STOP declares victory, gives up petition drive
"Our efforts paid off much faster than we expected. In a matter of six weeks, largely because of our opposition, Mayor Johnson’s TAXPAYER SUBSIDIZED deal to build a Railyard Arena for the Kings collapsed."
"While we have reduced our signature gathering effort, we are prepared to increase it again should the need arise. We will remain vigilant and continue to actively monitor the Railyard’s development to insure that public monies are not expended on an arena there."
The main advantage [to amnesty] is the ability to go out and spend it again. That's not something we've really had much discussion about, the second part of it. Just in it of itself, it just creates more room and less tax and if you're not going to spend the money again it doesn't make any difference.
From the extended Petrie Q&A on the SacBee Kings Blog. Apparently, Geoff didn't get the memo from George that they're totally ready to start spending money to make this team good.

Petition to Maloofs: Sell the team
I created this petition on change.org last week because I'd decided that I was done playing nice with the Maloofs, and that my desire for new owners now trumped my fear of pissing off the current ones. I hesitated, however, and decided not to share it. After seeing that Sacramento business leaders have decided to take a stand against the Maloofs and send their own letter to the Board of Governors urging new ownership, I'm emboldened again to give fans and other concerned individuals a chance to send a unified message that it's past time for the Maloofs to do the right thing and sell the team.
I understand the concerns of those that are uncomfortable with this kind of thing, and I'm not going to try to convert anyone that thinks this is a bad idea. But if you're ready to put your name down as someone who no longer trusts the Maloofs at the wheel of something that is so important to you, please sign this petition and share it widely.

Tyreke Evans- Return of the Kings
New ownership group of 76ers includes Jason Levien
"The NBA announced on Tuesday that the sale of the Philadelphia 76ers to a group headed by billionaire leveraged-buyout specialist Joshua Harris and David Blitzer [...] has been unanimously approved [...] Harris will be the team’s representative on the league’s Board of Governors"
[...]
"The ownership group also includes actor and musician Will Smith, a Philadelphia native, as well as Jason Levien, a former NBA player agent and executive with the Sacramento Kings."
Former short-term Petrie protégé gettin' jiggy wit' it.

Kansas City masterpiece: Does it offer a model for Sacramento's arena?
In a Special to the Bee, a Kansas City columnist and "recovering naysayer" describes how the Sprint Center overcame the hurdles of a public-private partnership to be built, and how it has delivered on the promises of the "believers".
DeMarcus Cousins Visits Tuscaloosa to Aid Tornado Relief
DeMarcus being all immature and red-flaggy, yet again (note: please switch your sarcasm meters on before reading this description).
Captain Buzzkill: the battle ahead
Part of me really wants to ignore all of the questions that have been running through my head over the past couple of days and just ride the wave of good feelings from the return of the Kings for as long as I possibly can. I'd love if I could push the relocation trifles to the back of my mind and dive right in to draft prospects and lottery hopes, but I just can't do it. If you're still riding the wave, don't let me knock you off it. Don't read past the jump, hang ten, and just ignore me. This thread is for chronically serious buzzkills only, and based on a lot of what I've been seeing in other threads, I'm not completely alone. I promise to join the party when I'm ready.

Bee: Anaheim sweetening the pot by millions in effort to lure Kings
Samueli agreeing to spend a great deal more money to get the Maloofs to file and the NBA to agree to it.
A Regional Effort: good news? Maybe? How? Let's Speculate.
I believe it was right after Mayor Johnson's "Proposal Heard 'Round the World" at the Board of Governor's meeting a couple of weeks ago that we really started hearing about this shift to a "regional effort" that somehow gave Sacramento's hopes for a new arena a chance that it didn't have in prior failed attempts. Now we have news that a Regional Authority is being formed with the 6 counties that make up the greater Sacramento area to oversee funding of the new complex (though, it appears that there is now reason to believe that this news may not be true. But the dramatic move towards a regional effort is very real, in any case). I've been wondering what this regional effort means exactly. How can the good people of Yolo, Placer, and the other surrounding counties really help to build a new arena in downtown Sacramento? I don't question why they would want to help, I just struggle to comprehend what form that help will take. We know that this thing will take some kind of public-private partnership to get done. Assuming that there will be no public vote on a general tax increase in Sacramento or any county, and knowing that some combination of hotel/cab/airport taxes or fees really only make sense in Sacramento County, what in the world can the surrounding counties really do to help with the one thing that has always been lacking, the funding?
Hope is Here, but Why?
A week ago, we were preparing for what may have been the final NBA game in Sacramento. After that game, many of us mourned the loss of our team like we would mourn the loss of a loved one, a mourning that was deep for a loss that was total and permanent. And then, the very next day at the Board of Governor's meeting, a dramatic proposal for the sake of Sacramento and an underwhelming proposal on behalf of Anaheim delivered to us a reason to hope that our team is not yet gone for good: an extension of the deadline to file for relocation and two weeks for Sacramento and Anaheim to continue to make their case. Why the extension? What is the reason for our hope? For starters, I think we should pinpoint the source of the extension. David Stern told the press that the extension was jointly proposed to him by the Maloofs, Clay Bennett (the Chairman of the Relocation Committee) and Glen Taylor (Wolves owner, current Chairman of the Board of Governors). If you've watched the video of the Maloof brothers being interviewed by a group of Sacramento media while attempting to sneak out of a side door and hurry into their getaway car, you are hopefully as sure as I am that the Maloofs did not request the extension, and in fact were a bit ruffled by the surprising turn of events. I think it's fairly sure that Clay Bennett, perhaps jointly with Glen Taylor as a representative of the larger Board of Governors, devised and suggested the deadline extension. What follows is my own take on why the extension, our hope, came about, and on what happens now.

Dan Morain: For Burkle, it's only business
A bit of background from the Bee on Burkules the Hero. Hopefully he'll have the chance to make the Maloofs an offer they can't refuse.
President/CEO of ICON/Venue Group to join Mayor at BoG meeting
This is somewhat encouraging, I think. At least Mr. Romani apparently has some good things to say on Sacramento's behalf at this point in the process. Go get 'em, boys.
Economist: Maloofs plan to keep sucking, but do so profitably.
Economics professor/author David Berri uses his poor understanding of professional sports to clumsily and absurdly explain why the Kings may be leaving Sacramento. I don't even think the salary numbers he uses are accurate (at least, they don't agree with ShamSports nor with common sense), and the Maloof/Sterling comparison sounds like something straight from the SacBee comments section. But, I suppose Huffington Post is a pretty big deal, and he does talk a bit about Here We Stay, so you all should probably read it anyways.
Baby, don't leave me.
This letter was sent to me by mistake; I found it quite interesting and thought I'd pass it along.

"The Kings organization spoke with David Taylor and will provide him with the studies, research and documents done during the course of the last 11 years on the feasibility of a new sports and entertainment facility. During that time, the organization has contributed several million dollars to pay for and support traffic and engineering studies, architectural plans and other studies as well as consultants, lawyers and architects. The organization will have no further public comment on the process at this time, and will continue to focus each day on improving the basketball team."

To D or not to D
A week ago, I put up a post suggesting that it may be time for the Kings to replace Beno in the starting lineup with someone that would be more focused on defense, leaving the Offense more fully in the hands of Tyreke Evans. I included a poll, in which most of you seemed to agree with that sentiment. Coach Westphal apparently read the post, voted "B" in the poll, and replaced Beno Udrih in the starting lineup with Luther Head that very night (as well as replacing Omri Casspi with Donte Greene). After three games with the new lineup, I think it's time to evaluate what exactly our tinkering hath wrought, and once again help the coach to decide what to do from here. After the jump, a deep statistical analysis of the Kings' performance on both sides of the court since the lineup change.

Sactown Royalty Saves the Kings
Our beloved Kings are broken. That much is clear. What isn’t clear is how they will be fixed, or who will be the one to mastermind the recovery. We can obviously no longer hold out hope that our GM or our Head Coach will provide any salvation. Geoff Petrie is quickly collapsing under the weight of his own genius, like Van Gogh, Hendrix, and Dave Chappelle, and has already completely lost touch with reality. Paul Westphal is so obsessed with his pure, straight hatred of Donte Greene, that he can hardly be counted on to eat, sleep, or bathe properly, let alone make strategic adjustments in-game and between games.
No, Kings fans; the task of fixing this team falls to us. It’s time to gather the collective might of Sactown Royalty in one place and solve this riddle once and for all. Let’s hash this out until we all unanimously agree on a single, simple answer, and someone will then deliver our wisdom to the team to execute our solution. (You, the stay-at-home dad that hasn’t played organized sports since freshman year of high school, why don’t you begin?) Don’t mind if I do.

Achieving Peace by Remembering the Past: The 2009 StR Draft Thread
I was making my plans on how to experience this year's draft, and I decided to find out approximately when the actual picks start being made by reviewing last year's draft thread. In addition to answering my initial question (it appears that the clock starts on the first pick at 4:30), it was fascinating and often hilarious reliving last year's draft through the eyes of StR (I missed the live thread last year). In a strange way, reviewing the roller coaster of anticipation, excitement, jubilation, horror, disbelief, skepticism, and various coping methods left me feeling even more excited for this year's draft but also less nervous. I've been telling myself that I'll be okay with whoever Geoff chooses, but I think this is the first time that I've actually felt it. I also plucked from this thread my new sig line, spoken by one great philosopher and retold by another.
AnotherStupid 2010 StR Draft Board
What’s that? You’d like to know the opinion of a guy who didn’t watch more than 2 minutes of college basketball this year and is basing his interpretations entirely on rumor, hearsay, and mix tapes? Happy to oblige!

If you haven't already watched this, do yourself a favor and watch it now. It's like looking into the face of God and hearing him say "You are my most wonderful creation". If you're wondering how it's Kings-related, wait for the surprise cameo at the end.
