Podium Cafe Paris Roubaix Postscript: A Short Chat with Jonathan Vaughters

Arenberg_cobbles_medium

The very first thing I wondered after Paris-Roubaix last Sunday was, When you know that no matter who wins, he's going to have the upper body strength of a 5 year old, why do you create a trophy that's got to weigh every ounce of 30 pounds? You have to think that race organizers watch each edition's winner struggle desperately to hoist this mighty chunk of stone above their heads while posing for the camera, and then laugh until they cry.

The second thing I wondered after Paris-Roubaix was, "Why the heck is Jonathan Vaughters getting bashed for winning? And what exactly was his strategy at Paris-Roubaix? Below the fold, some talk about the debate and a short interview with Vaughters.

Question: Ever Been . . .

It seems that it isn't so hard to find a guy who's a great climber and an a great TT rider. But it seems like sprinting and climbing well is not so common. Has there ever been a guy who was great at both? Has there ever been a sprinter who was a serious Grand Tour GC contender? For a single Grand Tour? Over the course of several? I'm asking this because sprinters often seem to be the peloton's red-headed stepchildren and taken as second class.

Podium Cafe Shimano Flight Deck Bike Computer

My new CX bike, and the road bike I'm intending to get over the winter, are both set up to accept Shimano's Flight Deck bike comuter system. Since I'm not especially happy with my Cateye, and Schwinn (I loved my Schwinn computers , they're inexpensive and work flawlessly) doesn't make one with the features I want, I was thinking of upgrading to the Flight Deck.

I'm hoping that some of you own it already and won't mind sharing your thoughts on it.

Do you think it was a good purchase, or do you wish you spent  your money on something else?

What are Flight Deck's strengths and weaknesses?

Thanks.

Podium Cafe Best Value Wheels

One of the things I found interesting and helpful in the recent issue with Mavic's R-Sys wheel failure was the fairly common view that the R-Sys wheels were not such a great value. That they were overpriced, too heavy and had very poor areo qualities, even aside from the potential to leave a ride face down in the road.

So I would really love a little input on what you feel IS a good value in wheels. What is the best combination of pirce, quality and (if it applies) aero.

One more. If someone bought an entry level bike (road, cx or mountain) what would be a reasonable wheel to upgrade to?

Any kind of wheels, road, CX, moutain bike, clincher, tubeless, tubular.

And it doesn't have to be other than Mavic. If you believe that Mavic has a wheel that is a great combination of price and quality, throw it out there.

Thank you, and I'm really looking forward to reading your opinions

Just read the linked article by Katherine Bertine about differences in technique and form Pro vs Amateur.

This is a topic I am extremely curious about and I'd love to know what other differences there might be. Errors amateurs make in training and racing that pros typically don't. Other specific form and technique problems (pedaling, shifting . . . ). Improper equipment choices. Anything.

Not sure how many of you use or follow Twitter, but Team Type 1 actually has live race updates on their Twitter page. At least they do today.

Amber Neben finished completed the Redlands Classic prologue with a time that was better than 83 men.

Is it possible for the best elite women to compete against men? Could they replace the least of the elite men?

Vote in the poll. Leave your thoughts either here or in the comments section of the linked post.

Doping Questions

Is there a set penalty for various offenses? Fist time? Second tme? Are all banned substances given equal penalties or are some more harshly thought of and dealt with?

I don't have time to really write about this until later tonight, though there is so much to say.

But, I would really love your feedback, either here or in the comments of the linked post, between now and then.

How will the break affect the overall situation? Lance personally? His relationship with Alberto? Astana's plans for the TdF?

Will Lance keep hanging back and domestiqe for Alberto?

For Levi?

What if Alberto one ups Lance and offers to ride in support of Lance?

Is Lance ready for that?

Can he bow out and save face?

Is Armstrong a cancer within Astana?

Is Contador getting a raw deal?

Is Astana self-destructing?

Should Armstrong be arrested for assaulting the LiveClean Devil?
