaal Charles and the #1 rushing attack. The hope in every Chiefs fans heart is that Baldwin will be "that guy" that finally helps to even out the offense.

What I want to do, two games at a time, is see what kind of impact Baldwin could have in the upcoming season, by looking at the 2010 season. All of the monikers given to players (such as possession, "#2", and speed) are of my own opinion and all stats are from last season

Arrowhead Pride Building a Beast: The Ultimate Mock off season

Sometimes I wonder why people like me don't wind up as NFL GM's, I write stuff like this all the time and ALL the players I say the Chiefs should pick end up being really good on other teams, except for the ones that don't. If I were the GM I would shout right into Clark Hunts face; "The Chiefs can easily fill all of their positions of need with one draft and a solid go in free agency, don't believe me? Well, let's first look at our needs!!!!!!!"

LT: Obviously Branden Albert is not the solution here, he's terrible and needs to be moved to RT, where he can dethrone Ryan O'Callaghan who didn't play well as a starter last year.

QB: Let's face it Matt Cassel sucks and we need to cut him before we swallow his huge contract this year for another year of inferiority.

FB: Mike Cox sucks too, and Tim Castille is a TE playing FB.

WR: Dwayne Bowe is ok, but we need someone to start across of him or were going to suck at running the ball.

RB: Ok Thomas Jones was only the 20th RB in the NFL last year and we obviously need someone who is top 10 to compliment the #2 RB in the NFL, so I'm going to assume we cut him

NT: This is an obvious one, Ron Edwards sucked all year last year and Shaun Smith was too afraid to play NT so he played DE instead.

C: Casey Weigmann also sucks, he's old and much too effective and reliable to exist in our system for even one more year.

LOLB: Mike Vrabel talked bad about the NFL, and Andy Studebaker sucks big time, he's a ST only player.

ILB: Derrick Johnson is playing out of position but he's ok for now, we need to focus on getting Jovan Belcher off the field. He's a DE playing ILB!!!! That doesn't even make sense!! We need to replace him no matter what, he sucked last year and he's an UdFA on the Chiefs therefore can never amount to anything.

FS: Jon McGraw started all year last year and we have nothing to replace him. We need to draft a FS or the deep field will be wide open.

okay (since I know this will be front paged) click over the jump to see the rest of my plan

Arrowhead Pride Could a Current Chief be a Diamond in the Rough?

Evaluating a player is a lot like Poker. It's almost entirely luck, yet somehow the same people seem to be sitting on the championship table year after year. In the NFL's case, the high rollers would be people like the Rooneys, Bill Bellichik, Bill Polian, A.J Smith, and Ozzie Newsome.

The Steelers currently start 7 players that were drafted in the fifth round or later, 10 if you add in third rounders and Flozell Adams, who was signed cheap by Pittsburgh. The Colts? TWELVE players started that were drafted lower than the fifth. Six of them went undrafted.

The best franchises are built on late picks and cheap free agents just as much as they are on successful early picks. It's all about value in the NFL, and it doesn't get much better than having a cheap free agent, late round rookie, or undrafted rookie, turn into a starter for a playoff push.

That said, is it possible that the Chiefs have a high value player already on the roster? As it stands the Chiefs start a bunch of guys that could fall under the "good value" category but how many of them are actually good value at this point?

Brandon Flowers- $555K
Eric Berry- $3.25M
Kendrick Lewis- $405K
Javier Arenas- $405K
Brandon Carr (with the highest RFA tender)- $2.79M
= $7.405

Stanford Routt~ $10M

Paying for your entire secondary (for 2011) with less money than your rival paid to their #2 CB.... Priceless
