Twinkie Town Report: Gardy Stepping Down as Manager!

In a stunning move, Ron Gardenhire has announced that he will be resigning as manager as the Minnesota Twins. When asked why, it is to follow another ambition of his.

"While I love baseball, choir has always been a passion of mine," Gardy said. "Thanks to all my years of managing I now have enough capital to start my own men's choir."

Bill Smith at the press conference said, "We wish Gardy luck in his new musical career. While we are surprised by this announcement we are fully prepared and have found and hired Gardy's replacement. The next manager of the Minnesota Twins..."

KING LEONIDAS!

At the press conference King Leonidas delivered this rousing message to the press.

" Emperor Selig plans to send his 29 armies out to destroy us. WE WILL NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! WE ARE HISTORY'S GREATEST WARRIORS! WE SHALL OVERCOME THOSE 29 ARMIES AND TAKE WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURS FROM EMPEROR SELIG!

One reporter blurted out that this was madness. Leonidas" response: "THIS ISN'T MADNESS THIS IS TWINS TERRITORY." Leonidas then proceeded to kick the offending reporter into the newly constructed pit of death.

Reactions from the players are best described as mixed.

Jim Thome was quoted: BIG JIM WILL KEEP MASHING TATERS FOR THE KINGED SPARTAN MANAGER.

Nick Punto, on the other hand immediately opted out of his contract so he could join Gardy's choir. He was immediately named starting tenor.

Jason Kubel was quoted: Dude has some serious beardage.

Reactions from the media have also been mixed.

Buster Olney of ESPN: "A new manager huh? While that does sound interesting we are not allowed to report on it because it does not involve the Yankees or Red Sox. Sorry."

Jim Souhan: "If the Twins have a losing season, then this will be a bad move, but if the Twins have a winning season, then this will be a good move."

This is a parody of Casey at Bat about legendary Twin Kent Hrbek. I read this many years ago and thought it was hilarious.

This one comes courtesy of Sky Andrecheck of Sports Illustrated.com It is similar to the one posted earlier on espn but this one is free to read and also discusses Joe Nathan's place among HOF closers.

Twinkie Town Glen Perkins Trade Idea

So far this offseason, pretty much every Twins fan has called for trading Glen Perkins. However the only trade scenario mentioned was a trade to the Padres for Kouzmanoff. Since that did not happen, how about another idea? Why not trade Glen Perkins to the Dodgers? It would be a good fit since the Dodgers need young, inexpensive pitching, while Perkins would get to pitch at Dodger Stadium, a known pitchers park. The only question is what would the Twins get in return. Here are some of my suggestions, based on two criteria.

1. They have fill a need for the Twins or be able to fit in the Twins system.

2. It has to be a player the Dodgers would be willing to give up. The Dodgers are most likely going to start relying on younger players within the system since their payroll will be greatly reduced.

With that in mind, here are the two players I feel the Twins could get for Perkins.

1. SS Joe Becker.

The Twins could get him because he is stuck between two other SS prospects. The main purpose for getting him would be to give us some MI talent in the upper levels of the system, while holding the spot down for future MI prospects down the road.

2. RHP Timothy Sexton

This guy would be a very good fit for the Twins. He has very good control (100 K: 34 BB in 157 IP) and he projects to be a groundball pitcher as he has a 1.75 GO/AO. He would probably be a good #4 starter, much like Nick Blackburn.

I know many will think I am not asking for a lot but you have to remember that Perkins has a history of shoulder problems, which will scare suitors off. At this point, any value that Perkins has is based on his potential and his affordability over the next few years.
