Guillen signs four-year extension

CHICAGO -- The White Sox may have the worst record in baseball, but that has not stopped the team's management from making a major commitment to the face of the franchise, manager Ozzie Guillen.

General manager Ken Williams announced that the club has signed Guillen to a four-year contract extension that will take the Sox skipper through the 2012 season.

Guillen's contract was set to end following the 2008 campaign with an option for 2009.

Guillen, 43, has been one of the most controversial managers in the Major Leagues throughout his first four seasons at the helm. He has made news on a number of occasions for emotional outbursts and his openness to say nearly everything that is on his mind.

White Sox' refusal to add no-trade clause kills 4-year, $56 million proposal, says Joe Cowley:

According to a source outside the organization but familiar with the situation, talks between Buehrle and the Sox broke down because the club would not put a no-trade clause into a proposed four-year, $56 million deal. The source also told the Sun-Times that general manager Ken Williams wasted no time taking phone calls from both the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers about a possible trade involving the left-handed starter. Whitesox.com says the same: A source close to the situation confirmed to MLB.com that the negotiations between the two sides have stalled over the issue of a no-trade clause in the deal, which was reported to be a four-year pact in the range of $56 million. The money or amount of years no longer appear to be an obstacle, but the no-trade clause apparently is a deal-breaker for both sides.
