An interesting example of NCAA bureaucracy's triumph over common sense.
This summer, Emil Smith, a senior-to-be high school football player, committed to play for Boise State after he graduates next spring. Tragically, he and his brother both died in a car accident July 18th.
NCAA rules prohibit Boise State's coaches from contacting the player's family in any way, like sending flowers, making a phone call, etc., or even attending the funeral.

AM Notes: Thanks for posting, Alan. This is another huge loss at RB for a C-USA West Rival. Opeseyitan, a junior, had 573 yards and four touchdowns in his two seasons at TU.
Last week, Houston's stellar running back Charles Sims was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for the entire 2010 season. Also, Mike Price has taken his share of criticism for past player misconduct and legal troubles. This off-season, save an incident that involved former players, has been very peaceful. Here's hoping it stays that way.

Today, while wearing my UTEP cycling jersey, I happened to ride by the Mike Stoops Football Camp on the University of Arizona mall. The camp is lots of senior high school football players who want to play college FB and who are being evaluated by UA coaches. As I rode by, I raised my pick-axe hand sign high and shouted "UTEP!!" and "MINERS!!!" a bunch of times. I got almost all of them to turn their heads to see what was up!!
