07/08 Open Rosterbation/Trade Deadline Thread

Well, the trade deadline's approaching and the Mariners are surefire buyers for the first time in some years. That's very exciting! Or terrifying! You decide! Either way, when contending, it's...

The Front Office's Aversion to Outfielders

The Jack Z rebuilding plan has reached year six, bearing very little fruit in terms of regular season success. However, the team has built a nice, young infield core, a shaky, but...

What Can We Expect of Franklin Gutierrez’s Defense in 2013?

The Mariners recently brought back Franklin Gutierrez on a one-year, $1 million contract, plus incentives, a move greeted mostly by praise. He fits an obvious need, the contract is a low...

Trade Target: Ryan Hanigan

LL's Offseason Plan was recently dealt it's first blow when Geovany Soto re-signed with the Rangers. The Mariners badly need some depth at catcher, and a potential value just became available. ...

Could this be the year Mark Prior makes it back to the Majors?

3

Always a fan of the washed-out phenoms on the comeback trail. Mark Prior was one of the most exciting pitchers I had ever watched. In his first 5.2 innings in AAA this year, he has absolutely dominated. Even just making it back would be an incredible story for a guy who has never stopped trying despite being impossibly fragile.

Bowden: Astros to take Appel #1

Isn't entirely shocking, but if it's true, leaves either Buxton or Correa for us, if Z and McNamara want them.

Darvish for 6/$60M+$10M in incentives

A bit less than I expected. This seems like it leaves them a lot of flexibility to pursue Hamilton or Prince. Could be an absolute steal on the contract alone, but including posting fee it is, of course, a bit pricey.

Iwakuma signs for 1/1.5 mil+incentives

Up to 4.9 million based on starts and IP. Seems like a great deal to me.

Mariners in Line to Get Huge Increase in TV Rights Fees

Found this pretty interesting. The Rangers TV deal (80 million a year) starts in 2014 while the Mariners can opt out of theirs after 2015 and sign one likely upwards of 70 million.

Japanese FA Kawasaki will only play for Mariners

Wants to play with Ichiro, and says he will accept a minor league deal. He doesn't look terribly impressive with the bat, but has gotten good reviews on defense and baserunning. Would probably be good middle infield depth to stash in the minors.

Mariners Interested in Seth Smith

+

He could make a pretty good platoon partner with Casper Wells, but isn't a great piece by himself and seems a little overrated. The Braves had interest in him as the headliner of a Prado deal, which I think would be a better use of him.

Casper Wells, emergency pitcher

I immediately like him more and await our next blowout.

James Paxton promoted to AA Jackson

+

Posted very high strikeout (12.86 K/9) and walk (4.86 BB/9) totals in his time at Class A.

Mariners one of three finalists for Duchscherer

Along with the Orioles and Nationals. What a choice he has to make.
