From The Rumble Seat The Ultimate Georgia Tech Football Uniform Discussion.

Tech has worn white jerseys almost 75% of the time since 2002 despite Chan Gailey's best efforts to the contrary.

I am calling out all discussion on Georgia Tech football uniforms. We are going to finally settle on what uniform Georgia Tech should wear when a-holes like Wake Forest, NC State, and Auburn aren't in town. This is the uniform which statistically pulls victory from the jaws of defeat more times than not. We aren't discussing any crazy stuff like black or pearl or pink cancer awareness-type scenarios. We are talking about gold hats. We are talking white versus navy versus gold jerseys. We are talking white versus gold pants. We are talking black versus white shoes.

The first issue to settle is shoes. Black shoes win. Period. Ever since Georgia Tech switched from the all white shoes to all black or half and half, Tech has won 62% of its games. All white shoes only won 57% of their games from August 2002-October 2006. The switch occurred against UVA in 2006 on Throwback Thursday and it was the one of the few decisive victories we've seen against the Wahoos in 10 years. Black shoes or at least 50% black from now on. It is settled.

The second issue is debated on occasion but I'm settling it now. Georgia Tech wears gold helmets. Throwback Thursday was badass but we're not Oregon or Boise State or whoever. Georgia Tech is known for old gold helmets with a white "GT". If you want to wear a white helmet, buy one on eBay and wear it to the game. Our team has gold hats like Notre Dame, Florida State, Navy, and UCLA. It ain't broke so don't try to fix it.

The final two articles of clothing are the real meat of this argument. Shoes and hats are peripherals. Everyone really cares about the jerseys and in turn the pants. The first issue is overall winning percentage. If you were to rank the articles in terms of winning percentage from 2002-2011, it would go like this: #5 Navy Jerseys (0.00%), #4 White Pants (58.3%), #3 White Jerseys (60.4%), #2 Gold Pants (61.4%), and #1 Gold Jerseys (64.5%). Gold on gold, which has not been worn since probably ever reigns supreme. These numbers are deceptive. If you break down the pants and jerseys worn by home and road venue since 2002, you get the following chart:
Whitejersey2_medium
A white jersey and white pants combo wins the homefield award while the Chan Gailey home uniform of gold tops with white pants wins the road award (despite very few events involving gold tops in bowl games or on the road). What say you? Do we try some mix and match with our tops and pants in 2012 to mix up the mojo?

From The Rumble Seat ACC and SEC Alum Leading the Way in NFL Playoffs

A breakdown of touches in the 2012 NFL Playoffs by players' alma maters' conference affiliation!

If there were ever a doubt that the Southern football wasn't king, then the 2012 NFL Playoffs should put that rumor to bed. Alum from the ACC and SEC have accounted for 41% of all rushing attempts and 38% of all recepetions in the NFL Playoffs this season. Five of the twelve quarterbacks who threw a pass in the NFL Playoffs played on either an ACC or SEC squad in college. The two conferences are in a dead heat for most touchdowns and total yardage in the NFL Playoffs and it will come down to the Super Bowl to decide which conference's alum group reigns supreme in the 2012 Playoffs:
Allschool3_medium
Breaking down the stats by school shows a pretty interesting picture of the playoffs. Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Eli Manning are leading the way for their schools. Interestingly enough, Miami and Maryland are in the mix for most touchdowns in the Playoffs despite having no starting QB's on any of the NFL Playoff teams. Miami's running backs, receivers, and tight ends had a strong showing in the playoffs as well racking up over 700 yards on 100+ touches.
Allschool1_medium
The final table I compiled was a composite of ACC squads. GT fared pretty well with Will Heller, Calvin Johnson, and Demaryius Thomas. Duke, Wake, and Clemson did not fare so well.

One of the nation's toughest college football recruiting challenges may have just gotten a little bit easier...Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas' breakthrough effort Sunday in the Denver Broncos' 29-23 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't merely advance his team to the next round of the playoffs.

5 months ago Hokiesplat_tiny BirdGT 3 comments

The biggest question for Georgia Tech before the season started was who was going to replace the production of do-everything point guard Iman Shumpert, who jumped early for the NBA Draft. Truthfully, that's a hole no one's been able to fill just yet. But the Yellow Jackets have found a go-to scorer in Glen Rice, Jr., who put up an incredible 28 points against Duke and another 22 in the N.C. State upset. Rice has had some serious duds of games, including zero points in their surprising loss to Fordham and only five points in their depressing, worse-than-Maryland's whitewash against Alabama.

From The Rumble Seat Glen Rice, Jr. plays like a man in victory over NC State

Tech has played the best two games of its season at the onset of ACC play. Tech took Duke to the wire this past weekend and held off an NC State rally in Raleigh. Everyone knew Glen Rice, Jr. was the key cog for this team to succeed after the departures of Brian Oliver and Iman Shumpert but I don't think anyone expected Glen Rice to blow up in back to back ACC games. After averaging only 12.5 points per game in his first 11 games played, Rice has blown up Duke and NC State in back to back efforts averaging 25 points per game. Here's a look at his scoring efficiencies in losses, on the road, and in ACC play compared to the his total season effort:
Glenrice_medium
The way Tech has played in its past two games, I can easily see the Jackets knocking off UVA, Clemson, BC, and NC State. The future of this program under Gregory will be determined by how we handle road challenges in College Park, Chapel Hill, and Tallahassee. Any thoughts on last night's win?

Tech meets the Wolfpack tonight in Raleigh. The Wolfpack is 12-4 with wins over Maryland, Princeton, and Texas. Tech needs a conference W more than I need a dollar in my pocket. Tech hasn't won a road game outside the State of Georgia and tipoff is at 9:00PM on Raycom.

From The Rumble Seat Demaryius Thomas and Calvin Johnson leading ACC Alum in NFL Playoffs

You'll never make big plays in an option offense Part 2. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

In the 2011 NFL playoffs, 5,524 yards of total offense were accumulated in 4 wild card games. Over 72% of that yardage came from BCS conference alums. The SEC alums led all conferences with 1,561 yards of offense in the NFL wild card round. The ACC was second with 1,278. The B1G, Big 12, Pac 10, and Big East combined for 1,150 yards of offense. The top 10 schools based on offensive production are as follows:
Accnfl1_medium
With Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson out, the State of Georgia took a major hit in the playoff yardage race. Demaryius Thomas didn't hurt GT, however, with his monster game against the Steelers.

As far as points scored goes, the SEC won again. The SEC has racked up 99 offensive points including offensive touchdowns, PAT's, and FG's. I double counted receiving & passing TD's and I did not count the defensive TD for the Texans or the safety for the Falcons. The ACC was second with 66 points followed by Drew Brees the B1G's 41 points. The top 10 schools based on offensive points scored in the NFL Wildcard round are as follows:
Accnfl2_medium
As individuals, Calvin and Demaryius are leading all playoffs receivers with 211 and 204 receiving yards, respectively. The third best is Marques Colston out of Hofstra with 120 yards. Yes, Georgia Tech receivers dominated the first round. All passers were led by Drew Brees and all rushers were led by Arian Foster. The highest point total of the NFL Wildcard round on an individual level was Stafford with 24 points.

From The Rumble Seat What should Stephen Hill expect from the 2012 NFL Draft?

I hope everything works out for you bro. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Let's start with the basic statistics of I-A receivers taken in the NFL Draft. 124 college wide receivers have been drafted in the past four NFL Drafts. 84 of them were from BCS conferences (67.7%) while 13 of them were from the ACC (10.5%). The average college receiver was taken 126th overall (4th round) while the average ACC receiver was taken 90th overall (3rd round). The average receiver drafted from a I-A football team averaged 61 catches on the season, 879 yards, and 7 touchdowns. For comparison's sake, Demaryius Thomas had 46 catches, 1,154 yards, and 8 touchdowns. If you wish to continue, click the jump...
