So that's why the front of the Garden is so ugly...it was planned to have towers and a public concourse where the parking lot is now. Also, check out the very elaborate concept rendering that would have had the Garden looking more like the United Center than a big vault.

There's more Boston buildings throughout the thread: http://www.archboston.org/community/showthread.php?t=2256

Behold the 2013 AHL All-Star Game logo. Nautical. Also interesting is the use of the retro logo that Providence uses on their kick-ass alternate jersey, and not the outlined version that is their standard look. Could this mean they retro logo will be replacing their current primary?

Via The Fleer Sticker Project, an epically badass 1970's IHOP placemat. I would not have colored on this one had I been around then.

Lots of Bruins shout-outs, and hey, who's red-bearded mug is that on the YouTube video still?!?

Dw12-cale-speed

I saw someone on TrackForum had made a model of the DW12 with the wings moved to more traditional locations, and I had to give it a shot on a photo of the real car. I also mocked up an airbox-free version as well just for kicks. Just moving the rear wing up and back and the front wing back makes a big difference, no? And it could be done solely with aero kits...

Stanley Cup of Chowder Providence Field Trip - Dec. 18th

I'm not going to be able to make the Dec. 11th game so we'll make the P-Bruins group outing Dec. 18th.  Game starts at 4PM.  I'd like to get a preliminary head count by the end of the week so I can decide on how to get tickets - if the group is small enough (say six or so) I can use my own flex tickets, if it's larger I'd opt for either a new flex pack or group tickets which would be a cost of $14-20 per person.  Please let me know by Friday, Dec. 2nd so I can make arrangements.  Thanks!

Well, God bless Howard Baldwin. If nothing else, the man dreams big. What you see here (via the Hartford Courant) is the interior of a proposed $105 Million renovation to Hartford's XL Center, with the intention of scoring an NHL franchise by 2017. Ignoring the return of the Whalers for a second, from personal experiences at Monster Jam, the XL is well past due for a renovation to stay relevant, and this would be a welcome change. Bringing NHL hockey back is still a pipe dream, but doing it with a comparitively low-cost renovation to the existing building would make Baldwin a New England hockey hero.

Make sure you check out the gallery of the arena and planned adjoining plaza and full plan and cost breakdown.

Awesomeness from the Bruins here. This one will go up in price fast, but if you've got the funds do give it a go, it's for a great cause.

Stanley Cup of Chowder Cup of Chowder AHL Nights

It's about damn time we all got our sorry butts to some local minor league games.  The P-Bruins, Sharks, Monarchs, and to a lesser extent, Falcons, Whale, and Pirates are all within short drives of the Hub, and they're all way cheaper than a trip to das Garden.

It'll be good IMO to start with the P-Bruins and Sharks.  I have flex passes to the PBs, so I can help with things (or we can get 10 flex passes for $145 and just use them at one game), but for the Sharks we could either go with a group of 15 or more for $10 a ticket, or a AAA discount night for $15 tickets.  Providence plays Fridays (can't make) and Sundays, Worcester plays Saturdays, so that works well.

My initial thought for immediate games is either Sunday, Nov. 20th or Sunday Dec. 11th in Providence vs. the CT Whale and at 4:05 PM both times, and the AAA night at the Sharks (also vs. the Whale) at 7:30 PM on Saturday, Dec. 30th.

I'm happy to organize this so just let me know - who's in, and how do we want to go about acquiring tickets?

The Canadiens, acting on knowledge gathered this week about the Bruins, upgrade their equipment in advance of Thursday night's game.

Via Our New Fearless Leader at BostInnovation, the new banners for the first 5 Cups the Bruins won, now featuring the respective logos for each Championship year. Major upgrade, especially considering that the B's never won the Cup with the 1995-2007 logo the old banners featured.

Stanley Cup of Chowder So Crosby's a Ferrari, eh?

Ferrarif430italia_lead_medium

via www.blogcdn.com

So, if you believe Sidney Crosby's doctor, the Pens' star is a Ferrari.  Cool, I can kinda see that.   He's fast, (stick-) handles well, and generally carries d-bags (i.e. Matt Cooke).

But what of other NHL players?  What cars are they?  Sticking with purely automotive creations, I've compiled a bit of a list.  See if you agree:

Former Bruins draft pick and defenseman (1979-1982) Brad McCrimmon is head coach, and the roster includes former NHL players Josef Vasicek, Pavol Demitra, Karel Rachunek, Ruslan Salei, and Karlis Skrastins. A tremendously sad day - prayers go out to all the families. Simply terrible.

Can I call a jersey foul on this? NHL Shop is selling these, even though the alternate thankfully did not see ice time in the playoffs, let alone the Finals (teams choose 1 home and 1 away jersey for the postseason and stick with it). Buy one with Hnidy's number and nameplate and we're revoking your fanship.

It seems more like confirming what we all knew than actual news, but it doesn't mean it's any easier to take. Savvy is one of the key factor's in the Bruins' post-lockout resurgeance, and it's still strange to not see #91 out on the ice. Hopefully better days - and recovery - are ahead.

McQuaid may have a mullet, Timmy the stache, and Tuukka the swagger, but nobody, and I mean nobody, pulled it all together like Derek Sanderson. Someone else may be able to enlighten me on who the other two gentlemen are. From a Boston.com gallery of the coolest athletes in Boston history.

Kelly-shinoda

So, in case you weren't at the fantastic DVD viewing party tonight, then here is the major revelation: Chris Kelly looks like Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Check it out, it's a little creepy.

Identity-unveil-7-20_small_revised_july22_1-4170506139_slide

Yup, this is the actual Winnipeg Jets logo. The secondary and wordmarks are here. It's so heavy handed in it's simplicity that it looks like an Icethetics/Puck Drawn concept more than an actual NHL logo. I don't know that I hate it but it's not what I was expecting.

Nesn-showcar-2-512x340

Yes, son, that's a Bruins logo on a NASCAR Nationwide Series (think AHL) car. Boychuk at an IndyCar race, the B's in NASCAR...I just need the Bear on a Monster Truck for true hockey/racing nirvana. Image courtesy of NESN.

This is a much larger story about NESN and CSNNE's ongoing war, but one tidbit on the 3rd page says that we could be just weeks away from Tappen leaving Boston for the national stage. Initial thoughts: good for her and great for the NHL Network, since her tenor and delivery is exactly what they desperately need, but man, the local broadcast is going to take a hit.

From the playoff standpoint, it's identical to the NHL system save for the best of 5 opening round. The divisions themselves are largely self-explanatory, but you'd think they'd have switched Charlotte and Abbotsford. Interesting that NY teams are in 3 divisions among both conferences!

Stanley Cup of Chowder Does a banner year leave the Bruins with a banner conundrum?

So by this point, what with all the photoshops and jersey concepts and whatnot, you might have figured out that I am just ever so slightly fascinated with the aesthetics of hockey.  So, after the Bruins won the Cup, my mind got working on an issue that might not seem so critical, but I find interesting nonetheless:  What will the banner look like? That might not seem like a difficult question, but reviewing some history, it becomes apparent that the Bruins have some decisions to make.
