Elin chasing Tiger
Major + Greg Norman = Flop; Funk + Norman Shirt = Championship
Greg Norman was in second place, one stroke out of the lead headed into the final round in the US Senior Open. Would he finally claim a USGA championship that has eluded him in the past?
No. Fred Funk took control and never let anyone near him, shooting 20 under par 268 to win his second senior major tournament.
For Norman, it was the same old story at a major. He never got it going today and ended up shooting a final round 73. Running the number, had he shot that same score in the final round at Augusta in 1996, I believe that would have been good to get him in a playoff against Nick Faldo. Alas, it was another major failure for Norman.
Well at least someone didn't magically hole out from some crazy spot on the 18th hole and stick the knife to the guy.
Norman's Great White Shark logo shirt made it to the victory podium today as the new U.S. Senior Open champ Fred Funk wears shirts from Norman's company. Thanks to the NBC camera that pointed this out in the final round telecast. Come to think of it, I believe my wife, who knows nothing about Mr. Norman's past as a golfer, gave me one of his shirts a while back.
Props to him as a marketer.
Props to Fred Funk for a tremendous victory. As a follower of Funk' today, I spent more time watching the Senior Open than the Buick Open. I love watching Tiger Woods as much as everyone else does but I was more fired up for Fred Funk. When he was a regular on the PGA Tour, he was nicknamed "Poof, Poof" in contrast to Fred "Boom Boom" Couples.
Hopefully there will be more senior major wins for Fred Funk. As for Mr. Norman, I'm not a fan of his but it would be great for the Champions Tour if he made more appearances in the future. Maybe he might finally win one of these.
