California Golden Blogs Cal Conquers Texas, Part II

[Twist Note:  I moved this to the top of the page, so we can bask in its awesomeness all day long before the game starts tonight.  Many thanks to Beastmode and GO BEARS!]

Work and rain be dammed, we showed up to Reckling Park on Monday at 6:00pm knowing full well there would be a rain delay. We didn’t care. When would we get this opportunity again?

I was a bit concerned to see Baylor so loose during the rain delay whereas Cal hung out mostly in the dugout. There would be no jousting, unfortunately.

California Golden Blogs Cal Conquers Texas, Part I

I fell in love with Cal Baseball last weekend.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been to Evans Diamond and enjoyed the experience, however quaint. And, I’ve always appreciated Cal Baseball’s existence and its history. But, I didn’t tailgate before Cal Baseball games. I didn’t order a special television package to watch the team while living 2,000 miles away. I’ve never stormed the field like I have at a football game or a court like a basketball game.

That all changed with Cal’s dramatic ninth inning comeback in the Houston Regional of the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.
And, I don’t really care if anyone calls me a bandwagon fan or if they tell me I never paid serious attention until the program was on life support. Both statements are true, so what?

Monday night, my wife and I were on our feet for the entire ninth inning with two or three-dozen other Cal fans, mostly family and friends of the players. We yelled and clapped and paced like it was Big Game. Our hearts were palpitating with every pitch.

The best part of it all was that it was so unexpected.

Interesting Excerpt:

You've got a pretty healthy quarterback competition going on. What did you tell those two going in about how the competition would be handled and what you needed to see from the guy who was going to win the job?

FC: First off, it was a great spring for me and the quarterbacks. Nate [Longshore] only practiced the first week [until he injured a pectoral muscle] but I was very impressed with not only his performance but his leadership, his command of the offense and his command of the huddle. Kevin Riley, I was also impressed with. He went through the whole spring and did a very good job in his decision-making. He completes the football and can make things happen with his feet. Both Nate and Kevin know it's a healthy situation; it's a competitive situation. What I communicated to them, as I have to any of the quarterbacks I've had in the past when there's a competition, is the starting quarterback, it comes down to, one, who can lead the team, who can command the huddle, who can make the best decisions. And then who can complete the football and minimize turnovers.

At the end of spring, did you have one ahead of the other?

FC: Absolutely not. Nate had such a good first week of practice that there was no doubt in my mind that, after we were told he'd miss the rest of spring, that he'd at least be part of a competition, if not the starter.

You know, if you read the new Pac-10 blog, you'd think Cal has gone 26-50 in the last six seasons under Tedford as opposed to the converse. Yes, the Furd upset Tedford last year, but does anyone seriously think Furd is going to catch Cal as long as Cal is committed to football? Ted Miller asked Tom Luginbill, ESPN recruiting expert, the following:

TM: You mentioned before Stanford doing a good job recruiting. Is Stanford challenging California in the Bay Area, or is it taking a national focus as it has in the past?

As far as I know, Cal locks the Yay down, at least from Stanfurd. That said, they really don't compete that much with one another. Cal competes with UCLA, Oregon, ASU and to some extent SC. I think ted Miller has been hanging with Ivan Maisel too much.
