Quick hitters: Inside knowledge
I have a source, but you can take this with a grain of salt. The guy has been legit most of the time, but has also been completely wrong. Here are some things I have heard.
Pat White is very high on our list. We WILL BE implementing the Wildcat formation this off-season and our coaches really want White to run it. With the release of Sage we are going to be signing a VET. and drafting a rookie QB PLUS we are going to let Alex Brink fight it out for the back-up role. This plan would also mean a pick spent on White and a "real" qb.
Derrick Ward and Ruben Droughens are the two most talked about VET running backs being brought in. Antonio Smith is very high on our radar and look for us to be interviewing him rather quickly after FA starts.
Again this could all be legit or he could have missed by a mile. I trust the guy and I plan on reporting everything I hear even if he is wrong. If nothing else it sparks conversation.
Options with Robinson
I called it yesterday, didn't I? This is going to slowly unravel and blow up in our face. Now what are the choices with Dunta?
1) Let him play through the tag and then we can try to negotiate a long-term deal after the 2009 season.
2) Try to trade him before this years draft. This is where we will get the most back from Dunta. No one will sign him giving us 2 1st rounders, but we could get possibly get a 2nd and more.
Both options are hard to pick from. If he plays out the tag there is no gurantee he re-signs with us. If we trade him now this could affect the opinions of some of our other players. I am telling you all now that this needs to be handled carefully and with deep thought. There is rumblings within the team now about the dislike for Rick Smith. I hope this Dunta situation does not bring out more negativity from our players.
Did we just shoot ourselves in the foot?
I am having mixed emotions on this Dunta situation. On one hand we kept our only good corner, but on the other hand is he worth 10 million dollars? He never was a shut-down type of player, but he was above-average. To me Dunta would make the perfect number 2 corner and this is supported by the fact that his best season was as a rookie playing number 2 to Aaron Glenn. Here is some food for thought...
With the tagging of Dunta comes some major headaches down the road. One: If he has a good season he will drive his own price up even more. If we did not want to pay top dollar now what will change our minds next season? Second major problem is guys like Ryans, Daniels, Walter and Rosenfails will have to be signed long-term next season. We will again have cap issues and this will further damper our chances at signing Mario, Okoye and Slaton.
Now some will say he may not be the best corner, but he is our "leader" and we play better with him. Well if that was the case than why did we play better in 2007 after he went down? It seems to me that we are a 2nd half team regardless if Dunta is on the field or not.
I am not saying I do not like Dunta, but I think we are giving all the leverage to Robinson and this very well could burn us. With questions of cornerback and the stability of the position do we have to take this into account during the draft this season? The problem with that becomes the amount of money that would essentially be dumped into the position. Either way we are in a mess that will not be sorted out anytime soon.
Texans at the combine
Finally the off-season has a purpose. The Franchise tag period is almost over and the combine is near. The college players have spent their whole lives waiting for this week and have been preparing like crazy. Their life hangs in the balance of 40 times, weight lifting and interviews. Every team will be there with scouts, coaches and doctors. The interview process is nerve racking and hectic, but necessary. What can Texan fans expect?
Last season was filled with all sorts of emotions including anger and relief. The team played inconsistent, but brilliant at the same time. An unexpected offense ranked in the top 5, but failed to be a top scoring offense. The defense was, well, pitiful to be honest. The secondary still has holes and the front 7 was under achieving. The team has holes that need to be filled, but where do they start?
The top 3 priorities have to be DE, SS and SLB. Each need brings its own importance to the team. Mario is a beast, but is alone at DE. Okoye regressed last year and I hope it was just a sophomore slump. Weaver is an overpaid DE that brings nothing to the d-line. With Kollar being the new d-line coach Okoye should become a better player and the scheme will be changed to fit their styles. The read and react scheme under Richard Smith did not play to any of our players skill set and it showed. There are not any DE's that can be had for a fair price in free agency so this should be filled in the draft and it should be done quite early. Guys to keep your eye on include Brian Orakpo, Everette Brown, Michael Johnson, Paul Kruger and Robert Ayers. Brown and Orakpo may not be there at 15 and if they are there is no guarantee Gary and company will think they can play DE in the 4-3. Pay attention to these guys at the combine.
SS is a major need and since our inception we have never had that play-maker at safety. With guys like Taylor Mays and Myron Rolle opting to not enter the combine this season the safety position has dropped in talent. William Moore's bad showing at senior bowl week has hurt his stock greatly and unless he has a stellar combine he could very well fall out of round 1. Guys to keep an eye on would include William Moore, Patrick Chung, Michael Hamlin and Louis Delmas. My sleeper pick here would be Otis Wiley. I really like this guy and he has quietly had a great run at Michigan St. I would be surprised if we take a safety in round 1 and maybe even in round 2. Still guys like Delmas and Chung could sneak up the board and land in Houston at 15.
SLB is another need that many would choose to ignore still. Xavier Adibi and Zac Diles are both very good lb's but both are coming off injury seasons and both are undersized. They would both benefit the most from playing WLB and this means SLB has no real starter. The importance of SLB is very high. This LB normally covers the TE's and Rb's, something we always seem to lack to remember. I am not very high on anyone, but there is rising talk about drafting one in round 1. Guys to keep in mind would be Brian Cushing, Clint Sintim, Marcus Freeman and Tyrone Mckenzie. I am not a fan of Cushing, but he seems to be growing on a lot of fans I know. Look for this to be addressed within the first 3 rounds on draft weekend.
One thing to keep in mind regarding the draft and our Texans is nothing is what it seems on draft day. We have the knack for reaching on players early, but making the decision turn out in our favor. Another thing to remember is trading down and drafting anyone would not be out of the question. Our team is tricky in round 1, but they always seem to find the players that fit our style the best. This shouldn't change this season and hopefully with a good free agency playoffs in 2009 are not out of the question!!!!!!
