Time To Give Randy Wells His Due

After ten starts, 63 innings pitched, 49 hits allowed, 14 walks, an ERA of 2.43, a WHIP that was 1.09 before today's game, I think it is time to say out loud that Randy Wells could very well be like found money for the Cubs. He's only 26, but it would appear he learned a lot by watching spending all those years in the minor leagues. He doesn't rattle, he doesn't throw at batters when he gets upset, hell, when does he get upset? Since he was called up, has there been a more reliable starting pitcher on the team?

He has shown he can pitch out of jams, he listens to his catcher and coaches, he trusts his fielders, and his low walk total shows he knows how to throw strikes. If the Cubs only get one representative to the All Star Game this year (and what a come down after last year's eight), it isn't unreasonable to suggest Randy Wells deserves at least some consideration. In a year of one mess after another, he's been a real nice story.

This weekend on local WGN they're going to be showing the Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp special. According to the listings, it is on Saturday 3/14 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday 3/15 at 10:30 p.m. It runs 30 minutes. Since this is a local Chicago showing which I don't get here in L.A., plus I'll be in Mesa this weekend anyway, I would very much appreciate it if some kind soul here could see their way to recording in somehow. My e-mail is beercubbie@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance.

McCourt Really Fed Up With Ramirez?

McCourt Really Fed Up With Ramirez?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jon_heyman/03/02/manny.dodgers/index.html?eref=T1&bcnn=yes

I know there was a previous Ramirez thread, but it's fallen down into the abyss. Jon Heyman, normally Boras' mouthpiece, reports that McCourt might be fed up (read done) with all things Manny. While Torre and Colletti plead with him otherwise, McCourt is known around LA for being emotional and well, vindictive. if McCourt's petulance prevails, Ramirez actually just might find himself without a team, since apparently not even the Giants have the resources to spite the Dodgers.

McCourt had a good point in an LA Times article this weekend. He offered Ramirez arbitration and was turned down. Any arb decision can't contain deferred money, so it isn't as if McCourt wasn't prepared to pay him in full. Plus, what McCourt left unspoken was that Boras blew a chance to submit an outrageous arb number that he stood a good chance of winning. While McCourt's an ass, there's still a lot of sentiment here in LA that Ramirez and his agent can just take a hike.

For those that are interested, Warren Wimmer, one of the camp photographers, has put up 1000's of photos taken the week of camp. There are many pictures of former Cubs like Kessinger and Beckert along with us old camper guys too.
