Minor League Ball BASEBALL BRAIN CHALLENGE #1

Which current major leaguer would make the best starship captain and why?  Which starship captain would make the best major league player?

What position would each of the starship captains play, and what stats do you think they'd post?

You may select captains from Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly, etc. etc.

I have plenty more questions with important implications, but these will have to do for today.

Minor League Ball Fautino De Los Santos

Does anyone know what kind of stuff this guy has?  His #'s are sure eye-popping.

I also found this filler ode to Fautino:

Fautino, Fautino, you are the bomb
You pitch fastballs with such aplomb
But what will happen when you get to AA?
Only an expert could possibly say.
You are one of the only hopes for the Sox's farm
Hence in south Chicago, there is much alarm.

Minor League Ball GBL opening

The Global Baseball League, a long running league, now in its 11th year, is in need of a manager.

The league has 144 game seasons, 8 playoff teams out of 24.  AL has DH, NL does not, and we use the Diamond Mind simulation - the real life results disk, not the projections.

The team in question is the Lisbon Navigators, one of the best franchises in the league.  I will be quite picky about filling this team.  It features studs such as Cain, Zambrano, and Chris Young in the rotation, and Beltran, Adrian Gonzalez, and Garrett Atkins in the lineup.  Some good prospects too, such as Votto and Adam Jones.

Minor League Ball Baseball Prospect Book 2007

John,
I got the book already - apparently the Pony Express between KS and MN is quite fast!   Great publisher...keep using 'em.  Paper quality is great, and the book seems very physically solid this year compared to years past.  I love it!  Thanks for the hard work!

I also love the portrait of yourself.  I'm envious and wish I could be as thin yas you!!  Well, maybe not quite that thin....  ;-)

Minor League Ball Sim league openings

The Global Baseball League, a well established Diamond Mind league going into its 11th year, has three openings.    This is a 24 team league, playing a 144 game season.  There are 12 teams in both the AL and the NL.  Four teams, two division winners, and two wildcards, make the playoffs in each league.

We use the previous years stats, not the projection disk.  We have not started our rookie draft yet, so it is a good time to get into the league.

Interesting that Ian Stewart seems to finish in about 4th or 5th place no matter how many rounds he is in.  Now I'll mix in some of the next wave who did well (though I suspect there was some ballot box stuffing for Patton - when I left work, he was almost in last place, and when I checked at home 2 hours later he was easily in 1st) as well as Rowell (who I thought was already on the list) and Morales (who I forgot).  I'll put Patton on the poll next time around.

I'm going to try out some new names on the poll this time to see how much support they garner.  I haven't written off Danks, Salty, Iannetta, etc. but I think it is obvious they will not win this round, so let's see who else might garner support in the 41-50 range.  Added for the first time are Chuck Lofgren (who no one mentions but I think should have been on already), Travis Snider, Travis Buck, and Joel Guzman.

Looks like Erbe has #39 wrapped up with a 6% lead.  We'll bid adieu this time to Salty, Kouz, and give shots to Morales, Danks, and Slowey.

It might be about time to run some parallel polls  to see who should be next on the poll.  Guys like Salty, Iannetta, Morales, Danks seem to do OK, and will probably be in the next 10, but we need to sort it out a bit more.

Barton was a surprise winner, as he is not even OAK's #1 prospect according to BB America, plus he did not even make the top four last time, I don't believe.

Iannetta and Sweeney have to sit this one out, while Pie, Philip Humber, and Kouzmanoff get a try.

Minor League Ball Question for John

John,

Are you reviewing recent international signees such as Angel Villalona (SF) or Jesus Montero (NYY)?

Just wondering because they both got $2 mil or more in bonuses, yet they did not show up in the top 20's for their respective teams.

Especially for SF, in a pretty weak system, it's hard to figure out how a $2m+ signee would not make the top 20.

Minor League Ball Community Prospect List - Who's Got Next?

Here's a tester on 10 prospects to see who deserves to be on the list as others come off...please suggest others also.

Others who I considered were Micah Owings, Trevor Crowe, Hurley, Volquez, Braun, McCutchen, and Lind, but there are only so many spots on the poll.

This ought to be interesting.

  26. Humberto Sanchez

It seemed pretty clear that Sanchez was going to win this one.  Brickhaus invited someone to kick off the next one, so I'm doing so.  I think 180 votes is sufficient since Sanchez has a big lead.

Brignac, Loney, and Gio Gonzalez come off this time in favor of Rasmus, Clement, and Pedroia.  I may run another poll with some names to come onto the list next.

Minor League Ball Who is Terry Evans?

Who is Terry Evans?    His career highs in HR and SB before this year were 13 and 17 respectively.  His career batting line was 239/303/394 in the low minors.

This year has been a LOT different.  He started off the league in the FSL, and clubbed 15 HR in the heavy Florida air along with 21 SB(only 1 CS).  His SLG was 2nd in the league at the time of his promotion to AA about a month ago.

Since reaching AA and the milder climates of Missouri/Arkansas, he has upped his SLG to 697 with 11 HR in a month (27 games).  He has also stolen 7 more bags, with one more CS.  He's hit above .300 at every stop.

Dude is 24, so we're not talking about Hank Aaron or Willie Mays here, but geez, this is something.  He does seem to lack plate discipline with only 23 BB to 80 K, but that hasn't seemed to slow him down so far.

Overall he leads the minor leagues with 26 HR and has 28 SB to go along with it.

Minor League Ball Jon Lester's take on Delmon Young

Interesting - here is Jon Lester's take on Delmon (he was the pitcher at the time):  "Not exactly sure what happened with Delmon. All I know is he got tossed and didn't really like it so he turned around and tossed the bat. I don't think he meant to hit the ump, but the bat stuck to his hand a little long, maybe because of the pine tar or something--and it ended up hitting him."

Minor League Ball DMB League opening

The Global Baseball League, about to start its 10th year, has one opening.  There's no way to really sugarcoat it - this is a franchise in need of a lot of TLC.  However, there are some assets to make a prospect maven happy, such as Victor Martinez, Howie Kendrick, Ian Kinsler, Carlos Quentin, Brandon McCarthy, Jeff Francis, Oliver Perez, Bobby Jenks, Joey Devine, Chuck James, and Carlos Gonzales.

There are also some old stalwarts such as Cliff Floyd, Brady Clark, Kenny Rogers, and Todd Jones.

The team plays in the AL, which has a DH.  There are 24 teams in the league.  Contact me for more information...

Minor League Ball DMB League Openings

I'm the commish of a DMB league called the Global Baseball League.  We have two openings in the NL (no DH).  We're a 24 team league playing 144 game seasons, going into our 10th year.

Our rookie draft is February 19th, so this is a perfect time to get in on it!  One open team has been a playoff team for the last 2 years, while the other has more problems, but still some very good pieces.

Contact me at davidwmueller@hotmail.com or reply to this message with your E-mail and I'll send you the team rosters and our league Consitution.
