The UW places 11th in 2008/2009 NACDA Learfield Sports Directors Cup!

First off, what is the NACDA Directors Cup? (The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) It's basically an association that awards universities and academic institutions a yearly award (The Director's Cup) based on athletic achievements throughout a calendar school year. It's normally broken down with a 1st semester- Fall; 2nd semester- Winter; and a 3rd semester Spring- at the end of every June, points are tabulated and the school with the highest computation of points earned- is awarded The Director's Cup. Stanford University practically has a monopoly on the Cup- winning like a ton of the Cups (I can find it only going back to the late 1990's). This year, the University of Washington Huskies just missed the top ten, but finishing a respectable 11th with a total of 1010.25- with tOSU just ahead of them in the 10th spot at 1015.80. (THANK YOU Husky Women Softball Team! WOOF!)

Here is some "cut/paste" of the official wording from the above linked (in title) site. Here ya go: NACDA serves as the professional association for those in the field of athletics administration. The largest association of collegiate athletics administrators, NACDA boasts a membership of more than 6,100 individuals and more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Members include athletics directors, associate and assistant athletics directors, conference commissioners and affiliate individuals or corporations. NACDA was founded in 1965. It had its origins at the First and Second National Conferences on Athletic Administration in Colleges and Universities, held in Louisville, Kentucky in 1959 and 1962. At the third conference, in 1965, in Washington, D.C., NACDA was officially founded and the Association held its inaugural Convention in 1966. The backbone of NACDA, the Foundation is the Association's educational arm which sponsors the clinics, workshops and seminars and manages the postgraduate scholarship programs.

There is a whole host of other great affiliations, causes, and purposes for the betterment of athletics, minorities and under-represented parties involved in academic/athletics at the JC up and through the university level of campuses throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. For additional info, go here.

I was reading USC Ripsit blog this morning and came across a Jun. 24 entry regarding the independent economic study on the USC. The independent economic impact report shows that the City of Los Angeles' largest private sector employer is one of California's major economic engines, helping to keep Southern California's economy thriving- to the tune of $503 million dollars on student spending alone!!!

Check it out, it's a great read.

Now I know The Bleacher Report isn't the most "quality" of football blogs or websites- the writers are usually the readers. But this particular write-up coincides with the wonderful work done by anh_sc79's post here at CC regarding conference strength and access to post season bowl games.

I'll tell you one thing, commenter "Husker Fan" is MY HERO. And he's a Nebraska Cornhusker uber-fan. Here's a part of one of his kind comments for 'SC, "USC has simply been shafted in a number of years. Voters and fans simply expect them to do 'more' than any other school due to their supposed 'weak' conference."

Give it a read, it's actually a pretty good article with carefree opinions given mostly by non-USC fans tooting our stellar 7 year run.

Earlier in the year, when I first came over to the UW Dawg Pound- I wrote a bit about my experiences viewing Coach Sark and Coach Holt from a fan's perspective, and giving you all glimpses of them from a personal relationship I've had with them. We bantered about wins/losses for the upcoming UW Huskies season and about what the new coaches will bring to the table once practices start up.

What was written by me have, for the most part come true. I said how much you all will be surprised by "access" the coaches will allow, how much "competition" will be a factor in practices and games, and how much of a turnaround the fitness will be required in order to play in both Coach Sark's and Coach Holt's schemes. I don't think I was too far off the mark.

Well, today- Tom Dienhart wrote on these very things for the UW football team. It is a great write-up and somthing that is a pretty good read. (there's a few digs at Coach Ty Willingham, too!). As much as their schedule is this year, one of the toughest in the country- I still feel a 4 - 6 win season is not out of reach. Go Dawgs!

Awesome Q&A with Coach Sark in SportingNews yesterday

Now that Spring practice has completed, I haven't really read all that much about Coach Sark's assessment and vision with Dawg football. This article in SportingNews.com was really special. Out here in Los Angeles, I don't get much coverage of UW. When I do get some needed-action on that front- I find it at Dawgman, Husky Digest and here at the UW Dawg Pound.

And I know we've all bantered about the potential wins and losses for UW football this year. So, I guess it's easy to say we'll win more than last year. Coach Sark doesn't give his prognostication as far as that's concerned, but - he sure as heck is a believer in the boys on the team. He knows he has a helluva quarterback in Jake Locker, it was nice to know he finds that he has 6-deep at receiver, some good tight-ends to fit his scheme, and a solid defense to work with. He also thinks that Chris Polk is gonna be something special. (one thing Coach Sark isn't, is an idealist. he's as pragmatic as they come, so for him to share a few good thoughts on the team in the way and manner in which he did, IS A BIG DEAL) Here's a refresher on what was being said and told:

1. "The whole thing with the spring, when we looked at practices 13, 14 and 15, we were way better than in practices one, two and three"

2. "The first half of the spring, so much of it was teaching just a style of play. This is how we want our quarterback to play. By the second half, it was just great. The ones on both sides of the ball, they just kept getting better and better. For Jake, the last seven practices were among the best football I've seen him play"

3. "One of the biggest issues was, there's no secret the guy's a great athlete. He could start for our defense if he wanted to. But we're trying to show him this thing is a marathon, not a sprint. We need him to start 13 games this year, not four or five."

4. " I think he (Jake) noticed that guys in practice started making bigger plays for him because of where he put the ball. They could catch and run instead of having to twist around to make the catch. He's taken velocity off the ball. He's more comfortable throwing in the pocket with guys around him. And, working with coach (Doug) Nussmeier, we've really hammered home the footwork side of the game."

There's a bunch more good stuff in this interview. Hope all of you guys are enjoying the onset of the summer days before us. Hope you're having a great vacation in the Carribbean, John.

Give this link a look-see, I think y'all will enjoy it!
