Georgia NG Kwame Geathers, SS Shawn Williams and Vandy player get half-game suspensions

So Sayeth Silve: Upon review of game tapes of the football game between the University of Georgia and Vanderbilt University, played in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has announced that Vanderbilt sophomore center Logan Stewart, Georgia sophomore defensive lineman Kwame Geathers and Georgia junior defensive back Shawn Williams have been suspended for the first half of their team’s next football games. Vanderbilt hosts Army this Saturday while Georgia plays Florida in Jacksonville on Oct. 29. Geathers action was in violation of NCAA Football Rule 2-32-1-a for fighting. By NCAA Football Rule 9-5-1-b, the penalty for violation of the rule in the second half includes suspension for the first half of the team’s next scheduled game. On the same play, Stewart’s suspension is the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 13:09 mark in the fourth quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which states that a flagrant personal foul offender shall be disqualified. Williams’ suspension is the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 2:08 mark in the third quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1-4 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which reads, "No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder." This action is taken in accordance with Southeastern Conference Constitution, Article 4.4.2 (d), which states that a student-athlete may be suspended if it is determined that the student-athlete has committed a flagrant or unsportsmanlike act.

8. In all likelihood, the team will not head to the pool at the Ramsey Center this fall camp. "I doubt we go to Ramsey," Richt said. "This might be the first time that we’ve gotten all 29 practice opportunities in. We haven’t gotten there yet, but we’re on track."

http://georgia.scout.com/2/1098366.html I never blamed "pool day" for the poor effort in the past. It was neat the first time the team did it, but in my opinion, it became something the players expected. It also took away from the already limited practice time the team had. I do think that this is another "we're taking things more seriously now" move on Coach Richt's part.

You've got to prove what your name is....this is Georgia.

Columbus Park and Rec scandal to impact Jarvis Jones?

Columbus police interviews conducted during an investigation of the Parks and Recreation Department reveal that director Tony Adams and top lieutenant Herman Porter may have jeopardized the amateur status of two University of Georgia athletes who played on the Georgia Blazers, their city-funded, Nike-sponsored AAU basketball team. Police records show that an unauthorized bank account controlled by Adams and Porter was used to pay for flights to and from Los Angeles for Jarvis Jones, a two-sport star at Carver High School who played football for one season at the University of Southern California, and for the cell phone bill of the mother of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a five-star shooting guard from Greenville High School

UGA eases North Campus tailgating restrictions

Fans this football season will be allowed to bring tables up to 6 feet long, to begin tailgating five hours before kickoff and can now bring tents to North Campus. Last year, tables were restricted to 4 feet in length, four hours before kickoff was the time limit and tents were not allowed at all.

UGA reports recruiting violation with Crowell

"{Crowell] was on campus for his official visit January 21-23, 2011. On Sunday, January 23, 2011, head coach Mark Richt and the football staff arranged for the offensive linemen, wide receivers, fullback and quarterback to gather during [Crowell's] official visit exit meeting in the indoor practice facility that Coach Richt’s office overlooks. The current student-athletes walked into the practice facility and were dressed in their game-day uniform tops only and looked up toward Coach Richt’s office. "Coach Richt [Crowell] and [Crowell's] family left his office to join the group. By the time [Crowell] made his way to the field, the team was in an offensive alignment without a running back. [Crowell] was subsequently handed a jersey and stood in the vacant running back position created by the team. . . . Afer [Crowell] stood in the position, the student-athletes broke from the alignment and talked to him. The activity lasted less than five minutes." Richt "has reported that the idea was to create a feeling for [Crowell] that he was needed at the running back position that was left empty by the team," McGarity wrote in the letter to the NCAA. According to the letter, Richt knew it would be against NCAA rules to use equipment or run a play involving a recruit, but did not know the limited Jan. 23 activity was against the rules. The SEC subsequently informed Georgia that the incident constituted a violation of the NCAA rule against "game day simulation" for prospects. Georgia asked the NCAA to consider the violation secondary in nature. Secondary violations are considered inadvertent, resulting in no significant recruiting advantage. "UGA does not believe a recruiting advantage was gained as [Crowell's] mother has stated that her son knew he was going to attend UGA since he was a young child," McGarity wrote No word about the puppy......

How Big a Difference Did Todd Grantham Make?

Year 2 at Team Speed Kills disagrees with Matt Hinton's assessment of the improvement made by Coach GrAnThAm this year. In a year when offensive production was up, UGA's defense was better. Certainly better than the 2008 and 2009 versions of third-and Willie.

Strength program changes coming at Georgia

From Weiszer: Responding to questions this afternoon about changes to the football strength and conditioning program, Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton sent an e-mail to media members indicating that changes are coming. "I can tell you there is some administrative re-organization coming in the football program," Felton wrote. "I should have more info later today so stay tuned." Dave Van Halanger has been Georgia’s strength and conditioning coach for all 10 years under Mark Richt. Former Georgia safety Kelin Johnson, who is still close to the program and works out some with the team, posted on his Twitter account this afternoon about Van Halanger. "Coach Van..You will be missed so much! Thank you for all you have done for me and my fellow teammates! We Love you!" I spoke to one source connected to the program about if Van Halanger was leaving his position and was told: "That’s the word on the street."
