O/T: UT gets papers of David Foster Wallace
This is off-topic, but I know we have some DFW readers here at BON so I thought I'd share. The Ransom Center has aquired a lot of Wallace's personal manuscripts, research, early works, etc, and will be displaying selected items in the lobby through April 9.

NFL Defends Moats Fumble Call
The NFL has agreed with the ruling on the field regarding the Moats fumble, saying there's just not enough evidence to rule anything else. Mike Pereira (NFL's head of officiating): "We could never find a shot that showed the ball touched out of bounds... We could never find a shot that showed on TV that it touched one of the players while they were out of bounds." They also agreed that Powers touched the ball before re-establishing position in the field, resulting in a touchback.
My ruling of their ruling: 3 dismissive wanks and an eye roll.

Demeco unhappy with "guys upstairs"?
This can't be good...
Demeco is unhappy with how his contract negotiations are going and the fact that he isn't currently locked up in a long-term deal. In an interview with 790 he makes a point that the core defensive guys are not being taken care of ahead of free agents when it comes to contract talks. He sympathizes with Dunta, saying "it's hard to participate when you are mad at the guys upstairs." Also, he is frustrated that he and his agent haven't been able to get a deal done quickly enough with the Texans management (sound familiar?).
I read it on Steph's blog at the Chron, but she cites Texans Talk forums in addition to the 790 podcast. There's also a good interview with Chester Pitts.
Martellus Bennett Still Running his Mouth
Although not in any anti-UT way, he still makes himself look like an absolute jackass. And I enjoyed every second of it. What an embarassment.
Stradley interviews KC Joyner, re: the secondary
Besides giving MDC props, Steph Stradley interviews ESPN's KC Joyner, who uses performance metrics to analyze the League (interesting in the Bill James/Baseball kind of way). She mostly asks about the secondary, and a couple of surprising answers come to light. Using his metrics (in this case YPA), we overrate Dunta and underrate Frenchy. Also, Fred Bennet's struggles were probably just of the "sophomore slump" variety and he should improve noticeably next season.
Head over to her blog at the Chron (it's the good one; you'll know it when you see it) to read why/more, and give her some page views and feedback.
Roy Dresses as Tatum Bell for Halloween
Roy being Roy: he dressed as former Lion/bagage thief Tatum Bell at a Halloween party hosted by former teammate Mike Furrey for charity.
Yet another reason why he one of the greatest Longhorns ever: off-field personality.

Vikes' DTs Pat & Kevin Williams Expected to Play.
With all the discussion regarding the diuretics a few guys have tested positive for, my hope that the Vikings two monster defensive tackles would be suspended in time for our game with them this Sunday is now crushed. Pro Bowlers Pat and Kevin Williams are expected to play, so I will not be trading for Slaton in my FFL anymore.
I only need 14 more words to reach that 75 word limit limit limit.
UT-UNC Basketball Series in the Works
Bumped from the Fan Posts.
Per the Statesman, UT and UNC are trying to schedule a 4-game basketball series beginning next year (Dec 19, to be specific). That game will (they hope) be played in Dallas at Jerryworld, followed by a 2010 date in Greensboro, NC, and then a game at each school's campus.
In related news, my man-crush on Rick Barnes continues to grow.
This is also a good time to note single-game tickets for Texas basketball games for 2008-09 are now on sale through the Texas Box Office.
Emory Blake tears up Akins High
If I remember correctly, Mack kind didn't give him much consideration last year because of injuries. Now, I hope MB is still keeping an eye on him after he destroyed Akins High last night. Check out the linked box score, which I will sum up here:
90-yard KO return TD
2 carries, 128 yards, 1 TD (which went for 93 yds)
2 receptions, 53 yards, 1 TD (44 yds)
After looking at his rivals page, the 4* WR no longer has Texas on his mind. He is considering BC, Florida, Oregon, and Big 12 schools CU, KU, Mizzou, Nebraska, Tech.
To reiterate: he is from Austin High (yes, in Austin), he's a big-time playmaker, #20 on the Texas Top 100, and he's healthy. But a year ago he was injured, so Mack lost interest. Did I miss anything?
HOU/TEN Scouting Report from former GM
Pro Football Talk has a scouting report for our game written by former Broncos GM Ted Sundquist. In a nutshell, his keys are:
1) Texans must establish confidence in their offense
2) DeMeco is most important in stopping Titans' running game
3) Titans must open up passing game (downfield) with pocket-comfortable Collins under center
4) Fat Albert
5) 'Dre Davis must help Texans by establishing good field position, and possibly breaking one
Go read it. It is excellent stuff.

How did our recruits fare?
It's going to be a long day until our Horns kick off, so let's fill some of that time with updates on how our recruits are performing. We already know very well how Gilbert and Paden Kelly did, but what about everyone else?
I'll start:
RB Chris Whaley of Madisonville racked up 207 yards rushing on 20 carries (a healthy 10.35 yds/att) with 4 tds on runs of 28, 22, 42, and 59. The dude is a bruiser at 6'3'' and 230+ pounds, running in the mid 4.5 range. Looks like a great RB/FB hybrid, or a hell of a linebacker with his size and speed if Mack wants him to.
WR Greg Timmons of Aldine Eisenhower and TE Barrett Matthews of North Shore played against each other Friday night, with North Shore winning 33-14. Timmons caught one ball for 34 yards, and Matthews had 2 for 38, including a 36-yard TD.
How'd everyone else do?

Just for fun: Pissing contest between Colts and Titans bloggers
Take a few minutes from your day and head on over to Music City Mircles to witness a hilarious pissing contest between Big Blue Shoe and the MCM community. And just when you think it's dying down, another laugh out loud topic/accusation comes up.
Augustin dazzles in predraft workout for Blazers
Article from the Oregonian states the Blazers may be falling in love with DJ. He may not be around at 13 when they pick, but if he is it looks like they'll snatch him up. Sounds like in his workout other people found out what we already know.
Linklater's Augie Doc
Director (and baseball fan, and Austin resident) Rick Linklater has created a documentary about Augie Garrido titled Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach. From the site: "The film profiles this remarkable coach's career and unique approach to teaching the game with unprecedented access to his team meetings, practices, and conversations with players during games."
Should be very interesting and very well done. Plus, proceeds from the screening go to the Austin Film Society and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow (May 27) for the screening, which will be at the Paramount Theater on June 3.

Hitler was a Cowboys Fan
A brilliant re-working of the subtitles of the movie "Downfall" reveals Hitler's pain at the Cowboys loss. It's about 4 minutes long, and absurdly hilarious.

Football to play a Thursday night game in 08
Per the Statesman both Texas and USC will play one Thursday night ESPN-televised game in 08. USC will play Oregon State, but which Texas game it will be is TBA. They said it won't be FAU or OU, and the likely bet IMO is Arkansas.
Trade Alert - We have a closer
Stros just traded Burke, Qualls, and Juan Gutierrez to the D-Backs for Jose Valverde.
This thing literally went down a few minutes ago, so not much info out yet.
D-Backs also traded for Dan Haren, so our trade kinda takes a back seat to that one.
Wildfire's effect on game?
Its getting more and more news coverage over the last few days, and now its affecting sports. The California wildfires have forced a whole bunch of Chargers (and Padres) players to evacuate their homes.
The Chargers are moving their practices to Arizona's facilities, and Qualcomm's parking lots are being used as evacuation shelters. If it continues, next week's Texans-Chargers game might be played at Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium.
Crap....Cobb done for season
Jo Duarte of the Houston Chronicle reports that Antwan Cobb is having surgery on his left ACL, which he injured during the ISU game. This leaves Texas scary thin at fullback until Tiemann gets back. He says it will be Irby and Redwine getting most time at FB.
It could be worse
Step One: Turn to face east
Step two: Laugh, laugh, laugh some more at the Carolina Panthers and their excuse for a backup quarterback
Zoolander: 19-41, 155, 1 TD, 1 INT, sacked thrice
My disappointment in today's Texans game is made easier to take knowing we are led by a competent, gifted QB. It could be worse...
UT About to Pass ND in All Time Victories
From the FanHouse Texas is fixin to pass Notre Dame for #2(!!) on the all time victories list. ND is sitting at 821, and Texas is at 817 now. It's possible Texas will pass this season, but will definitely pass them by this point in next season.
Too funny not to post
I figure its time for a change of tune this week, so let's go back to a classic topic here at BON...
Ronnie Turner, the Houston Chronicle's small school sports blogger, posed the most ridiculous question on his blog today: Is Rhett Bomar the best college QB in the state?
I realize it's probably just to get people to his page, but still, its good for a laugh. What's worse is that some commenters think so.
