Canada - Japan Post-Game: Could Be Worse...

Canada lost 2-1 to Japan in their Olympic opener but at least looked good doing it. Their position going into their next game against South Africa could have been so much worse...

#16 - Martin Gernat

Lanky Edmonton Oil Kings defenseman Martin Gernat comes in at number 16 on the Edmonton Oilers Top 25 Under 25.

Canadian Game Day: Women v. Japan, 9 AM PDT

The Canadian women's national team's key against Japan this morning will be some good old-fashioned Even Pellerud route one soccer. No, really.

Canada's Women's National Team at the Olympics: A Preview

The Canadian women's national team has a tough road to a medal this July in London. But it's not an impassible one, if Canada just gets one miracle.

"You Suck Asshole" and MLS Threatening Its Golden Goose

Don Garber is once again on the warpath against "you suck asshole" and other "vulgarity" from MLS supporters groups. But his two-faced dealing in this regard risks killing MLS's golden goose.

Why the Whitecaps U-18s Lose to MLS Roster Rules

The Vancouver Whitecaps U-18s will be moving on after yesterday's USSDA final loss, and what's staggering is that MLS rules seem almost rigged against keeping this young talent.

Vancouver - San Jose Post-Game: Inevitable

Why did Frank Yallop look so miserable when his Earthquakes were tied 1-1 with the Whitecaps? Did he sense the inevitable?

The Big Picture

Some of us get a little heated questioning Martin Rennie's decisions. So let's take a step back and look at the big picture.

Vancouver Whitecaps Trade Eric Hassli to Toronto for Draft Pick, International Slot

It is hard to explain the Vancouver Whitecaps trading Eric Hassli to Toronto FC as anything but a premature overreaction to a slumping player and putting too many eggs in too few baskets.

Canadians Developed by the Vancouver Whitecaps

The narrative says the Vancouver Whitecaps don't develop Canadian talent. The narrative is stupid. Here's why.

Last-Place Edmonton Extends Head Coach Sinkgraven

FC Edmonton has extended head coach Harry Sinkgraven and first assistant Hans Schrivjer even as some fans are calling for their scalps in the midst of a last-place season.

Canadian Men's National Team Schedules August 15 Friendly with Trinidad and Tobago

Canada's just-announced August friendly against Trinidad and Tobago isn't the best preparation for World Cup qualifying, but it is something.

Vancouver - Los Angeles Review

Did the Whitecaps draw against Los Angeles because they were tired? Because they got cocky? Or because they were just stupidly unlucky?

Whitecaps Game Day: Men v. Los Angeles, 7 PM PDT

The Vancouver Whitecaps should be past the point where a home draw is a good result. But, against the Los Angeles Galaxy, they're not.

David Beckham's Got Fans, so Get Them Onside!

Of course the attention given to David Beckham's Vancouver visit is over the top, but it's stupid and counterproductive to take it out on him or his fan club.

Why Pay $500 Million for a Stadium If You Can't Use Half of It?

The Vancouver Whitecaps aren't opening the upper bowl at the renovated BC Place for David Beckham and the LA Galaxy, and that's their decision, but then what were Beckham-hungry BC taxpayers paying...

The Jacob Lensky Saga, Part XXIII: You Can Check Out Any Time You Like (But You Can Never Leave)

Jacob Lensky is back in training with the Vancouver Whitecaps and reportedly close to a contract after a catastrophic first trial and a career filled with retirements and personal problems.

Alderson, Clarke Make USSDA U-18 Conference Team of the Year

Congratulations to Bryce Alderson and Caleb Clarke on being named to the USSDA West Conference U-18 all-star team for 2011/12.

Ben Massey on CBC Radio One's On the Coast, 3:50 Monday

Just a note that your humble correspondent will be on CBC Radio One's On the Coast for a few minutes today around 3:50 PM to talk about the Vancouver Whitecaps and Kenny Miller. It'll just be a short call-in and I'm not allowed to say "fuck" but maybe worth a listen anyway.

[Chiumiento] will wear number 29 for FCZ, the same number that Eric Hassli once wore for the team....

[Chiumiento] will wear number 29 for FCZ, the same number that Eric Hassli once wore for the team. Chiumiento and Hassli are friends, and until recently were teammates on the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

My translation of the best part in FC Zürich's official announcement they have signed Davide Chiumiento. Chiumiento is wearing Hassli's number as tribute? Dawwww. Those two are so adorable they make my teeth hurt. EDIT, 14:30: replaced translation with Rob R. Scott's stronger one, since he speaks German and I look it up.

Vancouver Whitecaps Sign Forward Kenny Miller as Designated Player

The Vancouver Whitecaps shocked nobody but disappointed one author today when they announced the signing of forward Kenny Miller as a designated player.

Whitecaps Game Day: Men @ Chicago, 5:30 PM PDT

CHICAGO FIRE VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (8W-4D-6L, 4th East) vs. (8W-6D-5L, 4th West) Leading Scorer: Marco Pappa and Dominic Oduro (5) Leading Scorer: Darren Mattocks...

Vancouver Whitecaps Trade Sebastien Le Toux to Red Bulls for Dane Richards

The acquisition of Dane Richards from the New York Red Bulls fills a hole for the Vancouver Whitecaps on right wing, but losing Sebastien Le Toux creates another one.

Former Whitecaps Davies, Tan Join Richmond Kickers

Congratulations to former Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Philippe Davies on signing with Richmond Kickers of USL Pro earlier today. The Kickers also brought in another former 'Cap, Long Tan, on loan from DC United. Good luck to him as well.

Toronto - Vancouver Post-Game

The Vancouver Whitecaps loss to Toronto Wednesday night was a nightmare, but (and it sounds weird to say this) that's all.

Whitecaps Game Day: Men @ Toronto, 4 PM PDT

A ghastly schedule is bringing the Vancouver Whitecaps to Toronto this afternoon, but it shouldn't matter. They're still Toronto FC.

Davide Chiumiento Leaving Vancouver Whitecaps; Transferred to FC Zürich

The Vancouver Whitecaps' transfer of Davide Chiumiento to FC Zürich deprives them of a quality player, but is hardly the end of the team's offense.

The Juan de Fuca Plate: British Columbia's Newest Supporters Championship

No matter how much the Canadian Soccer Association tries to screw it, I'll always esteem the Voyageurs Cup over all other domestic trophies. And no matter how irrelevant it is in the greater scheme...

Disappointing Season for BC's PDL Teams

After a great 2011 season it's been a disappointing summer for British Columbia's USL PDL clubs.

Bryan Arguez Loaned from Montreal to Edmonton

FC Edmonton just announced that they have taken midfielder Bryan Arguez on loan from the Montreal Impact. Arguez, 23, joined the Impact this past offseason from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The Eddies have had a lot of problems this year holding and moving the ball through the centre of the park, apart from Shaun Saiko. Arguez is a defensive midfielder by trade, a big lanky guy who's raw but physically solid, so he won't help much there. But he should provide more defensive support for the overworked Paul Hamilton. This might be bad news for rookie Canadian midfielder Kenny Caceros, who's had a decent start to his professional career.
