The Crosby family nightmare: Taylor Crosby also recovering from concussion

62

What a nightmare for their parents--both kids have concussions! As much as I feel for Sid, I can't even imagine trying to do well in school while getting over a concussion. I hope Shattuck worked something out with Taylor if the symptoms were affecting her school work.

Sometime before his career is over, Kris Letang is going to win a Norris or two. One of the reasons he's improved is that he takes things a lot more seriously, but Bylsma adds, "He's only halfway to where he can be."

Taylor Crosby stands tall in goal while her big brother is the center of attention

...[Sidney's] advised [Taylor] that she can’t have a boyfriend until she’s at least 35 or 40. Oh God, Sid...good luck with that. Typical. "When he was my age, he wouldn’t give up," she said. "He has this drive and I don’t know where he got it from. It’s just so inspiring to watch. You just wish you had that. I just started to get that drive. When I think I can’t go anymore in practice, I think well, he wouldn’t give up so why should I? Even though he’s had success, he’s still hungry." "I’ve gotten better," she said. "I used to yell at the guys when I was about 6 years old and get mad at them. I didn’t want them to hurt him. It’s almost like ‘Don’t give the puck to him so he doesn’t get hit.’ "

Konopka picks new fight with Lemieux, NHL

24

*Sigh -"I can’t believe (Mario) is so far removed from the game that he doesn’t realize in the heat of the moment what happens," -"You look at Trevor Gillies," said Konopka. "He’s a first time offender. He hits a guy, throws a few punches, he gets a nine-game suspension. The guy’s got a wife, two kids and plays in the East Coast Hockey League and AHL most of his career and now he’s going to lose $35,000." -"Montreal and Boston, they play a game and it’s great old-time hockey, it’s ‘wow, this is awesome, the rivalry’," Konopka continued. "Then we have a game and now we’re getting crucified for it. We’re doing everything possible to keep guys in the lineup, to fight for points, to do everything we can to win hockey games and everybody keeps taking shots at us. Talk to our trainers (about) how many man games we’ve lost. We’ve lost 360 games to injuries and now we’re getting crucified because we’re trying to have some retribution for a couple of our guys getting knocked out. It’s tough for us to deal with." -"I don’t understand how this $100,000 gets thrown into the mix," he said. "We have a bright future in Long Island and we’re excited for it and we can’t wait to grow with this team.

"Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be. But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn’t hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that. "The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed. "We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action. "If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to re-think whether I want to be a part of it."

Shero: shutting down Crosby for season has "never been thought of"

2
He is with family at an undisclosed warm-weather location, where he is continuing what the Penguins have described as "functional rehab" that includes light exercises. He has not been cleared for workouts... Shero stressed patience regarding Crosby’s recovery from a concussion that has left him with symptoms that still include occasional headaches..."We just need be patient, and when he feels better, there’s probably something to update in terms of progressing. To me, it’s not about a time frame, it’s about patience."

PensBurghers, how tall are you? FOR WOMEN ONLY.

Somewhere, deep inside the "Geno's gone for the season" thread, we got to talking about the average height of the women of PensBurgh. We're all very curious to find out the answer, so please vote...

No need to explain, we all know the reason for this...

An Essay by Sid Crosby

36

Found an old gem written by an 18 year old Capt. Cros. It's interesting because you see the same attitude, in the essay, that Sid still has today. I think that's pretty remarkable--6 years of NHL experience and your values haven't changed since you've been drafted. That speaks volumes to just how little all the pressure and media has affected him. My favorite quote: When I was 16 and knew I might have the opportunity to get drafted, I wanted to go No. 1. My parents always told me, if you want to go first, make it easy on yourself. Don't be sitting there on draft day thinking, am I going to go No. 1, No. 2, No. 3? Make it easy for them.

CBC Player Poll

23
Top Vote Getters on the Penguins: Bylsma: -Coach players would most like to play for (21%) Crosby (I think it's pretty clear who the players think is the best in the world; nice to see Sid get some respect): -The Smartest (29%) -Best role model (26%) -The toughest forward to play against (29%) -The toughest player overall to face (29%) -Top player to start a franchise with (69%; next highest total was 6%). Penguins that weren't the top vote getter but still placed: Crosby: -Best Skater (2nd place, 17%) -Player that's the most difficult to stop (2nd place, 24%; 3 percent behind Ovechkin) -Player that's the hardest to take the puck off of (2nd place, 24%) Granato: -Asst. Coach that should become a head coach (3rd place, 6%) Bylsma: -Coach that demands the most of his players (5th, 4%) -Coach that's the easiest to play for (3rd place, 8%) For a summary of the poll, click here.

The Penguins don't have much cap room, but Ray Shero likes to add at the deadline. It sounds like teams are trying to find out if Alex Goligoski could be available. Don't think the Penguins are looking to move him; he's really talented and signed for a cap-friendly $1.833 million US through next season. But, that's a crowded blue-line, especially with Kris Letang's growth. If they can't afford him long-term, would they consider it in a trade that could really make a difference?

Crosby: I feel better, but no timetable for return

81

Some quotes from Sid: On how he feels: I’ve definitely gotten better. It’s kind of hard to judge because it’s not something I’ve gone through, but I’m progressing. On the symptoms: It’s on and off. As far as symptoms, it’s mostly headaches. Once you get better, you realize how far you’ve come. Some days you feel good. You feel like you’ve made progress. Some days are a little bit tougher. That’s all tied into this type of injury. On timetable: It has gotten better. It’s tough to put a timetable on it. I feel like I’ve progressed a lot, especially the past week or so. Hopefully that’s a good sign. One more quote from Dan Bylsma: On Sidney Crosby’s personality and mental state: If you spent time with him right now, you wouldn’t think that (he was frustrated). He spent a lot of time at the rink talking hockey and watching other teams play, looking at different teams’ power plays. He spent a lot of time focusing on the game and looking at the game in different areas since he’s been sidelined a little bit. I actually remarked several times about how he’s alert, normal and thinking about the game and helping out the coaching staff. We told him the last couple games that he better wear a suit and come to the rink with us and sit in the back room with us, talking about different parts of the power play and watching other teams. You can read the rest of Sid's and Coach Bylsma's comments by clicking the link above.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero told ESPN.com that Staal has been medically cleared to play, but Staal missed training camp and the first 39 regular-season games, making his conditioning a concern. He will remain a game-time decision. UPDATE: As you all probably know by now, Staal will make his season debut tonight.

Five theories about what's wrong with Alex Ovechkin

Malkin, Fleury Not Far from Spots in ASG; Sid, Letang Continue to Lead

3

Sid is still way ahead of everyone. And Tanger is also still tops in defensemen voting by nearly 60,000 votes. Geno, however, has jumped ahead of Ovechkin for the 4th spot in the voting among forwards; he's now behind Stamkos by less than 9,000 votes. Flower has made up some ground too: he's in second place, but has nearly 32,000 votes to go to catch up to Carey Price. It's on now--I'm now voting for all the Pens twice a day. I want to see as many Pens in the starting lineup as possible. The complete All-Star Voting results are here.

21

Having Crosby soaring and Ovechkin grimacing isn’t necessarily good for promoting the bejeezus out of another gimmicky hockey game in a football stadium...The struggles of one star compared to the new heights of another aren’t necessarily bad for the narrative [of the new HBO show, 24/7]. But the Capitals have historically been so sensitive to any perceived criticism of Ovechkin or suggestion that he is anything but Crosby’s equal (nasty anti-Russian Canadian media) that the temptation for Ted (Mr. Pursuit of Happiness) Leonsis to intervene or blog or whine will probably be irresistible.
