McClain reports Elias has taken a sack away from J.J. Watt, but I call BS on the ruling.

McClain via Twitter: J.J. Watt no longer leads the NFL n sacks. Elias Sports Bureau says a Watt sack against Miami was actually a run, leaving him with 7.5. Watt now has 7.5 sacks, one-half...

It’s not the time to rush to judgment in Belak death

1
One day after Wade Belak died, the urge to howl for change remained raw. A single death is a tragedy, two is another, but three seems like a sudden pattern of fighters dying alone, in a terrible kind of anguish. And the immediate impulse, after sadness, is to scream that something needs to be done to make sure this never happens again. But that’s not quite how this works, or how it should work...

A scientific perspective on Sidney Crosby's prolonged recovery.

33
[Dr. Michael] Collins [Crosby's doctor] couldn’t discuss [his] initial injury or his current progress, but our discussion on the real nature of concussions—both how they occur and how athletes recover from them—can help to debunk the maelstrom of rumors, misunderstandings and inconsistencies surrounding Crosby’s eight months of post-concussion limbo. 1. A concussion is not a headache, and overcoming it has nothing to do with toughness 2. The worst thing you can do when suffering from a concussion is return too soon 3. The alarmists need to calm down. This is not career ending.

An excellent piece on why things went wrong for Neal last season and why they'll go right for him this time around.

Dustin Jeffrey says he'll be ready for the start of training camp

6
"I should be ready for training camp (in early September). I'm a few weeks ahead of schedule," Jeffrey says. He expects to be cleared for skating after meeting with his surgeon and team trainers upon his return to Pittsburgh in about three weeks. "I feel really good right now," he says. "My rehab has been going very well." As for his new contract, Jeffrey says it's rewarding that the club view him as part of their future. "Pittsburgh is a place I wanted to stay. I've been with them my entire professional career. There's a family atmosphere within the organization."

Here is how those inside the team describe Crosby's current situation: • His work is prescribed in advance by doctors, and that includes the pattern of when he skates, when he works out off the ice, and when he has a day of rest. None of those, according to the team, is an indication of his status. • Crosby's aim is to be in shape, so that he would be ready to play as soon as possible in these playoffs after he is fully cleared. He is not preparing for the next training camp, and he certainly is not doing it to be a decoy. The goal is to have his conditioning at the point where he could compete -- safely -- at the highest intensity level of hockey. Regaining full strength in his neck muscles, for example, would lessen the impact of any hit that jars the head. Some will recall that, after the first hit on Crosby by Washington's David Steckel, in the Jan. 1 Winter Classic he spoke of feeling neck pain, but no concussion symptoms. • Anytime word emerges that Crosby is meeting with doctors, a buzz tends to follow in anticipation that the meeting could be pivotal. The reality is that Crosby is in communication with his doctors -- and the athletic trainers -- every day without fail.

Crosby's situation is simpler than it appears

Dear Mr. Crosby, Hi. My name is Claire [redacted] and I am 3 years old. I miss you very much. I wear your jersey pretty much every day when Mommy lets me. I have two. One’s green. I want your boo boo on your brain to go away, so I drew you a get well card. I hope you get better soon. I miss you. Love, Claire A month later, she got a letter back from Sid and an autographed picture. That's Church Here's the picture of little Claire admiring her new collector's item.

Encounter with Crosby warms the heart of family

7
Sidney Crosby actually pulled up behind my family and me in the parking lot adjacent to the Consol Energy Center and asked, from his vehicle, who the young man in front of me was. I did manage, after a brief moment of awe, to introduce him to Kyle, and proceeded to ask Kyle if he knew who this man in the suit and tie was. (The two are only a year apart in age). Kyle - being Kyle - squealed with happiness and did a dance in his wheelchair in confirmation. .......................... I really think everyone should know what kind of man "Sid" is. He, who has won nearly every imaginable honor and award in the NHL and received a gold medal at the Olympics, stopped a young man with cerebral palsy on the street just to say hello and see how his night was. It touched my heart - and my life - to see him smile at my brother. He is a shining beacon of light and a true hero to anyone who has ever loved the sport of hockey.

Acrobatic Bylsma Has Kept Penguins Thriving

3
"I think the biggest thing is how positive he is and energetic," Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik told NHL.com. "You get to the rink in the morning and he's got music blasting, he's doing cartwheels in (the locker room). That's not an exaggeration, either." ...... Shero said the day after the Islanders game he talked to Bylsma about a contract for the rest of the season, and assured him that regardless of how the rest of the season went, the young coach had a guaranteed job with the team. "I said, Dan, I don't know how this is going to go, but you've got your job back in Wilkes-Barre, don't worry," Shero said. "I hired you to do a job in Wilkes-Barre. Let's hope for the best and see what happens. The goal is to make the playoffs and see what happens."

Crosby return could come soon

34
Those associated with the Penguins are expecting to hear "Crosby is cleared" sometime soon from a team physician. At that point, which Crosby confidants are cautiously optimistic could come within the week — he will resume full practices, with sights set on playing in, if not before, the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Crosby: "I feel good"

23
"I feel good," a smiling Crosby told the Star after he stepped off the ice at the Consol Energy Center on Friday morning "F---in’ right," said Penguins forward Maxime Talbot, impressed with his captain. "[His backhand's] stronger than my forehand," he joked with the trainers, before yelling at Crosby: "C’mon champ, you’re fine." "He’s like dog poop, he’s everywhere," said forward Arron Asham... "We see him around; he’s always got a smile on his face. He’s happy to be around and we’re happy to have him." "Being away from the game, he’s probably discovering new things about himself that he didn’t know." Like what? "He started knitting," Dupuis said, tongue firmly in cheek. My God, I love this team.

Don Cherry: Mario Lemieux is "one of the biggest phonies I've ever seen in my life"

48
"He should have been tossed for what happened to Savard, but they said they didn’t have a rule," Cherry said. "The guy never even got four minutes or anything for that. If he had got [suspended for] 20 games then, maybe he would have been straightened out. He should have been suspended for what he did to Savard and he got his comeuppance. … They should have given him 20-30 games back then and it might have straightened the little rat out." Cherry added that Mario Lemieux, who complained about dirty play following last month’s game against the Islanders, is "one of the biggest phonies I’ve ever seen in my life." "He says, ‘we have to get ride of headshots,’ and the [president], Dave Morehouse, says ‘we have to get rid of headshots,’ and [general manager] Ray Shero, who I really like, says the same thing. What happens? They’ve got the [biggest] headshot guy of all time, they’re paying his paychecks. What a bunch of hypocrites, I’ll tell you."

Mario Lemieux's Letter to Gary Bettman

10

Somehow, ESPN obtained a letter from Mario addressed to the commissioner, which was addressed with the date of March 7th. A bit of a snippet: "While there have been 50-plus suspensions since the start of the 2009-10 season, the suspensions themselves don't seem to be deterring these illegal acts and tactics," wrote Lemieux. "And we've often seen repeat offenders. We think it is time that teams also are held accountable for the actions of their players. We propose instituting a policy of automatically fining a team when one if its players is suspended -- with the amount of the fine based on the length of the suspension. This should serve as a disincentive for teams as well as players to employ these kinds of tactics."
