27 September OT - Why not?

Sure, the baseball season is moribund, as are the Mariners (as ever), but dammit I still want an OT. Why not? I saw the #exitsandman hashtag trending on twitter. I knew that it referred to Mariano...

M's 2014 schedule

+

Open at LAAnaheim on 31 March. Home opener also against the Angels, on 8 April (last game of the season will also be against the Angels). Still have the idiotic two-game "series" bookended by off days, as well as a 7-day road trip in May during which only 5 games will be played. No off days from 6 June to 25 June. Just one out-of-division series in September (22-25 at Toronto). Interleague: 18-20 April @ MIA 3-4 June @ ATL 16-19 June vs/@ SD 21-23 July vs NYM (first visit to Safeco?) 5-6 August vs ATL 18-20 August @ PHI 29-31 August vs WAS Season ends with 10 on the road, then 3 at home against LAA

Abe Almonte called up

I haven't seen this mentioned here yet. Erasmo Ramirez is technically sent down, but he'll be an expanded roster callup and make his next scheduled start just fine (he's not even leaving the team).

In which the author counts down her 10 favourite Ichiro moments (with videos for all)

Ichiro is one of the greatest players ever to play the game, let alone in a Mariner uniform, and I can't wait for the day he's in Cooperstown with an S on his head. I thought it would be fun to...

Zunino DL'd, could miss rest of 2013

Is Jesus Sucre ready to come back? If not, um...who the fuck is the second catcher NOW?

No-hitter for Mariners farmhand

6

18 year old right-hander Victor Sanchez of the class single-A Clinton LumberKings just blanked the Lansing Lugnuts. Clinton win 1-0, getting only 4 hits themselves. But what a thrill for the young man. Anyone in the comments answer whether he's any kind of a prospect?

Merkle's Boner 2013

+

This is sorta cool. Props to the centrefielder, and whatever-the-opposite-of-props is to the baserunner. Dude never came within 50 feet of second base. But I bet he never does this ever again.

Former pitcher Justin Miller found dead

He pitched in spring training for the Mariners in 2011, and briefly for AAA Tacoma that April. RIP.

Rays' Cobb hit in the head with line drive

Looks like he'll be fine. But with this coming so soon after JA Happ, it's no doubt going to start a dialogue. (more below in comments)

BYU men's volleyball NCAA final four preview

+

I'm glad some of your site authors have been covering the team themselves. They're worth the attention. Black Shoe Diaries, who do exemplary coverage of Penn State women's volleyball, don't have anything up on their main page about men's. Aaaaand I'm not planning on posting this link there. Yeah, your boys are pretty well favoured.

Interesting story on trans volleyball player

+

Peachy Tabilos for the City College of San Francisco. She hasn't had surgery, so by rule she has to play on the men's team. But she doesn't seem to mind, and her coaches and teammates are very supportive.

Saunders named MVP of WBC Pool D

8 for 11 with three walks, a home run, and 7 RBI. Performing well is better than not performing well. (Better link now, addresses Saunders directly)

BYU men's volleyball demolish Pacific

+

And they're not a bad team (though they're on a 4-match slide now). BYU look pretty good for an NCAA tournament berth, though the reality is it's probably 2 spots for 3 teams with them, UC Irvine, and Long Beach State (with Stanford still potentially able to play spoiler, but they're outside-looking-in as of now). In this wide open volleyball season, I couldn't even guess who it'll be.

Stanford men's volleyball remind me why I'm a sports fan

+

Stanford and Hawaii volleyball just concluded a two-night series. I don't even know what I can say about it anymore. These guys played with hunger, with passion, with heart, with determination. It was thrilling. It made my heart soar. It brought me to tears. It really did, because it so does remind me why I'm a volleyball fan, and a fan of sports in general. I know everybody in America is geared up for that football game in a few hours, but I hope you always remember that sports don't have to mean millionaires squabbling with billionaires. That raw love of the game is still something that exists, and that it is a fiercely beautiful thing to behold. Whatever your chosen sport or sports, I hope you have the moments like I had tonight. Moments that make you not only want to heap praise upon your sporting heroes, but to thank them. To thank them for giving so much, for everything they do. I can count on my fingers the number of times I've ever felt the way I do after this match, and last night's, and it is truly one of the best feelings in the world. If anyone ever questions why I'm a sports fan...it's nights like this that are the answer. This is why sports are worth it.

BYU men's volleyball defeat Lewis in straight sets

+

After dropping last night's match despite having been up 2-0, it was a very strong showing tonight for the Cougars. Perhaps most encouraging for BYU fans was the fact that freshman outside hitter Ben Patch played what was really his first complete match as a collegian. First three matches this season, he played scintillating first sets only to fade as the match went on. Tonight, he was error-free on 15 swings for an .800 hitting percentage as BYU cruised to victory. Next up for the Cougars is an important conference matchup with UC Irvine. The Anteaters were picked preseason to win the MPSF and the Cougars to finish second, so it's a battle of two highly-rated teams.

Stanford men's volleyball defeats George Mason to go to 2-0 early in the season

+

Very entertaining match. Mason were a little bit in over their heads, but still this one counts for a bit more than last night's win over Grand Canyon or next Friday's match with Division III UC Santa Cruz. Conference play begins for the Cardinal next Saturday against Pacific, who also beat Mason this weekend (the Patriots are 0-2 on the season). This is an exciting team, but whether they have enough to get past UC Irvine or BYU, the big conference heavyweights, to make it to the NCAA tournament remains to be seen.

BYU men's volleyball easily dispatches Hawaii

1

They looked very solid in a three-set victory over Hawaii, who are admittedly a bit of a conference lightweight. The Cougars will have to find the best lineup combination to carry them through the season before tougher competition arrives, as they had several players at nearly every position in last night's match.

Volleyball national championship preview

This one's a damn toss-up. Seriously. Flip a freaking coin.

My feeble attempt at a national championship preview

Honestly, I don't feel as though I have much here, but maybe you guys'll enjoy the read =P

Volleyball Final Four match report

+

I hope you watched it personally, because there's nothing in the world quite like championship volleyball (so says this volleyball geek). If you weren't, get the lowdown on how your Oregon Ducks advanced to the national championship match, or if you were, relive Oregon's history-making win one more time.

Michigan/Texas Final Four volleyball matchup

+

Michigan are the Cinderella story of this NCAA tournament, and their run continues tomorrow night in the national semifinals against Texas. They've got a tough matchup with the Longhorns, but they sure haven't gotten this far because they were the favorites in any previous matches. I expect them to come out loose and fearless, since they quite literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It will be interesting to see how they fare back in Louisville, where their run began. (disclosure: This is my personal blog)

Texas/Michigan Final Four volleyball analysis

+

Hook 'Em Horns are certainly the favorites tomorrow night in Louisville, but they must not look past Michigan. The Wolverines wouldn't have made it this far if they didn't deserve to, and will have nothing to lose (and will play like it). But a strong outing from Bailey-and-Haley ought to get it done.

Oregon/Penn State Final Four volleyball analysis

+

I'm expecting a fiercely competitive match between two offensively-minded (yet at the same time, quite different) teams. It will actually be my first chance to see Oregon live this season (blasted Pac-12 Network), so I'm excited for that as well. (disclosure: This is my personal blog)

Penn State/Oregon volleyball Final Four analysis

+

Should be a fun match between two high-powered offenses. I see Penn State as the slight favorites, but it bears pointing out that Oregon defeated one of the two teams to beat Penn State this year in order to earn their tickets to Louisville. (disclosure: this is my own blog)

Louisville volleyball wins the Big East tournament

2

Very good match. The Cardinals overcame a less-than-stellar performance from 2-time conference Player of the Year Lola Arslanbekova to claim a three-set win against a game Marquette squad (who I wouldn't want to draw in round one of the NCAA tournament). As a televised match, it was a very nice showcase for what is with little doubt the weakest of the power six conferences for volleyball. (disclosure: this is my personal blog that I'm linking to. If that's not cool, let me know)

Report on Florida State volleyball's win over Duke

+

This match (which JUST ended seconds ago, making my report the first on the web) was intriguing. The Seminoles are handily the better team, and played like it in the first set, but in sets two and three Duke was a lot more resilient. They also played like a team chock-full of freshmen and sophomores, though, leading to the Noles' three-set win.

I don't get it

3

'99-'05 Tours have no winners, but Wiggins gets promoted to the podium in '09? Selective treatment? Because Wiggins is one of the good guys and Ullrich isn't? I'm struggling to understand how this makes sense.

Report on Wake Forest volleyball's awesome win over NC State

3

This was one hell of a match. It puts a small damper on NC State's NCAA tournament resume - tell me, is that a bonus in addition to feeling good about the win, or would it only be that way for UNC or Duke? (I genuinely don't know...I feel like the four Carolina schools all have their rivalries, but it's not as well known when Duke and UNC aren't in the picture) And yes, this is my blog. If that's a problem (I've seen some SBN sites that don't approve of this), I'll take this down.

Did you know at the time?

Suspect? Cynically guess? I'm just looking for people's stories here. The internet wasn't exactly the indispensable piece of our everyday lives at the beginning of that Tour de France run that...
