Spurs at Rockets Pre-Season Game #1 Preview - Basketball...finally

The San Antonio Spurs are set to meet the Houston Rockets in their first pre-season tilt.

WP: Pop not giving any hints on Roster

+

"We’re meeting and trying to decide who we want to sign and what free agents to go after and do we want to make any trades," Popovich said. "That’s the emphasis between now and when training camp opens, for all the teams. ...We’re all calling the same agents and free agents. It’s a little bit of zoo in that sense."

Do the Spurs need another big man?

Do the Spurs really need another big man? Big50 turns the conventional wisdom on it's head.

Ziller ranks top Free Agents

This is an interesting list. I'm not sure I agree with all his rankings, but it's a nice read.

Roesenthal: Danks and Floyd may be available

1

For teams seeking to trade for a starting pitcher, the White Sox can offer one from Column A and one from Column B. Lefty John Danks appeals to high-revenue teams – he will get a raise from $6 million in his final year of arbitration, then hit free agency. Righty Gavin Floyd, on the other hand, fits nicely for low-revenue clubs – he is signed for $7 million next season with a $9.5 million club option for 2013.

BR: Duncan's Legacy Tarnished?

Notice the comment from Mendez, D. after the article. Could that have been our beloved LatinD sticking up for the GOATPUFF?

CBS: Fisher says no rift in NBAPA

12

Apparently the players are trying to put to bed any idea of a rift in their ranks. At the bottom of the article David Stern fined an owner $500K for some comments. This thing is starting to fall apart....hopefully it will, soon.

AJ: Stephen's status uncertain

There was no immediate report on the extent of the injury, but Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said, "It doesn’t look good." Not good.

Harrell signs with Packers practice squad

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but Harrell is back with the Packers on their practice squad.

PS: Spurs draftee ready for NBA?

This is a nice write up from our pals over at Project Spurs on a former Spurs draft pick.

ESPN: OU and UT looking at Pac-16

"We're wedded to that model," Scott said, adding, "anyone who is going to be a member of our conference is going to be a part of our network model." Interesting stuff.

Fox: TAMU on the way to the SEC

11

The words "amicable divorce" were reportedly used by a number of presidents on the call. (Looks like this is going to happen next week. I think the Aggies are shooting themselves in the foot. Short sided decisions made in a hurry...yeah, that's a good plan.)

Mike Monroe looks at Gladwell's Piece

1

"It is left to Spurs owner Peter Holt, chairman of the owners’ negotiating committee and someone who has enjoyed that ultimate psychic benefit on four different occasions, to herd the cats who own the other 29 NBA teams and hope the hardliners who prefer to think only in business terms don’t hiss too loudly at the next negotiating session."

Ranking the 5 Greatest Coaches in NBA history

4

Let me say that this list is ridiculous for the mere fact that 3 or 4 of these guys have no place being ranked ahead of Pop.

'Psychic Benefits' and the NBA Lockout

11

Malcolm Gladwell takes a look at the NBA lockout. Warning: I haven't read all of this, but it appears to be an interesting point of view. Also, this is a site that is set up by Bill Simmons. You've been warned.

Real Madrid sign 7-year-old

5

This is soccer, so it's not quite the same, but come on! 7 year olds?

BR: Worst Trades

4

They have the Spurs trade for Jefferson as the worst trade the Spurs ever made. This is extremely short sided, in my opinion. That trade isn't that bad, considering what the three players we traded for RJ have done. On top of that the author completely over looks the Rodman for Purdue trade. Which, while done because of personality conflicts, was a really bad deal on the court. I'd even venture to say that the Rodman for Elliot trade was worse than the Jefferson deal.

1560 The Game: Brooks interview about Feldman

+

Interesting stuff. I think he pretty much has ESPN nailed. I'm still waiting for somebody to talk to Feldman or to hear from him.

PS: Ginobili Retirement Plans

6

Interesting stuff. Sounds like we may be seeing last of Manu over the next couple of seasons...hopefully.

SN: Raptors looking at Lindsey for GM spot

+

"The Toronto Raptors are preparing to target Lindsey, who just finished his fourth season as the Spurs’ assistant GM, as a candidates in their front-office hunt."

SN: San Antonio ranks #1

8

That's right. San Antonio is the best basketball city in the NBA. This is a fun little distraction in the midst of a very slow time in basketball. Good stuff by Tim Griffin.

MySA: No Deal, Lockout in the NBA

1

NEW YORK (AP) — Union chief Billy Hunter says "it's obvious the lockout will happen tonight" after players and owners failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, potentially putting the 2011-12 season in jeopardy.
