Cal's Confident Soares could be the next standout college defender
This is Adam Serrano from the BerkeleySportsBlog.com, I've begun writing for the American Soccer site, SoccerbyIves.Net as well as MLSSoccer.com and this is an article that I wrote for SBI about Cal Soccer's co-captain A.J. Soares. For a fun little UCLA and Cal debate check out the comments of the actual article which is linked here: http://bit.ly/aiFFgC For more Cal Soccer and MLS coverage follow me on twitter at twitter.com/adamserrano

BY ADAM SERRANO
The college ranks have filled Major League Soccer with several young central defenders ripe with potential in recent years, with the likes of Omar Gonzalez, Ike Opara and Tim Ream making the smooth transition from college to the pros.
University of California defender A.J. Soares could be the next to join that list. The cerebral yet extremely physical defender has quickly put himself on the national map with his steady play for Cal.
The senior central defender enters the 2010 season after very successful 2009 for the Golden Bears. In 2009, Soares was the club's defensive MVP and a first team All-Pac-10 selection. After earning several accolades last season, the Cal co-captain has once again put himself in the spotlight after being named a second team preseason All-American by the College Soccer News.
Profile of a Golden Bear: Calen Carr

Growing up on the UC Berkeley campus, Chicago Fire forward Calen Carr is a Berkeley boy through and through. With his mother a professor at the University, Carr grew up practicing step overs and arithmetic throughout the UC Berkeley campus. It was fate that Calen would end up playing for the Golden Bears where he would score 22 goals in his four year career with Cal. While graduating with a degree in 2005 in Mass Communications. Calen would continue his career professionally with the Chicago Fire after being drafted 10th in the 2006 draft. However, the forward turned winger endured several injuries which made it difficult for him to see the field with Chicago. In 2010, the Berkeley product has signed a contract extension with the Fire in hopes of cementing his role for the Eastern Conference power house

Profile of a Golden Bear: Luke Sassano

Luke Sassano lived the soccer dream last season as he went from First Round draft pick to MLS Cup in just one short season. However, this year things have been much more difficult for the former Cal star as his MLS club, the New York Red Bulls have been at the bottom of the MLS standings all year. BerkeleySportsBlog.com caught up with the Orinda, CA star and asked him about the Red Bulls, his time at Cal and his love of Karaoke.

Born in Switzerland and raised in Concord, California.
