Poison: An Attitude Rant

There's been complaining from fans about Barry Robson's complaining on the field. What does it all amount to? A distracting argument surrounding a team that just can't win.

Post-Mortem: Canadian Women Eliminated in Group Stage at U-20 World Cup

What went wrong for Canada's women at this month's U-20 World Cup in Japan?

Save the Minnesota Stars

The NASL's Minnesota Stars are in trouble and deserve our support.

Gershon Koffie Suspended for Saturday Against Portland

For the second straight week Major League Soccer has suspended a Whitecap on review, ruling Gershon Koffie out of Saturday's match for a yellow-card offense against Seattle.

Will the Whitecaps Make the Playoffs? (Yes.)

Fans are worried after two straight losses: will the Vancouver Whitecaps miss the playoffs? Answer: almost certainly no.

Whitecaps Game Day: Men @ Seattle, 1 PM PDT

The Vancouver Whitecaps, battered and suspended all over the place, are going to face a hell of a job against the healthy home-field Sounders.

Barry Robson Suspended for Seattle Hours Before Kickoff

Major League Soccer's decision to suspend Barry Robson mere hours before the biggest match of the season reaches new lows in league incompetence.

Whitecaps International Round-Up

How did the five Vancouver Whitecaps internationals do in the August friendlies? We have the answer.

That Vancouver - Dallas Game Sucked and I Hated It

The Vancouver Whitecaps - FC Dallas game wasn't just a loss. It was sloppy, dull, chippy, divey, dull, incompetent, and dull.

Whitecaps Game Day: Men v. Dallas, 7 PM

The Vancouver Whitecaps take on FC Dallas in a half-important anti-climax of a game with both teams running without much of their lineup. Fun!

If you missed the Vancouver Southsiders' tifo in tribute to the Canadian women's national team, here's a picture from my cell phone. Christopher Vose of Away from the Numbers took a proper picture here. The banners read: "BRONZE IN LONDON GOLD IN OUR HEARTS" with a list of the medal-winning players, plus head coach John Herdman. It was completed in less than twenty-four hours by dedicated Southsider volunteers and raised in the twelfth minute in honour of Burnaby native Christine Sinclair.

Vancouver - Salt Lake Post-Game: Contenders

It's time we stopped talking about whether the Vancouver Whitecaps are making the playoffs and start talking about whether they're contenders.

Whitecaps Game Day: Men v. Salt Lake, 4 PM PDT

The Vancouver Whitecaps face a rematch with Real Salt Lake needing to secure more penetration through a strong, ball-holding midfield.

Russell Teibert receives first call-up to Canada

Congratulations to Russell Teibert, who at 19 years of age has earned his first call up to Stephen Hart's senior Canadian national team for a friendly next week against Trinidad and Tobago. Teibert joins a team that is deep at left back with Chivas USA's Ante Jazic and the return of Marcel de Jong, so please let this mean he will be in midfield. However, the press release has him wearing the #3 shirt (de Jong's old number). Quibbling about position is beside the point, however. Congratulations all round, and to Carlyle Mitchell, Dane Richards, Etienne Barbara, and Darren Mattocks who have also been called up this friendly window.

The Best Reactions to Canada's Bronze Medal Triumph

There have been some marvelous reactions already to Canada's bronze medal triumph over France. Here are my favourites.

Canada - France Post-Game: Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God

Canada's victory over France did more than win them bronze: it won them a place as Canadian soccer immortals.

Before this tournament, I would have taken a bronze medal. I would have been absolutely thrilled. But today? After all of that shit? After the indirect free kick and Alex Morgan and France...

MLS Tie-Breaking Rules: We Don't Want the Better Team to Win, Right?

Major League Soccer's newly-announced tiebreaking rules are indefensibly stupid. THE END.

Three Vancouver Whitecaps Make Canada's Women's U-20 World Cup Roster

Congratulations to lady Whitecaps forward Jenna Richardson, midfielder Nicole Setterlund, and midfielder Jaclyn Sawicki on making Andrew Olivieri's 21-woman roster for the forthcoming Women's U-20 World Cup in Japan. None of the three are surprises, as all are youth international regulars and played important roles for the Whitecaps W-League team this past season. With three players on the roster the Whitecaps are contributing the third-most content, behind the Toronto Lynx and Olivieri's hometown club Comètes de Laval. Canada's World Cup kicks off August 20 against Argentina.

Should Canada Boycott the Bronze Medal Game?

If members of the team are punished for telling the truth about the refereeing, should Canada's women's national team boycott Thursday's bronze medal match?

Canada - United States: THAT.

Canada's 120-minute national nightmare at the hands of Norwegian referee Christina Petersen is over, but we certainly shouldn't feel let down by our team.

#9 Oscar Klefbom

19-year-old Swedish defenseman Oscar Klefbom is keeping pace at #9 in the Edmonton Oilers Top 25 Under 25.

Safe to say all of us Leeds United fans are delighted O'Brien has gone. Big wages for our team,...

Safe to say all of us Leeds United fans are delighted O'Brien has gone. Big wages for our team, terrible player and ageing. Sad to see him suffer from depression but he never did anything for us. He was once taken off during a game against a team two divisions below us for playing that bad at centre-back and we were winning. Having said that, and no offence the MLS should be easier for him in more than one way. The MLS is growing no doubt about it but the level over here is much better. He has a chance now to live in a beautiful country, and start again! He has bags of experience, and an old head for those around him. If he can position himself properly then he may make an impact.

Thomas Hill, manager of SB Nation's Leeds United blog Through It All Together, was nice enough to provide his thoughts on new Vancouver Whitecaps defender Andy O'Brien. As you can see, it's not exactly a rave review.

A Programming Note

This is an advisory that yours truly may be a little scarce in these parts for the next little bit. My home computer exploded because I was watching too many Olympic events simultaneously (no,...

Canadian Game Day: Women v. South Africa, 6:45 AM PDT

Canada's women's national team faces a must-win against South Africa but also an almost certain win. The question is, will they get the goal difference?

What Do MLS's Domestic Player Rules Amount To For Canada?

The Canadian Soccer Association is shopping a story that MLS's domestic player rules are costing Canada soccer success. Does it amount to anything?

Canada's Technical Director Should Be Anything but Canadian

The Canadian Soccer Assocation's public advertisement for a technical director may look silly but it means they're searching outside the old boys club. Now, they just need to search outside the...

The MLS All-Star Game is a Shambolic Annual Humiliation

The MLS All-Star Game is an annual joke which demeans MLS as a serious soccer league by its very existence.

Daniel Stanese to Join Florida Gulf Coast University

Vancouver Whitecaps Residency central defender Daniel Stanese has been announced as 2012-13 recruit for Florida Gulf Coast University. Stanese is only a 1994-born player so would have been eligible to play another year at the USSDA level but has apparently decided to move on early. He was also on trial for a contract in Germany earlier this year.
