After troubled past, undrafted guard Neal earns respect of Spurs

2

"Sometimes Gary Neal forgets he is in the NBA, and assumes he is still in Turkey or Italy or Spain, trying to raise a family an ocean away. Then he sees out of the corner of his eye the Spurs' highlights on television, a figure in black and silver who looks an awful lot like himself, and he recognizes that his whole improbable journey is real..."

Celtics' Rivers, Spurs' Popovich named Coaches of the Month

10

"The Boston Celtics' Doc Rivers and the San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich today were named the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Coaches of the Month, respectively, for games played in October and November. Rivers guided the Celtics to a 13-4 (.765) record, tying Orlando for the best in the Eastern Conference. Boston went 7-1 at home, including a 7-0 mark against Eastern Conference teams. With their .504 field goal percentage, the Celtics are the only team in the NBA shooting 50 percent or better from the field, while also ranking first in the NBA in assists per game (26.5) and first in the Eastern Conference in points per game differential (+7.9). Popovich led the Spurs to an NBA-best 15-2 (.882) record, the best start in franchise history, including 12 straight wins in November. San Antonio is the only team to win all of its road games so far, with key wins at Phoenix, Oklahoma City, Utah and New Orleans. While the Spurs' 107.8 points per game rank third in the NBA, their +9.0 differential leads the league."

Onion - Tim Duncan Spends Free Time Trying To Get Wrongfully Incarcerated Man Off Death Row

3

"MANSFIELD, OH — Spurs center Tim Duncan spent all his free time this week studying law books and building a case in an attempt to exonerate a death row inmate wrongfully incarcerated at Ohio's Mansfield Correctional Institution. "For more than 10 years, Randolph Morgan has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, mainly because of the testimony of an unreliable witness, one Cheryl McInerney," said Duncan, who has devoted the past three offseasons to earning a law degree at San Antonio State and in August passed the bar exam in both Texas and Ohio. "I have met with medical examiners and several forensic pathologists, and they concur that the available DNA evidence is more than sufficient to prove the innocence of my client." Duncan went on to score [tk] points against the Los Angeles Clippers Monday night before flying to Ohio to persuade the governor to issue a stay of execution for Morgan."

Chris Kramer to workout with the Spurs

""Hopefully when I leave (San Antonio), I'll put myself in a better position with a team I didn't get to work out with during the process," Kramer said. "So just a chance to get more eyes on you. People that really understand the game of basketball. I think the Spurs organization is one of the best. They're always right there in the NBA competing for championships. I have a lot of respect for the organization so to get the opportunity to go down there, I'm very excited for."
