Hockey Prospectus: NYI system is 2nd Overall

82

"Through high picks and shrewd late round selections the Islanders have built a heck of a system with great upside and crazy depth. There were several quality prospects I left off the top ten just because of the system's depth. Considering the fact the Islanders have graduated names like Ty Wishart and Travis Hamonic and the other young players on the big club, the young talent in this organization is nothing short of elite. They have upside and depth at both skater positions, and have two quality young goalies in Kevin Poulin and Mikko Koskinen. There is no weakness to this system at all really, and a lot to love." What's really interesting here is Kabanov ranked 2nd (above Nino).

Queens awaits Nassau Vote-Daily News

An interesting view from the Queens point of view. If the vote turns out no they are ready to push for an arena at Willets (but the expectation is that the referendum passes).

Newsday Official Editorial: Vote Yes

Addresses the potential tax increase involved and says it's still better than letting the place fall apart.

Would the Islanders Really Leave? -Forbes

21

Not a very deep piece but the points are valid enough. Is there really any place for the Islanders to move (other than another part of the Island) that is better and will be available within the next 3-4 years? Probably not.

Who misses the net the most/least? : TSN

We had 3 of the top 25 "missed mosts" on forward though 2 might come as a surprise. Milan Jurcina was one of the most accurate D-Men at 13.

Do the Isles even need to reach the Cap Floor?

4

The end of this Puck Daddy article seems to say no. The worst the league can do is take away their revenue share...which does not exist anyway. Or they could treat them bad...which is no change to how the team is treated now.

Strome has added 5 pounds since the combine: Newsday

16

With a rather full roster up front we have all seemed to have discounted the chances of Strome making the team (past the 9 game taste). But is there a chance he pulls a Jeff Skinner?

Jason Gregoire to sign with Winnepeg Jets?

10

"The Jets could be considering adding some Manitoba content when free agency starts later this week. They had a meeting at the draft with Winnipegger Jason Gregoire, 22, who was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2007. Gregoire, a heady, smart left-winger, went unsigned and will leave the University of North Dakota after three years to become an NHL free agent."

Psychology of a high draft pick

5

A look in to how and why teams hold on to high draft picks longer irregardless of skill or production. I would say that Ricky's contract was a huge part of this psychology. It's also why teams don't give a player like Matt Moulson time to prove himself at the top level and if they do a bad week or two could shut that window.

With the NHL's broadcast partner showing the games you can bet there will be added pressure for the NHL to allow it's athletes to participate in Sochi.

NHL Bribery Market

18

The Winnepeg Whatevers will not annouce their team name until they reach 13,000 season tickets sold. This article asks what other ways can NHL teams/players play the bribery game. Feel free to leave your own ideas in the comments as well. and FYI if they did the their idea for the Islanders I'd buy tickets in a heartbeat.

Off-Season Game Plan: NYI- TSN

A truly great in depth write-up from Scott Cullen. A total look at where the Isles are and what UFA's & picks they should be looking at.

Nabokov 'may be best option' for Flyers-THN

13

Not the first place this rumor has popped up. I'm not sure what the Isles could get in a deal. Philly has nearly the worst prospect pool right now and most of the guys worth something (JvR) are untouchable. Other than picks who could the Isles get? Versteeg? Nodl? I really don't see a good fit here and being in the same division would make me think that barring something too good to pass on that Nabokov would be traded elsewhere.
