Bill Simmons' comment about difference between NBA and NFL.

"We ARE a league of Haves and Have-Nots. Look at every great season we've ever had — when we're top-heavy and bottom-heavy, that's when we have the best teams and the best playoff games. Here's...

McMillan hired Ociepka in part because he reminded him of an assistant coach during his playing days in Seattle, Bob Kloppenburg. "In our interview, I just liked Bob’s intensity," McMillan says. "He was a guy who paid attention and wanted to work at the defensive end of the floor, and what I was running, he was running, it seemed." Ociepka downplays his role with the Blazer defense. "Nate knows what he wants," he says. "I can have input; the rest of the staff can have input. That’s why I say this is my favorite stop. It’s our defense, not my defense."

Gackle: Catching Up With J.R. Rider

10

Kudos to East Bay Express writer Paul Gackle, who wrote the in-depth "Fallen Rider" feature about former Portland Trail Blazers guard J.R. Rider. ed: bumped to front page

Cleveland wants #2 pick.

19

According to ESPN.com, Cleveland would acquire the #2 pick from Minnesota -- as well as absorb Richard "Rip" Hamilton's contract from Detroit using its trade exception from the LBJ trade last summer -- while the T'wolves would get the #4 pick from the Cavaliers and the #8 pick from the Pistons. As it is, the Cavs want to draft both Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams.

It's not off-court chemistry, but rather on-court cohesion that matters.

"While there was speculation that removing Perkins hindered the team's chemistry," wrote Greg Payne, "Rivers suggested it was the on-the-court familiarity that hurt the Celtics the most." Here's Rivers' quote from that article: "Well, it was more not that the trust went away, the know-how went away, the continuity went away [...]"

Portland desperately needs a backup point guard, pronto!

I'm not talking about later down the line -- even though that's a matter of concern for another time and place -- but rather the here and now. Yet, since the month of April is nearly upon us,...

A wretched Nate McMillan quote from 1993.

10

"We missed it," McMillan says of the pressure defense. "We thought we wanted to just play halfcourt defense, but we found out it wasn't us. Kloppy brought us back to the way we need to play. I've been doing it so long, I don't feel comfortable playing any other way." As a guy who detests the switch-heavy SOS pressure defense, that quote makes me sick to my stomach.

Slow-paced teams > fast-paced teams @ defensive efficiency & defensive rebounding.

Let’s show some examples, okay. So far this season, Boston is 1st in defensive rating (99.4 points allowed per 100 possessions), 5th in defensive rebounding (76.4% DRB%), and tied for 19th in pace...
