Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Toronto Raptors

San Antonio Spurs @ Toronto Raptors
Air Canada CentreFebruary 15, 2012, 6:00 pm Spurs Time
TV: FSSW - RADIO: WOAI 1200 AM
The Spurs are rolling into Canada playing good basketball (except for that 4th quarter in Mo-Town) just in time to get a SEGABABA trap game. The Raptors are not too good. They are 28th in the NBA in Offensive Rating and 18th in the league in Defensive Rating, according to basketball-reference.com. Which of course makes this a perfect trap game. A bad team at home getting the Spurs on the back end of a back to back, what could possibly go wrong?
The Spurs and the Wild Wild West
So as we close in on the half-way point of this shortened NBA season your beloved San Antonio Spurs sit at 19-9 good enough for third in the Western Conference. Are the Spurs contenders in the West? If so, who are the teams to beat? In this uncertain year of weird schedules and even weirder results, San Antonio is getting back their best player in the midst of their longest road trip of the year and just happen to be playing their best basketball of the year. Teams like Dallas and the Lakers are struggling to keep pace, while the young guns in OKC and the "other" LA team are setting the bar. It's an odd year to say the least, so let's take a look at the contenders and pretenders in the West.

Some random Spurs ponderings
I have some random Spurs thoughts that I thought I'd put down on screen and share them with you all. I'll call them ponderings:
This just in, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan are good, really good. Anybody who says that either of them shouldn't be an All-Star is just a hater. You cannot name 3 point guards playing better than Parker right now (if you can, you shouldn't because it will ruin my point). The man has turned into a passing machine averaging 7.7 dimes per game. A career high. He's still as good as ever at scoring and quite frankly he's just better than most people think. Duncan isn't his old self, I went and looked at his numbers from the past and they are redunkulous. That said, he's still a top 3-5 big man in the entire NBA these days. Who would you rather have? Dwight Howard, Kevin Love, maybe Pau Gasol and then.....Bynum? Chandler? Bogut? Nene? Griffin? Pass. There's not a team in the NBA who wouldn't improve drastically with him on the roster. These two guys have carried the Spurs in the absences of Manu Ginobili and the team has improved thanks to their leadership.

Hey, Blake Griffin, Meet Savalace Townsend
This is one sick dunk.
"I have no appreciation for it at all," said Perkins' Thunder teammate Kevin Durant. "It was a layup, I think. He threw the ball in and got fouled and made his free throw, so it was three points at the end of the day, no matter how it happened, how it went in the basket. I really wasn't impressed. He finished it. So what? We've moved on."
Dunk'd?
Let me just say that Blake Griffin is good at dunking. However, I must say that this new trend of "dunking" by throwing the ball in the basket from close range is weak sauce. I mean, sure it's impressive that you can jump that high and all of that athletic stuff. All of this nonsense started with Dwight Howard in the Slam Dunk Competition during all-star weekend a few years ago:
Now really? He gets a 10 for that "dunk"? He just jumped and caught the ball and threw it in. Just because he was wearing a cape he gets a 10? Stupid. However, as bad as that was, at least it wasn't in a game. No, Blake Griffin has taken the Phantom Dunk to a hole new level

Game Preview: Atlanta Hawks at San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs vs Atlanta Hawks
AT&T Center, San Antonio, TexasJan. 25, 2012, 7:30 p.m. Spurs Time
TV: FSSW - RADIO: WOAI 1200 AM
As the Spurs come off of their 2nd road win of the year and first win in the last four games they get to face a high flying Hawks team that is playing well. The Hawks sit at 13-5 and have acquitted themselves well this season despite being with out Kirk Hinrich and losing Al Horford for a large chunk of the year. They sit atop the Southeast Division ahead of both Florida teams. The question for this game will be if the Spurs can shut down the high scoring offense that Atlanta brings to the table?

RJ, are you for real?
Growing up in a very conservative home, I was never told that Santa Claus was real or that he'd bring us presents. My parents, for a variety of reasons, never felt it necessary to tell us that some fat guy from the North Pole was going to give us the presents they had bought us (why give him credit?*). Part of our Christmas tradition became reading the book "Santa, are you for real?". It's a heart warming tale of the real St. Nicholas and his exploits.
Having just come out of the holiday season and enjoying some Spurs basketball, I took notice of a seemingly much-different Richard Jefferson. Now we all remember RJ2.0. He started off really, really well last year and even ended up with some very nice stats, but he faded. In fact, he faded quite badly down the stretch; so much so that we didn't even seem him in the last half of the final playoff debacle game. So the question is now RJamnesty, are you for real?
Nat'l Championship Loser Thread
Join us for the College National Football Championship....the sham that it is.
LSU's Tigers are going at it with the Crimson Tide of Alabama in tonight's game. These two teams met in a defensive struggle that ended in a 9-6 snoozer. Hopefully this will be a better game.
Game Preview: Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs vs Dallas Mavericks
AT&T1/5/11, 7:30 p.m. Spurs Time
TV: FSSW - RADIO: 1200 AM WOAI
So, the Spurs are to face the champions tonight. The Mavericks. The Spurs will be without cult hero Manu "Batman" Ginobili. It’s clear that San Antonio misses it’s beloved star. Losing to the T-Wolves is bad enough, but then to drop a second straight game against the hapless Warriors would be darn near unbearable. Fortunately, Tony Parker, the Big Fundamental and RJ 3.0 saved the Spurs from being .500 six games into the season. Pop’s crew now sits at 4-2 heading into the back end of a back to back against their North Texas Rivals. The good news? Mavs are on a SEGABABA as well.
PS: Reports says Spurs interested in Hayes
Yes. Yes, please.
Spurs at Rockets Pre-Season Game #1 Preview - Basketball...finally
|
Toyota Center, Houston, Texas |
After a long post season of watching our cross state rivals win it all (while our beloved Spurs sat at home...or on a beach somewhere, followed by a long off-season of watching guys argue over dollar amounts we can only dream of and seeing no NBA basketball. After all of that and more we are going to see some real life Spurs basketball TONIGHT!
Well sort of, the Spurs notified the press...and us...that Tim Duncan and Tony Parker are not making the trip to Houston. It seems Pop is keeping Timmy and Tony under wraps. Yeah, that's it...they're a secret. Anyway, Gary Neal is also home in San Antonio recovering from surgery and according to his twitter he's not happy about it. Manu Ginobili is making the trip, apparently Luis Scola owes him dinner. Corey Joseph did make it to Houston to play the first pre-season game.

WP: Pop not giving any hints on Roster
"We’re meeting and trying to decide who we want to sign and what free agents to go after and do we want to make any trades," Popovich said. "That’s the emphasis between now and when training camp opens, for all the teams. ...We’re all calling the same agents and free agents. It’s a little bit of zoo in that sense."
Do the Spurs need another big man?
So after Edg5 reviewed all the free agents the Spurs might realistically get, and after SBD took a look at each of the Spurs, I have just one question: What do the Spurs need? I mean, we all know that we WANT the best players at the low, low cost of free ... or the league minimum (whew, that was close, I don't want to start another labor dispute) but what do the Silver and Black really need to improve on last season's performance?
Maslow's hierarchy of ... Spurs
via upload.wikimedia.org
To my knowledge the consensus is another big man. A 4/5 guy who can help rebound and control the paint. I think most Spurs fans are assuming that Antonio McDyess will call it quits and that leaves our boys fairly thin on the front line. With that said, I'm not totally sold that a big man is the route the Spurs need to go on the off-season, free-agent highway.

Ziller ranks top Free Agents
This is an interesting list. I'm not sure I agree with all his rankings, but it's a nice read.
Roesenthal: Danks and Floyd may be available
For teams seeking to trade for a starting pitcher, the White Sox can offer one from Column A and one from Column B.
Lefty John Danks appeals to high-revenue teams – he will get a raise from $6 million in his final year of arbitration, then hit free agency.
Righty Gavin Floyd, on the other hand, fits nicely for low-revenue clubs – he is signed for $7 million next season with a $9.5 million club option for 2013.
BR: Duncan's Legacy Tarnished?
Notice the comment from Mendez, D. after the article. Could that have been our beloved LatinD sticking up for the GOATPUFF?
CBS: Fisher says no rift in NBAPA
Apparently the players are trying to put to bed any idea of a rift in their ranks. At the bottom of the article David Stern fined an owner $500K for some comments.
This thing is starting to fall apart....hopefully it will, soon.
Blame Game
So the NBA is in a lockout. We're all upset about it. Rich people fighting with rich people over money. So who's to blame? There's always got to be somebody to blame, right? I mean the Cubs blame Steve Bartman and a goat. The Democrats blame the Republicans and vice versa. The White Spy blames the Black Spy...and well the White Spy gets revenge.
So who's to blame on this lockout? Why don't we see if we can play the blame game...

Not good.

Yes.
Harrell signs with Packers practice squad
Forgive me if this has already been posted, but Harrell is back with the Packers on their practice squad.
PS: Spurs draftee ready for NBA?
This is a nice write up from our pals over at Project Spurs on a former Spurs draft pick.
ESPN: OU and UT looking at Pac-16
"We're wedded to that model," Scott said, adding, "anyone who is going to be a member of our conference is going to be a part of our network model."
Interesting stuff.
Fox: TAMU on the way to the SEC
The words "amicable divorce" were reportedly used by a number of presidents on the call.
(Looks like this is going to happen next week. I think the Aggies are shooting themselves in the foot. Short sided decisions made in a hurry...yeah, that's a good plan.)
Mike Monroe looks at Gladwell's Piece
"It is left to Spurs owner Peter Holt, chairman of the owners’ negotiating committee and someone who has enjoyed that ultimate psychic benefit on four different occasions, to herd the cats who own the other 29 NBA teams and hope the hardliners who prefer to think only in business terms don’t hiss too loudly at the next negotiating session."
Ranking the 5 Greatest Coaches in NBA history
Let me say that this list is ridiculous for the mere fact that 3 or 4 of these guys have no place being ranked ahead of Pop.
