NY Islander fan since 1976 when I saw Denis score against LA in the Forum while I was in the US Navy. Who would have thought we would have been able to draft El Nino AND Kirill the Krazy!!! Let's restart the Drive for Five!!! Currently living in NW BC AKA Luongoland. Damn you, Mad Mike!!!

Canada in (Hockey) Crisis...but Garth's Rebuild Keeps Chugging Along

Editor's Note: BC checks in with a WJC recap -- and draft implications, of course. Much more after the jump/poll if you're viewing this on the LHH home page. Has any nation's identity ever been so...

Stevie Y Should Know Better Than This

Wonder if anyone has told Roli that Stevie's just signed his bad luck charm? By the way, Roli has been fine through two.

If DiPietro's injury develops into something serious, the Islanders do have an attractive option. Although it is believed that Snow had no intention of claiming Flyers goalie Michael Leighton - placed on waivers Monday - that stance may have changed once DiPietro left the game. Leighton, who helped lead the Flyers to their Stanley Cup run last season, is signed through 2012 at $1.55 million per year.

Highlights of Canada-USA game. Starting at 5:42 is play where Brock Nelson gets run into the Canadian bench and stuffed down for good measure. Thought originally that it was Casey Cizikas and Zack Kassian, but it was Marcus Foligno and Kassian.

Preliminary WJC Analysis

We still have the USA-Sweden and Canada-Russia tilts to go, but I feel safe in saying the following: Casey Cizikas has been the best of the four Islander prospects in the tourney. Not that NN,...

Why Not Draft Conz?

A question for Ben Hasna maybe. I am sure that he'd love to be on a team that had Mark and Nino.

A Blast from the Islander Past Sinks Messier

Hope he didn't cry. As the Islander rebuild progresses, good to see the highest paid forward on our payroll doing something useful!!!

AFTER 40 MINUTES CANADA-SWEDEN

Some shoddy goalltending and no one really dominating for either team. 4-4 after 40 minutes. Couturier made a spectacular play scoring the first goal less than a minute in. He made what looked like...

AFTER 40 MINUTES CZECH REPUBLIC-SWEDEN

The bad news for Sweden is that Gabriel Landeskog is likely gone for the WJCs and certainly for tomorrow's tilt with Canada. The good news is that they can win without him. They had a very...

Jaden Schwartz out for the tourney and more with fractured ankle

7

As if the Schwartz family didn't have enough bad news. Jaden will not only miss the rest of the tourney but likely much if not all of the rest of the junior season. Good news is that Calvin De Haan should be good to go tomorrow against Sweden.

A Scout Looks at the WJCs

He has the advantage of being there and being able to focus more on indivual players. His line on Couturier is essentially the same as mine on Larsson: a player quietly demonstrating his skills. Be interested to see his take on Larsson.

The WJCs After Four Days

Another game, another five point night for Kings' prospect Brayden Schenn (yawn)! 4-1-5 against Norway a night after going 1-4-5 against the Czechs. In fact, he fits the pattern so far. The really...

After 40 Minutes, Russia-Sweden

Players are dropping like flies at this WJC. Morin, Nelson, Schwartz, De Haan, and now Landeskog. Apparently he injured his ankle in his last junior game before the break and aggravated it against...

Will use the other thread for the CDH injury story. Casey almost went from hero to goat today. Was called for unnecessary penalties twice in the first period. Could have been called for a double...

De Haan Injury?

CDH was crushed into the boards in the early second period. Had difficulty getting up and elimping off the ice. Apparently a left knee injury. He is being taken to the locker room now and was...

Couldn't get this to play on my mother-in-law's dial-up connection, but I think this is Casey Cizikas' moment. TSN analysts credit this effort with turning the game around. Russia was already up 1-0 and had the better of play. If they had scored on this PP, it might have led to a Russian win. This got not only the crowd, but Casey's teammates into the game in a big way.

AFTER 40 MINUTES, US-FINLAND

Some of you may remember me pushing Teemu Pulkinnen at one point for an Islander draft pick. The irony is that Garth could have picked him as well as Nino and Kirilll. He eventually went in the...

Ten Reasons for Islander Fans to be Thankful This Holiday Season

+

Of course, there are many others. I just chose to limit it to ten. Feel free to add your own either here or in the BR piece comments section. Wanted to do an item on Anders Lee, but BR had no file pics of him. Also was frustrated by the lack of Calvin De Haan anecdotes on the web.

Pray for Mandi

Tough news. Doesn't look good for her. At one point, my oncologist was discussing a bone marrow transplant for me. Thank God I didn't need it. To go through something so gruesome and then have it ultimately fail...and I bet you this new drug she is taking is probably as bad as the disease itself. Keep a good thought.

Consider that, if the Islanders aren't in playoff contention next season and are willing to offer Wisniewski around the league at the trade deadline, there is no doubt that they would be able to get more than a third-round pick in return, which makes it all the more surprising that Anaheim couldn't get more now.

http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/scott_cullen/?id=329072 My guess is that Wiz will be moved at some point before the deadline and that the payback will be MUCH bigger than a third rounder. Cullen was quite prescient.

Kirill the Krazy Gets Some Good Press

7

Feel good story about his visit to a local Head Start program. Kabanov returned to action last night against the PEI Rocket after missing nearly two weeks due to an undisclosed injury. He was held off the scoresheet in a wild 6-5 MAINEiac win that saw both starting goalies get pulled.

Ottawa Senators forward Alex Kovalev has more career points than Rocket Richard. Which guy would you want in a Game 7? Only 10 European-born players have ever had more points than Kovalev, but, as Senators coach Cory Clouston readily admits, "you never know which player you’re going to get."

Roloson on the move? Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, who keeps preaching patience, is willing to keep his two average goalies Mike Smith and Dan Ellis — at least for now. But don’t be surprised if he looks at New York Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson at the trade deadline. Roli’s $2.5-million US contract runs out July 1, so he would be a cheap pickup. Florida Panthers netminder Tomas Vokoun would be a better choice, but he’s twice as expensive and the Panthers and Lightning play in the same division. Yzerman could always sign Vokoun in the summer. The Lightning have been through 14 goalies since Nikolai Khabibulin departed after their Stanley Cup victory in 2004. They got Smith as the centrepiece in the Brad Richards trade to the Dallas Stars.

Local product Jared Spurgeon, 21, is proving his smarts are more important than his size (five-foot-nine, 185 pounds), playing on the Minnesota Wild blue-line after a sparkling career with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs. "He walks through the dressing room and looks 12, but he carries himself well on the ice," said assistant GM Brent Flahr.
