NFL Early Games - Open Thread
Well, this is unusual. I'm not seeing any football on the TV schedule, and ESPN is quiet for some reason. Oh well. Hopefully it's just a glitch and we'll get our football on without a hitch.
...oh.
Oh God.

Super Bowl Pregame Open Thread
HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE.
But seriously, it's the Super Bowl. It's our last day of football. If NBC is going to milk the broadcast, we may as well join in.
So what's everybody cooking/drinking today?
NFL Awards Rundown+Open Thread
Most Valuable Player: Aaron Rodgers
Offense Player of the Year: Drew Brees
Defensive Player of the Year: Terrell Suggs
Offensive ROY: Cam Newton
Defensive ROY: Von Miller
Coach of the Year: Jim Harbaugh
Comeback Player of the Year: Matt Stafford
Safe, predictable choices all around. The MVP hasn't been announced yet. There's that whole "NFL Honors" show that's playing on NBC at 6, but as you can see, most of the winners have already leaked, so you probably won't waste your time. Then again, we only have about 24 hours of an NFL season left, so I'll take what I can get.
The Official Field Gulls OT Thread - In Which We Gush About Our Favorite TV Shows
Has it felt like a long time since we had this thread? It's because it has been a long time since we had this thread. I apologize for the lack of vigilance.
Anyway, as the title indicates, this is the thread for everyone to shoot the shit about everything not related to Seahawks football, or football in general. For a good jumping off point, I'll talk about the two TV shows that FGers can't get enough of.

Joe Paterno Dies
Like so many things in life, he goes out with a whimper, not a bang.
A Fireside Chat With Benne and Whiskey
This is a new experiment for us. You guys all know whiskey_chainsaw as the asshole who only posts about fantasy football, and you only know me as the asshole who bans other people for being assholes. Well today, we combined forces on Facebook, and decided to copy our entire chat spiels and post them on this blog.
I hope you enjoy them, partly because they're entertaining insights into the FG writers with less inhibitions, partly because whiskey_chainsaw and I can launch into epic rants at the slightest provocation, but mostly because you see our real names and pictures in the transcript.
If people like it, Tyler and I will make this a regular thing.

Jerry Angelo out; Tim Ruskell in?
Apparently Lovie Smith is staying as coach. Bears have a presser scheduled at 2PM PST.
Black Monday Odds and Ends
Today is "Black Monday", the day after the last regular season game, and the traditional time when struggling teams fire their struggling head coaches. The name sounds a lot darker than it really is--there's no stock market crash or overzealous shoppers to contend with--but it's caught on for whatever reason.
Jack Del Rio, Todd Haley and Tony Sparano are already long gone, so they don't even get the honor of celebrating this tradition. Two other coaches have, however, and there may be more to come today.
Raheem Morris got the axe in one of the more predictable firings after his Bucs suffered one of the most epic collapses in recent memory. The team looked like it had so much promise at the end of '10, and by the end of '11 they looked like one of the worst teams in the NFL. Not many coaches are going to survive a step backwards that big. Combine that with Morris' abrasive personality and tendency to pass the buck, and this announcement was only a formality.
The other coach to fall today is Steve Spagnuolo, who wasn't able to steer the Rams out of neutral. Now some people will argue that it wasn't totally his fault, that the talent level is still awful, and that reason is why GM Billy Devany was also given the boot. Spags is still a talented defensive mind and I don't think this is a career-killer for him, but a 10-38 record in three years and record-low attendance is not going to look good on his resume.
There may be more to come on the chopping block today--Jim Caldwell, Norv Turner, Pat Shurmur, Lovie Smith, Leslie Frazier, etc. I'll keep you posted here while we enjoy the bowl games.
Update: The Polians are out in Indy. This makes Caldwell a dead man walking. That was a joke. Because Caldwell is already dead, you see.
Seattle at Arizona Game Thread Part II
This is the last Seahawks football we'll see for 8 months. Excited?
Week 15 Coverage Map
Seahawks in the morning, Tebowtime in the afternoon. I can die happy.
Seahawks Put Rams Out to Pasture, Win 30-13
It wasn't always a pretty game, but the team took care of business and dominated an inferior opponent. Our playoff dream is still alive, and we embarrassed a divisional rival on national television. What more could a fan ask for?
Danny and Co. will have more eloquent posts up later, but use this thread for drunken exuberance and revelry.
Sam Bradford to start tonight
And here I was hoping for the Tom Brandstater Show.
On the Seahawks' side, Heater is good to go, and none of the inactive players are guys we'll miss.
Monday Night Open Thread - Chargers at Jaguars
If you're one of those weird people who will actually be watching this game, talk about it here.
Seahawks Out-Redskin Redskins, Lie Down and Die 23-17
Not much to say about this. Bad, sloppy football all around. Neither team wanted to win this game.
Red Bryant, you're still cool.
Go nuts in the thread. I'm off to cleanse the palette with a bottle. Of paint thinner.
Morning Games Open Thread
The Huskies won 7 games, beat the Cougars, are bowl-bound and I still feel a little disappointed. That's about as sure a sign as any that the Huskies are back. Good work, Sark. Now do something about the goddamn defense. On the other side of the Cascades, it appears that Paul Wulff is out. I'm sorry, Kenny. On second thought, I take that back. I'm laughing at you, Kenny.
Anyway, here's the morning lineup:
HOU@JAC
BUF@NYJ
CLE@CIN
MIN@ATL
ARI@STL
CAR@IND
TB@TEN
When I posted the coverage map last night, my first thought was, "wait, Bills and Jets is the best CBS can do?" After scanning the lineup again, my second thought was, "wow, that is the best they can do." The Red Zone channel is your best friend this morning.

Seahawks Defeat Ravens 22-17 - Postgame Reaction Thread
Holy shit, the Seahawks won? STOP THE PRESSES.
Use this thread for GTE overflow and inane debates and whatnot. I'll have a proper thread for the SNF game up soon.
Joe Paterno fired
Consider this a pseudo-open thread for the Penn St. scandal. There's "lack of institutional control" that involves free cars and fudged SAT scores, and then there's "lack of institutional control" that involves motherfucking child molestation. I have no words. Just sickening.
Rec this fanshot up to keep the thread alive.

We Still Miss You Dave
In case you needed to be reminded that Jeff Sullivan is one of the best writers on the Internet, here's his take on the one-year anniversary of Dave Niehaus' death. I don't know why I called it an "anniversary", it's certainly not something to celebrate.
Anyway, I just wanted to pass it on, because Dave was a Seattle icon that even non-baseball fans loved. One year later, and I still can't quite compute the fact that he is gone. He was like a second father to me.

Monday Night Open Thread - Bears at Eagles
In about 10 minutes ESPN will air a National Football League game. The Philadelphia Eagles will host the Chicago Bears in said game. Lots of people will be watching this game in person at Lincoln Financial Field, and many more on television across the country. Some of those people will want to make comments about the game on the Internet. Websites like Field Gulls will have open game threads that enables people to make these comments.
Bold prediction, I know.
Afternoon Games Open Thread.
I'm in kind of a shitty mood so I'm silently rooting for Tim Tebow's decapitation.
Lions Fans Fight to Remove Nickelback From Thanksgiving Performance
The "official" grievance is that they don't want a Canadian band representing a city with such a rich music history, but we all really know why they're doing this. Fight the good fight, Detroit. You've suffered enough.

I probably won't be watching the game or reading this thread, as it's Halloween and I have my annual Evil Dead marathon to attend to. But for those who are watching this game, post stuff in here or something.

The Myth of Momentum
Three weeks ago, the Seahawks beat the Giants on the Meadowlands. It was a mostly unremarkable game, serving as a microcosm of New York's slow talent rot that culminated in the near-loss against the repugnant Miami Dolphins today.
Instead of sighing in relief, most Seahawk fans took that win as a milestone, another solid rock for Pete Carroll's rebuilding wagon to step upon. It helps that the win came before a bye week, so we had two whole weeks to soak it in. "They won! On the road! At 10AM! Against a team that's supposed to be good! Things are only looking up!" The common thread throughout was this word that means little in reality but means everything to fantasy writers and sports pundits: momentum.
The Seahawks beat a team they weren't supposed to beat. So of course they would carry momentum through the bye week. How does one have momentum in a bye week? Fuck you, it's momentum and you're too much of a simpleton to understand. Momentum will help them against the Browns. Momentum will help Charlie Whitehurst go through his progressions, fix the run game, and get the defense off the field quicker. Momentum.
The Seahawks lost to the Browns in one of the worst games in franchise history. Seven days later, they lost to the Bengals in one of the worst games in franchise history. None of that feel-good, media-friendly juju helped them in either case.
You should already see where I'm going with this, but just in case: talent wins football games. Momentum does not, and neither does narrative. I don't care about the player's individual life stories or their halftime speeches. I want my team to be good at football, and win football games because they're good at football. Spare me the smokescreens.
