Dallas signs Drew Gooden to a one-year, $4.5 million deal, with incentives that can total it over $5 million.

10

I don't like this one bit for the Mavericks, as Drew Gooden isn't a defensive-minded center that the team needs to platoon with Erick Dampier at the pivot. I feel bad for Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson, who lost out on their first target in Marcin Gortat and had to settle with the less than impressive Gooden.

Mark Warkentien makes another shrewd move.

18

Warkentien, who's unquestionably one of the most intelligent front office executives in the NBA, dumps a couple of crappy second-year players (i.e., Walter Sharpe & Sonny Weems) for a decent backup or third-string power forward in Malik Allen. The Milwaukee Bucks complete this move due to Weems only being guaranteed $174,284 of his salary next season if he's waived by 8/15/2009. Knowing Scott Skiles, I expect that Weems will be waived and Sharpe will be released sometime this summer.

7/15/2009 JD: Who's your favorite NBA player -- past or present -- who never played for the Trail Blazers?

For me, this is an extraordinarily tough question. It gets even more difficult due to my inability to include any former Seattle SuperSonics, as I grew up a fan of the green and gold -- as well as...

With the 17th pick in the 1987 NBA Draft, the Portland Trail Blazers selected Ronnie Murphy -- who ended up being a total bust -- as a result, the crowd in New York was electrified, since St. John's legend Mark Jackson fell into the Knicks lap.

Portland has the rights to and cap holds on these four guys.

In this recent Most Valuable Puppets commercial, the overt message is LeBron James' pending free agency in 2010. The underlying message, however, concerns that eastern bluebird in the background, which symbolically flies away to New York at the end.

Mike Dunleavy, Sr. may consider playing Blake Griffin at small forward.

19

As far as I'm concerned, Blake Griffin will be an abject failure on both ends of the court if he's forced to play the weakside corner. It'll be similar to how Marcus Fizer did miserably with the Chicago Bulls earlier this decade.

Okay, it's time to talk about Channing Frye.

By extending the one-year qualifying offer to Frye, it’s possible that he’ll just sign the thing and cost the Portland Trail Blazers $4,264,761 next season. In addition, if Frye is extended the...

Here's an open thread for today's NBA games.

The Boston Celtics @ Chicago Bulls game is getting testy right now, with the crowd chanting "bull****" -- which forced ABC to censor the auido for a moment -- after Brad Miller and Glen "Big Baby"...

Rumor has it that Ricky Rubio wants to play for the New York Knicks.

20

If the New York Knicks don't win the lottery and get stuck with the 8th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, I could see Rubio forcing some team's hand into shipping his draft rights off to the Big Apple. For example, a theoretical trade of Jared Jeffries, Wilson Chandler, the 8th pick (e.g., Brandon Jennings), and $3,000,000 in cash considerations to the Sacramento Kings for Kenny Thomas and the 1st pick (e.g., Rubio) would benefit both teams. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=cy8lm3 The Knicks would snag Rubio, while the Kings would solidify both its long-term small forward and point guard needs -- with Chandler and Jennings, respectively -- in one fell swoop. Heck, the thought of Rubio running wild in Mike D'Antoni's fast-paced, run-'n'-gun offensive system would be a sight to behold each and every game.

Right now, many Lakers' fans feels like Leonard "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence.

Reportedly, Shaquille O'Neal wants to play for the Dallas Mavericks.

5

A trade wherein Shaquille O'Neal is traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Dallas Mavericks for Erick Dampier, Jerry Stackhouse, and $3,000,000 in cash considerations would make sense for both ballclubs. Stackhouse, who's salary is partially guaranteed for just $2,000,000 next season, would be waived by the Suns, while Dampier would give the team a much-needed defensive presence down in the paint. For the Mavericks, Mark Cuban would probably go ga-ga over the marketing machine that is O'Neal. O'Neal could also continue his merry-go-round tour of trying to win one more ring, which'd fit in perfectly with the Mavericks dwindling hopes of bringing home the hardware to Dallas.

"I've made the comment that I may not get there with you,'' he [Nate McMillan] said of his players. "Meaning I'm going to have to push you and coach you and develop you, and you're going to have to grow, but I know that players come before coaches. And my time may run out before you are really ready to win, and maybe the next guy who gets you is going to get a hell of a crew. But they'll be ready to take that next step.''
