Rangers starters poised to make team history.
I realize I'm just begging for a course-correcting freak injury, as well as pointing at a stat most modern baseball fans consider irrelevant, but CJ Wilson (10-3), Alexi Ogando (10-3), Colby Lewis (9-7), Derek Holland (8-4), and Matt Harrison (8-7) are on the cusp of becoming first quintet of starters in team history (51st season) to post 10-win seasons in the same year.

Rangers Playoff Highlight Mix. Took me longer to finish than it probably would have if Texas had won the Series, but I'm happy with how it came out.
Five Thoughts and Observations Before Game 5
1. I’ve been wandering up and down the intertubes, reading all the various articles about Texas being up 3-1 in the ALCS and the dominant way they’ve gone about doing it. It’s all great stuff, especially the New York papers, which all seem convinced that the Yankees are beating themselves rather than getting the stuffing pounded out of them by a better team.
But every once in a while, I stumble over variations on the words “the Rangers are just one win away from their first pennant” or “Texas needs one more win to advance to their first World Series”.
And when that happens, my heart skips a beat every time.
Scraping The Bottom Of The Barrel For NFL Analysis
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-total-access/09000d5d8159988f/NFC-East-showdown
Watch in wonder as Torry Holt explains how to get Brian Westbrook involved in Saturday's game. Not, strangely enough, by having him get in the way-back machine, so he can go back to when he had a devastating burst, but by "putting him in the slot" and "putting him in motion".
This vid proves two things. That Torry will never be anyone's offensive coordinator, and that he will never be a successful broadcaster. Apparently, the NFL Network hasn't figured out yet that a snazzy set does not make someone a competent commentator.
I'm looking at you, Deion. I'm also refusing to listen to you.
But my favorite part is the line by Jamie Dukes, where he explains that Andy Reid wasn't prepared to show his whole hand because: "Winning that game was not the ultimate prize, even though there was a lot on the line, with the division crown and all. But we know that Minnesota already had the number two seed locked up."
Now, it's not the fact that's he's dead wrong about that last bit, and even casual fans should know it that annoys me. There's a chance that he simply didn't realize that Philly controlled the number two seed at the time, and simply made a mistake, one that anyone could have. It's the fact that none of the other three guys even blink, much less bother correcting him.
That's either willful ignorance, or horrendous preparation.

Biggest Football Weekend In Texas Since... ?
Thursday night, the University of Texas Longhorns go into the BCS National Championship Game as underdogs against Alabama, looking for their fifth National Title, and the second since Mack Brown took over the program.
On Saturday night, the Dallas Cowboys face what I feel has become their most hated rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, with a chance to snap a decade plus long playoff losing streak, coming in as the clear favorites after blowing them out of Cowboys Stadium six days earlier.
So when was the last time so much was at stake, in the span of 48 hours, and how do you see the games playing out?
The Saints Long, Weary Road, and the Eagles' Dirty Little Secret
Is Doug Free the guy who finally succeeds Flozell at LT?
There's never been a shortage of Cowboys fans looking for a reason to dump Flozell, who for all his immense physical abilities, sometimes comes off as having a head (and ears) filled with sawdust. Who, along with his multiple Pro Bowl appearances, is also the perennial league leader in false start penalties, which often seem to come at the worst possible moments, not that there is a good time for such a thing.
That being said, there's a perfectly good reason Jerry Jones keeps throwing money at the guy, that being that a sutiable replacement has never truely been available. Certainly Dallas could have found a left tackle who didn't jump as often, or someone who was better at handling a speed rush, but at the end of the day, guys who are 6' 8' and 340 pounds, and who posess actual talent, are very few and far between.
But with the way Free has been playing, I could very easily invision a scenario where Dallas allows Flo to go his own way after the season, and moves Doug over to the left side, where I've heard he's a more natural fit.
Am I blowing smoke here? Just hoping that Dallas might have accidentally lucked into a pretty good offensive lineman, someone who can hold down that very improtant blind side position, when they've been so inconsistant at drafting them over the last decade or so, or might the Boys actually have something here?
For Stat-Geeks And Romosexuals
Killing time while wondering how many team records Tony Romo has a chance to break against the Eagles, and if he‘s going to get shafted out of the Pro Bowl this year. Between him, Brees, Farve, and Rodgers, someone will.

Interesting FOX Pregame-Jay Glazer note.
During the Jay Glazer update (really the only reason to bother with the show), he mentioned that the Redskins were already putting the peices in place to make a run at Mike Shanahan after the season. Nothing particularly surprising about that (never mind that the Washington players are killing themselves trying to save Zorn's job, something that Dan Snyder clearly doesn't comprehend).
I was equally unsurprised to hear that Mike has his eye on the Dallas job, but what did catch me off guard was Glazer's almost offhand comment that Dallas didn't have much interest in him. Does anybody know why, or is Jay just guessing? I'm one of the rapidly-dwindling Wade supporters, but Shanahan is on the short list of guys, along with Dungy and Cowher, that I'd fire him to get in here.
Anthony Spencer Won This Game
#93 has been getting a lot of (deserved) flack here for not having registered a sack yet, but I believe that he made the most important play of the game, with just one hand.

Did Otis Smith outsmart Donnie, or himself?
(Originally posted this on Mavs Moneyball, but I'd like the Orlando perspective on it as well.)
Having been one of the people most convinced that Otis Smith had no intention of matching the offer sheet for Gortat, I was pretty shocked when the news came down on Monday that they had done just that. The popular theory in Mavericks-Land is that Otis was playing Donnie the whole time. My personal theory is that the man has no idea what he's doing.

Let's Give Donnie and Cuban a Little Credit Here...
There seems to be a lot of distress and handwringing over the moves (or lack thereof) that the Mavs have made in the off-season so far, and I'm not quite sure why...
Well Done and Good Luck
As a Mavericks fan, I'd just like to pass on my congragulations and good wishes to the Nuggets as they move on in the playoffs.
Scattershots
Scattershooting while wondering if Walter Bond ever actually did get twenty shots in a game.
(Bonus points for anyone who gets that reference, and still remembers Blackie Sherrod.)
One Number: 65.5%
Been wondering how Chauncey Billups and the Nuggets were able to make such short work of the Hornets? 65.5% explains a whole lot.
Do the Pats really deserve an asterisk?
When I heard a few fans say it, I assumed that it was a matter of jealousy. When Don Shula said it, I figured he was just miffed that he might lose his place in NFL history as the coach of the only ever undefeated team.
Packers preparing for rematch
I thought this was an interesting article, about how the Packers are reacting to the Thursday Night game. Of particular note was Ryan Pickett, who provided both future bulletin board material, as well as proof that players can be just as silly as fans when it comes to explaining away brutal losses by saying that they could have easily won the game, if not for their own mistakes.
"The plays we gave them, it was like we could have had this game easily," nose tackle Ryan Pickett said. "We just had too many big mistakes and that's how they beat us. We made some big-time mistakes. It's uncharacteristic of us, guys being in the wrong place, not doing what they were supposed to do."
That's right, Ryan. Dallas had nothing to do with it. You keep telling yourself that.
See you in January.
Most overrated QB matchup ever?
Found this while I was scouting out the Packers.
Football Outsiders rank 2007 Cowboys as among best ever
I was just glancing at the most recent Football Outsiders DVOA rankings and noticed a few very interesting numbers.
Offense, Offense, Offense, But What About the Defense?
All I hear is Brady vs El Tigre, O.G. 81 vs New Money 81, Witten vs Watson, Maroney vs MB3 (although not nearly as much as you might expect, given that they were at Minnesota together), but how do the respective Defenses match up?
