F! to Seattle?
Maybe with Ollie for a certain injured pitcher? Maybe sweetener for a dump of Luis Castillo? Wow.
Not sure that I am digging Omar dealing with Jack Z, though. This could end badly.

If I Owned the Team for 5 Minutes
During a drunken mid-day voyage to a little sportsbar in downtown Scottsdale, AZ to watch today's game, a few friends and I were discussing what we would do if we could just run the show for 5 minutes. By our calculation, that would be enough time to eradicate some dead weight within the organization and get us on the correct path to again being a team that is worthy of being supported.
The changes that need to take place are wholesale, but do not seem very difficult to identify or perform. We limited ourselves to only 2 moves that would best set the franchise in the right direction (independant of changing ownership) so we had to prioritize. Everything else would just take the natural course decided by our wonderful ownership. Here is what I came up with:
1.) DFA Oliver Perez - Ollie is worthless. You know it. I know it. Scott Boras knows it deep down. I think even Ollie realizes it at this point. His refusal to accept a Minor League assignment while clearly not being able to pitch at the Major League level shows that not only is he a terrible pitcher, but he is also selfish. We discussed what we would do in this same situation given the fact that riding a bus for 5 hours to check in to a Days Inn is not the most pleasant way to spend an afternoon. We all said that we would accept the assignment and try to right the ship while giving the team the flexibility to bring up an arm that could potentially help. While contractually he has the right to do this (and I don't begrudge him that), it is clearly best for Ollie and not the team. When you are being paid $36 million, you expect a certain amount of buy in to the team concept from that individual and keeping him around really does send a poor message to the clubhouse. Ollie clearly does not care if he hurts his teammates or the organization and is probably angling for a release to start anew. Although it is a lot wasted money, the franchise should realize that it is already gone. With the way Jerry has run the bullpen ragged, we need another big league arm.
Corresponding Move - I would let Gee finish out the season in Buffalo and bring him up in September for a cup of coffee. Both Ramon Ortiz and Pat Misch are looking very good right now and could slot in to the rotation to give Tak a chance to solidify the bullpen. At this point, I'd give Ortiz a shot and counter with Misch if he is ineffective.
2.) Fire Omar Minaya - Omar's shortcomings are clearly on display recently with the lack of roster depth or a minor league system to feed major league ready players to the big club. His saving grace has been the ability to locate undervalued assets and turn them in to viable options on a decent team. In short, this is something that a scout could pretty much do. It takes a different breed to be able to run an organization and put together a complete roster and Omar has pretty much failed to make the necessary moves or identify potential shortcomings since 2007. His inability to see the long view has hampered this organization and backed it in to a corner too many times over the past 3 seasons. The team needs a General Manager who can develop the farm system with the limited assets allocated for it by ownership and has a clear plan for the future.
Corresponding Move - Since I only have about 30 seconds left in my ownership reign, we need to find a replacement that is not attached to some other team (so no wooing Jon Daniels or Andrew Friedman) and will actually take the job. John Ricco has been too closely involved with the construction of this team to be a viable option to bring about long-term change, so he is out. With a gun to my head, I go with Paul DePodesta and sign him to a 2-year deal to see what he can do. He has been out of the game for a bit, so he'll probably jump at the chance with a short-term deal to prove himself.
There are obviously many more things that would need to be done to get this franchise moving in the right direction (DFA Cora and Frenchy, fire Jerry) but with only 2 moves, you have to go big and there is a chance (albeit a small one) that these moves would be performed by ownership after the above two items were completed.
I think it is an interesting discussion point and wonder what everyone would do if they had ONLY 2 moves that they could make while trusting that the rest would fall in to place. I had a hard time believing that in those two moves, Jerry would survive, but taking the long-view, he is probably pretty far down on the list of issues facing this organization now that it has been pretty well determined that we are not contending this year.
If you had only 2 moves to make, what would you do?
David Wright's Career Is Over Unless He Becomes Fearless at the Plate
An entire article basically devoted to the notion that David Wright is afraid of the baseball. I live on the West Coast and usually watch games on GameDay so I don't have much of a frame of reference on the motif of the article. Has anyone noticed anything like this?
Give up 2 runs to the Mets, get sent to the bullpen
Carlos Zambrano moved to the bullpen after giving up 2 runs in 6 innings to make room for Yankee Legend Ted Lilly. It's a comforting feeling to see another team more screwed up than us.
Conflicting Reports on the state of the Mets Clubhouse from the same Media Outlet
ESPN reporting two entirely different things on players feelings regarding Jerry Manuel. This flies in the face of the Baseball Tonight Report that players were on the verge of a mutiny.
Remember this when we are watching K-Jake tonight
Carter 3-3, 4 RBI today
Single, Double, Triple. Needs an HR in his last at-bat for the cycle.
Nice Lineup tonight in Colorado
SS Reyes 2B Castillo 3B Wright LF Bay RF Francoeur 1B Tatis C Barajas CF Pagan P Maine
Harris was told to start taking fly balls as a member of the White Sox back in 2000, per the advice of his manager, Jerry Manuel - Gary Cohen on yesterday's broadcast.
Apparently, bunting was not the worst thing Jerry did yesterday. That's about 5 more losses we can chalk up to that crack talent evaluator.
Remembering Happier Times
I posted this on another thread. Probably the best video I've found of one of the best moments in Mets history. Watching it made me forget how far we've sunk, if only for a minute and fifty-seven seconds.
Watch it, remember where you were when it happened and try to forget every single Mets related thing that you remember that happened after it.
I suggest watching it with the sound off to ignore the douchnozzles and their "Fan Fest" commentating.
Even old people in homes make fun of the Mets
"One compelling offer comes from some seasoned Long Island baseball veterans, who are joining to produce a video on the fundamentals of baseball to help their hapless metropolitan team."
Throw in a "Baseball Management for Dummies" book for Jerry and the old fogies might have something.
More grission attacks by columnists who don't cover this team
"The Mets have talented players, but not necessarily winning players. Jose Reyes has a world of talent, but we’re hearing from Mets insiders that he’s not the type who’s going to get back on the field until he’s 100 percent. Same with Carlos Beltran."
Look at the bottom of page 3 and top of page 4. It gets worse.
Why MetsBlog Sucks
I found Amazin' Avenue a few months ago from a link from Metsblog.com. I would always be amazed at how "off" the information contained therein was (like the attached link saying that Jenrry Mejia is 'playing' in the Futures Game) and how the opinions reflected those of a 12 year old without basic logic from both the writers and site patrons.
I've read a few things lately that said that the discourse on MetsBlog was a bit more "inviting" during some of the more heated discussions (Church-Francine as an e.g.). I would attribute that to the fact that you cannot recieve the level of discourse (nor the level of correct information) there that would here.
It still amazes me how SNY could be affiliated with this product that truthfully is no better than any one of us could put out.
Anyone who could dutifully put this on a website, simply does not deserve to have one:
...love the deal…the Mets needed to shake up the roster… the potential francoeur has is much greater than that of church, plus the Mets lose nothing on the defensive side…
…welcome aboard, frenchy…
Ugh...
Thank god for Amazin' Avenue!
Mets sign Angel Berroa
More 'sprucing up the Bisons' moves. At least if Omar is focused on that, he can't ruin this team any more than he already has.
Phillies sign Pedro
Link en espanol...
Does this mean they are not after Halladay? If so, I don't even mind it. It's going to be a little awkward though.
I love Pedro, but hopefully the Phillies get a dose of what we recieved toward the end of his contract.
"What does it do if I use this?"
Jerry's "gut feelings" are crap. Murph and Reed showed the first signs of life for this team in a while and neither is in tonight's line-up.
In their stead, is Fernando Tatis...the same Tatis who has sucked this year and is hitting .071 (.071!!!) lifetime against Wolf in 28 at bats.
Against Left-handers in 2008 & 09 Murph is hitting .317/.348 (albeit in 42 limited at bats). Give the kid a chance to build on something.
Tatis isn't going anywhere for us and Murph could really use an opportunity to break out. Not giving it to him is abhorrent.
Halladay and Rios for the farm?
"If you were Halladay, would you approve a trade to a team that currently is without center fielder Carlos Beltran, shortstop Jose Reyes and first baseman Carlos Delgado? A team that hasn't exactly distinguished itself the past two Septembers?
To get Halladay, the Mets would need to empty their farm system of their top remaining prospects — outfielder Fernando Martinez, shortstop Wilmer Flores, right-hander Brad Holt"
Would you even fathom this? Would this make us legit contenders for the next 2 years? Can we continue to stand pat without me having a heart attack?
Mejia to DL
Hop in Jenrry, the water's warm...
Go get Matt Herges; DFA'd by Cleveland
If you are hesitant to make a trade, rummage the scrap heap to subsidize the roster. This would be a nice pickup for us.
Insert him where you were going to put Tim Redding and DFA him. We already have two long men who are pitching a heck of a lot better and this could keep Feliciano's arm from falling off.
$12 million, 4 innings at a time
Jerry says that Ollie and Redding may "split starts" with Redding going the first 5 and Ollie going the last 4.
I shall now bash my head against my desk until the word "Mets" is purged from my memory bank.
Yankees acquire Eric Hinske **Updated
For two nearly 24 year old A Ball players? Where were you on that one Omar?
Update: Um...what? We could have had him for nothing?
Link in thread below...
Some Mets are pleading for Omar to make a deal
Compare the 2nd paragraph to the last 2 paragraphs.
Who has better perspective, our manager or our 40 year old Left fielder?
Shocked? I'm not...
Tatis a double-play king in cleanup spot
Not really all that informative or telling us anything we didn't already know, but the title is hilarious. How many of the guys could have been the subject of this article?
(nearly any Met's name) a double-play king with bases loaded.
According to the Boston Globe, Washington could be a possibility, but don't count out the Mets. If Jerry Manuel fails to guide the Mets into the playoffs and ownership holds him responsible, even with the bevy of injuries, Valentine could have an in.
With all their question marks in the outfield, they need someone who can give Jerry Manuel more lineup flexibility. The perfect player for the Mets is Bergen Catholic product Mark DeRosa, whom the Cleveland Indians will begin shopping any day, if they haven't already. DeRosa, who can play first, second, third and the corner outfield positions, is a manager's dream (especially in these injury-plagued circumstances) and the kind of a player the Mets would want to re-sign for next year.
No matter what, Minaya is probably going to have to sacrifice a couple of second-tier prospects, like last year's No. 1 draft pick, power-hitting shortstop Reese Havens or righthander Jenry Mejia, both at Single-A St. Lucie, but it's something he has to do. The alternative is to raise the white flag to a fan base that was counting on games beyond September that they didn't get at Shea the last two years.
Hopefully Minaya doesn't read the Daily News.
What can Omar do to get us over the top?
I'm just praying he doesn't do anything stupid to give "Manuel in need of a Manual" any more options than he already has.
I would love a Starting Pitcher to purge Livan from the rotation (or at least, give Niese the chance to develop while getting the same results).
Who is out there than can help us?
Cliff Lee? Roy Oswalt? Carlos Lee?
I'm not finding a whole lot else out there, but hopefully when some teams fold tent for the season, there will be other options.
