In case you missed it...
This video is almost certain to be taken down, so watch it while you still can.
The Goran Dragic Show, Part 1.
The Goran Dragic Show, Part 2.
Part 1 begins with Matt Bonner hitting that 3-pointer towards the end of the 3rd quarter, and the crowd erupts. Once the Suns bring it up the court, the Spurs don't find their defensive assignments properly. Tim Duncan takes his position on the weak side instead of getting his man, which we can assume is STAT. Instead, Bonner must guard Amar'e Stoudemire. Stoudemire sets a pick on Richard Jefferson, and Jefferson switches on to him. That leaves Stoudemire on the wing with a smaller, less explosive forward, and would have gotten the ball except that Dragic sees another mismatch... it's on him. Bonner switched on to him and now is trying to disrupt the pass to Stoudemire.
No respect for Goran Dragic. Bonner sagged so far off that he was begging for Dragic to take the shot. He did. The rest is history.
***One more thing - watch Dragic's interview with the experimental closed-captioning option on YouTube. The interview is on part 2.
Robin Lopez vs. Channing Frye
We all know what the pros and the cons are with each player, but let's have a quick (let me emphasize quick) review:
Robin Lopez
Pros
Very good presence around the rim - maybe not the best defender or offensive contributor, but having Brook Lopez as a twin and a competitor sure helped form his game. And let's not forget going against Shaq in practice last year, where he would complain about being too old to take Robin's abuse. And apparently, he's got transition D.
Gets his looks - when you play with a two-time MVP, you will get your looks... and he converts them. His are in the paint, where the Suns sometimes struggle.
Cons
Foul trouble - not so much the case as of late, but he'll foul himself right out of the gate. It's almost astonishing, it's like one second Robin is the most focused person on the court, and then the next second he's on the bench.
Non-existent perimeter presence - you think Robin will ever make... wait, even try a three? He's smarter than that.
Free throws - he has got to convert these. He's going to find himself on the line a lot during his career, he should take a lesson from "Shaqovic" and make his free throws.
Channing Frye
Pros
He has roots - He played at St. Mary's... he's a homegrown talent.
Shoots 3's like a cyborg - what kind of robot goes 7-10 behind the arc off the bench? He will create some match-up problems if the other team doesn't put a man on him.
Cons
Defense - just in general. Sure, he will block shots and make steals and deflect passes, but anybody who watches the Suns will know the frustration. Ticky-tack fouls, blow-bys, missed assignments, Frye brings it all.
Size - Frye against Dwight... Frye against Bynum... Frye against Duncan... Frye against Kaman... Frye against Nene... Frye against Shaq... Frye against _________________.
I have more to say about about Robin Lopez, which should hint at my bias.
What else am I forgetting?
What Steve Kerr should learn from Greg Oden and the Blazers
Greg Oden fractured his kneecap last night contesting a layup from Aaron Brooks. If you did not already know this, that rock you live under must be nice and cozy.
People, this injury could have been prevented. Everybody seems to forget that this is the same knee that had the bone chip last season. Instead of getting the surgery, the Trailblazers simply let him rest until the swelling went down. They rushed him. They didn't take the necessary steps to ensure their center's future.
Now they have to shoulder the burden.
Why Steve Kerr should care: Barbosa. His ankle should not be rushed, no matter how desperately we need him (and we do.) When you rush the recovery, the injury becomes aggravated, and then you take two steps back. Look at Manu Ginobili; he should have rested more last season, but instead of focusing on his recovery he hit the court. BAM! Stress fracture. If Barbosa is going to be on our roster, we need him healthy and we need him strong. The games he misses before he gets back out there are going to be fewer than the games he will miss if he aggravates the ankle.
Why Steve Kerr should ALREADY KNOW THIS: Stoudemire. He quit using the protective goggles after his torn iris healed last season. He said the goggles would fog up and limit his vision. In his defense, I would not want to play every game for the rest of my life wearing a pair of those. That would just flat piss me off. However, against his better judgment, he quit wearing them. The result? A partially torn retina. What would last season have been like if the Suns had forced Stoudemire to wear those goggles?
Sometimes things like that have to happen to appreciate how fragile health can be. The thing is, it has already happened. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.
