Many of us, myself included, were guilty of bashing fans who posted that the Steelers were doomed to fail this year.

They were criticized for being critical of the lack of turnovers. They were right.

They were complained about for complaining about the underachieving offense. They were right.

They were questioned for questioning the lack of leadership and drive of the team in general. They were right.

Unfortunately, the time has come for me to make amends for directing my anguish and criticism toward the individuals posting their opinions, rather than placing it where it belonged: squarely on the shoulders of the players responsible for inspiring those posts in the first place.

Throughout the year, I always found a reason to believe that the Steelers would still be playing football in February. I wouldn't even entertain the blasphemy that we would miss out on January as well. Here's a look back at some of my personal shortcomings in judging the potential of certain individuals, and therefore the team, to succeed, whether it was through downplaying the severity of a shortcoming, underestimating that shortcoming's impact on the team, or overestimating the rest of the team's ability to succeed. Most of these misperceptions resulted in an attitude that I and others displayed when others correctly identified them and called players out.

Without further delay, here are some of my Forgettable Football Fallacies for 2012:

Ben Roethlisberger is good enough to carry the team, no matter what

Whoops. I understand that he was hurt. I get that. I also understand that the offensive line was, at best, inconsistent once the injury monster bit Willy Colon for the third straight year. However, neither of those things came into play when Ben was errantly firing passes late in games that cost us at least a chance of winning. I'm specifically looking at week 1, week 15, and week 16. Doubters that called out Ben for making poor decisions at critical moments were right. I still think that he's an excellent quarterback, but he needs to realize that maybe, just maybe, he was very lucky at the end of Super Bowl 43 and that he doesn't always have the talent to force the ball in crucial situations.

Our stable of running backs is a strength of the team, even with the occasional bad game

After week 3's Eagles game, I was convinced that Mendenhall would be getting a big, juicy contract this year. The biggest problem I saw was of an embarrassment of riches. How would we manage to get all of the studs in our backfield enough touches to take full advantage of each of their strengths? What is the optimal running back mix to ensure that we're getting the maximum horsepower out of our stable? As the year dragged on and people complained about the backfield, they were proven right as the offensive philosophy switched from optimizing their strengths to mitigating their weaknesses.

The Young Money trio is the best group of receivers in the league

Sure, Mike Wallace held out, but don't his numbers justify a bigger contract? Yeah, we paid AB a lot of money in that new contract, but he earned it, right? And Manny is going to have a huge year after being hurt most of last season. Anyone who doesn't agree is just looking to stir the pot. The receivers will be fine.

Huge drops in critical moments, bigger fumbles in bigger moments. Counterfeit money? You bet.

The #1 ranked defense in the NFL doesn't need turnovers to be dominant

This might be my biggest mistake of the year. The YPG allowed stat is a lot like GDP and unemployment numbers; It's a made up statistic that has no bearing on reality. Sure, the fancy statistics might make you feel better, but it just doesn't pass the smell test when you're giving up big third down plays, failing to generate pressure at crucial moments, and not getting turnovers when you need them. A few certain games excepted, this is something that needs to be fixed. Maybe they can start working out with Cortez. That's my only suggestion.

We don't have a leadership problem, especially not with Tomlin

Hines Ward didn't lead the team in receptions. James Farrior didn't lead the team in tackles. What became apparent, however, is that both led their sides of the ball in leadership. At this point, I really don't care if Ben hates Todd Haley. I don't care if Ben loves Todd Haley. You don't say another word to the media about it, period. Insubordination is unacceptable. Criticizing a coach or his play calling to make yourself look like you're a big enough man to say it, or that you're too important to get in trouble for it doesn't make you look like an alpha male or a leader, it is an unnecessary distraction and it makes you look like a douche. Mendenhall - you're the longest tenured back on the team. Show up for work. Tomlin - I'm not suggesting that we replace him or anything insane like that. I think he's a top 5 coach of the league, even to go .500 with the kind of injuries we had this year. That being said, you need to get your players mindset right. Whatever juice he served up for the second Ravens game needs to be bottled and stored. If next year's team motto isn't "tough team" then something went wrong.

Again, my apologies for tinting my glasses a shade too dark of black and gold this year and calling others out for not drinking the kool aid. Please feel free to let me know where I went wrong in the comments. God knows I haven't been shy about it for others.

As a Steelers fan living in the heart of Baltimore, yesterday was one of the most exhilarating, cathartic, fantastic experiences I’ve ever had.

I am having one hell of a Monday.

It isn’t because it was a completely unexpected win, although it was. It isn’t because we beat our most hated rival, although we did. It isn’t because I got to walk into work today twirling a terrible towel and getting heckled by coworkers, although I did.

It’s because of the smug, overconfident drivel that I’ve had to digest since week one of last year.

Before yesterday’s game, I decided to go into the lions’ den and tailgate at M&T Bank stadium before making the journey across the harbor to the Steelers bar, a cramped corner spot that serves as a safe haven to the fifty Steelers fans that cram themselves in there each Sunday to listen to renegade, twirl our terrible towels, and use language that would make a sailor blush.

It feels like home, for three hours each week during the fall.

During the tailgate, the hubris was thicker than Joe Flacco’s eyebrow. These were fans lining up to see a bullfight. The outcome was predetermined when the schedule was made, and it was all over except for the traditional Gatorade bath. When I asked a Ravens fan to even consider the possibility that Jonathan Dwyer might slash their weak run defense, he laughed, and then replied, “We’re going to put eight in the box and force Charlie what’s his name to throw the ball.”

And throw he did, over and over, to the tune of 276 yards and a heroic victory. Come to think of it, I bet he knows Chuck’s last name by now.

I thoroughly enjoyed walking through Canton square last night with a crowd of displaced Pittsburghers and those planning to finally make the pilgrimage, chanting things we’d never repeat while sober, and walking past Ravens fans that looked caught somewhere between shocked and confused. They were a crowd of fans whose team had just lost their personal super bowl to a 38 year old man that got rocked by Cleveland last week.

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. The Steelers were supposed to be the sacrificial lamb, slaughtered on the altar of another division championship. That was not the case, as Chuck Batch decided that this dog wouldn’t be rolling over anytime soon.

I have never been so excited to see a city as miserable as it is this morning. This loss is so upsetting that last night I got pulled over for being a Steelers fan. I’m not kidding. Fourth amendment violations aside, I was thrilled and amused that a cop decided it was worth breaking the law to hit the sirens, pull over my friend Cait (big shout out to the designated drivers of Steeler nation), and say “Nothin wrong with your drivin, but don’t be twirlin that thing in this city,” in reference to the yellow emblem I was proudly displaying to anyone willing to look.

If you’re ever in Baltimore for a game, please consider stopping by NcDevin’s bar and grill, 801 S Decker, and be sure to stick around after we win, because while this city probably doesn’t like the crow it’s eating this morning, beating the Ravens in Baltimore is delicious.

Ravens Insane To Risk Playing Flacco At Quarterback

(Apologies to Bruce Raffel)

The final decision has not been made on whether or not the Baltimore Ravens will realize that they will never win a championship with Joe Flacco behind center.

Three weeks ago, the Ravens clung to a three point lead provided by a Mike Wallace fumble and a special team’s touchdown to claim the crown for Joe Flacco in what will doubtlessly remembered as one of the greatest quarterback duels in NFL history.

For years, NFL fans have dreamt of Joe Flacco going up against someone who could finally match his skill set of questionable decision making, poor mobility, and a strong yet depressingly inaccurate throwing arm. That dream became a reality three short weeks ago, as the equally awkward Leftwich took the field in a clash of the (quarterbacks who might not start for the) Titans.

In the end, the outcome was decided by Cam Cameron’s shrewd play-calling ability. He called on the wisdom of Championship’s past (note singular tense), and employed the same strategy used in the Ravens' super bowl victory:

Don’t let your inept moron QB throw the ball more times than the other team’s inept moron QB.

Yes, just as Trent Dilfer was permitted to throw fewer times than equally awful Kerry Collins in super bowl XXXV, Joe Flacco was allowed to throw fewer times than Byron “look at me, I can be as tough as Ben but not win when I do that” Leftwich.

To expose a quarterback of Flacco’s ability to any playoff caliber defense, who make him pay for every mistake he makes, would be insane at this point in the season, especially with an otherwise good team, full of hope for a postseason run. Why watch Joe misread man and zone defense, fail to recognize double coverage, and short arm throws at his receivers’ shoelaces, when there is almost no reason to justify it?

The Ravens are still firmly in the hunt for the second overall seed in the AFC. They hold tiebreakers over every team but the Texans, who they’d have to finish a full game ahead of in order to claim the first overall seed. Why jeopardize a perfectly good first round bye by allowing Joe Flacco to throw? Any play other than a handoff to Ray Rice should be a checkdown to Ray Rice, or an intentional throw out of bounds. This would almost certainly ensure them a first round bye.

Taking the risk of putting every game on Joe Flacco’s arm could theoretically result in victory, but at what cost? Flacco is capable of losing to the lowliest of teams, like last year’s Jaguars, and could reduce the Ravens to a wildcard spot if left in control of his team’s destiny.

As much as the Steelers cannot stand the Ravens and their QB (and coach – doucher), there has always been a mutual respect between the two teams, toward Mike Tomlin, the players, and the majority of the civil fans.

However, there has also been a one sided hatred in this rivalry that is so strong that the editor of Baltimore Beatdown finds it necessary to write an eight paragraph article on his opinion of what the Steelers should do with their star quarterback. This is not an indictment of Bruce, it is a microcosm of the insane obsession that the Ravens’ fan base has with the Steelers in general, and I hope that Ravens fans reading this satirical article can see how silly it sounds to have a fan of an opposing team venting his opinions about one of your players.

Now, imagine having bullshit like this written about your team 16+ weeks a year and you’ll know what it’s like to be a Steelers fan.

We've all seen them. The seemingly ubiquitous ads encouraging you to research your genealogy, build your family tree, or otherwise convince you to visit their website to drive their ad revenue.

Recently, driven by the kind of inspiration that can only come from having consumed half of a case of Yuengling, I decided to click on one of the ads to find out where my last name came from and what it means. As I expected, it yielded nothing useful.

Then, for the hell of it, I typed in "Meaning of the name DeCastro." And I was glad I did.

Doing some basic research, I discovered that several of our Pittsburgh Steelers names have meanings that are very much in line with our opinions of the players... We'll explore two rookie linemen, two top receivers, the founder of the organization, and a player that I simply couldn't leave off the list - after the jump.

Recently, driven by the kind of inspiration that can only come from having consumed half of a case of Yuengling, I decided to click on one of the ads to find out where my last name came from and what it means. As I expected, it yielded nothing useful.

We'll explore two rookie linemen, two top receivers, the founder of the organization, and a player that I simply couldn't leave off the list - after the jump.

Before we begin, I need to disclose that the research methods I used wouldn't pass scholarly scrutiny for a 9th grade class, although I'm fairly confident that Morris Claiborne wouldn't either, so I'll take my liberties. I also will point out that the conclusions and parallels I draw can be a bit of a reach, but I'll do my best to justify them. Finally, the awesome imagery that some of the names cast can probably be attributed to the fact that people pick their names on purpose, and it's unlikely that someone will choose a degrading or bland concept to be branded as.

Well, with that out of the way, let's take a look at the player that originally cleared the path for this article:

David Decastro - Beloved Fortress

When "Fortress" came up as the origin of DeCastro, I knew I was on to something. I mean, look at the guy. He's 6'5", 316 pounds of semi-cured concrete. David, as it turns out, means beloved. Is there a player on the team that we love more than DeCastro right now? He's already been deemed The Immaculate Selection, and he hasn't set foot on the playing field yet. We were salivating over the idea of him falling all the way to us, much the same way that I'd salivate over the opportunity to date Kate Upton. It's a beautiful image and something that I'd love to have happen, but it just isn't going to. But then, on draft day, Kate knocked on the door. I remember reading the open thread the day of the draft and imagining all of you jumping up and down and yelling like I was.

Michael (Mike) Adams - Who is like God? Son of Adam.

In the disclaimer, I said I'd be reaching a little bit. Here we go. The "who is like God?" portion is meant to be interpreted as a rhetorical question, the obvious answer being "uh, nobody." This resonates with me for Mr. Adams if taken in the context of humility. The transformation from college Adams (Who is like God? Me, obviously. Are we out of pot already?) to pro Adams (Who is like God? Certainly not me - I'm just happy to be drafted, I don't even want a signing bonus). Now, whether or not Mike sticks to that changed philosophy depends on the second half of his name - Son of Adam. Adam had two sons, Cain (college Adams) and Abel (pro Adams, so far). It will be interesting to see how this develops, but I have a feeling a certain Beloved Fortress of ours might push him in the right direction.

Michael (Mike) Wallace - Who is like God? Foreigner.

Building on the Adams post, Wallace might answer the rhetorical question with "Who is like god? Nobody is like me, but thanks for asking." Confidence is a great thing to have if you want to be good, and it is essential when you want to be great. However, when your ego gets in the way of helping your team and yourself progress, that's a problem. I'm not suggesting that the relationship can't be repaired (see son of Adam above), but there's a lot of work to be done and the arrogance isn't helping things. The "Foreigner" (JUKE box HEROOO) portion currently makes sense because, at least so far, he is not within the boarders of Steeler nation. (I'm hoping that shortly this section of the post will make absolutely no sense).

Antonio Brown - Highly praiseworthy - Dark Complexion

Okay, so I cheated a little bit. There's nothing particularly meaningful about his last name, but I couldn't ignore the meaning of the first. I'm sure my fellow BTSC readers need no explanation on why it applies, so I'll just use this space to congratulate AB on his $42,500,000 worth of praise. Well done, sir.

Isaac Redman - He will laugh - army of might.

This is too perfect. Redman means Army of Might? I couldn't have thought of a better one. Redman is an army of might. Redman will march through you and score. Then Redman will laugh. Then he will score again. Then he will laugh again. Then your son will stop cheering for the team you play for and will buy a Redman jersey. Then your wife will leave you for him.

Arthur (Art) Rooney - Bear King, the Descendant of the Champion

I KNOW, RIGHT?! HOW F------ AWESOME IS THAT?! Arthur comes from two german words meaning Bear and King. Rooney came from an Irish line that was descended from someone who was evidently so awesome that "the champion" was enough to understand who you meant. Sort of how "the great one" needs no explanation in the context of hockey. When someone is that awesome, they transition from mere humanity and become the stuff of legend. Since Art Rooney is the father of the organization, I suppose that makes the Steelers the Descendants of the Champion as well.

(Oh, and because I want Malor to contribute, I looked up "Flacco." It comes from the Spanish "Flaco" meaning Thin, skinny, feeble, or weak. No I did not make that up.)
