Wagner to Return to Braves

8:50 am April 1, 2011, by Sidney Finch

WASHINGTON- Former Braves closer Billy Wagner has joined the Atlanta ballclub in Washington DC and will begin throwing side sessions preparation to return as the team’s closer in as early as two weeks. Wagner, who neglected to file his retirement papers with the MLB Player’s Union prior to the start of the season, was released by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday to make room on the team’s 25-man roster, however the veteran lefty was quoted Friday as saying "I enjoy spending time with my family, but I can’t stand sitting by while I know I still have something left." "I’ve talked with Sarah, and she’s totally supportive of my decision."

The Braves have recently named lefty Johnny Venters and rookie flamethrower Craig Kimbrel as co-closers for the team, however in a statement made Friday morning, Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez said "the team needs Billy’s presence at the end of the game, plain and simple." "I have full confidence in Johnny and Craig, but it really comes down to experience."

The Braves exercised the team’s right to Wagner’s services by way of a deal that was completed with the player’s union as part of the pitcher’s severance from the team.

"We’re ready to have him back and throwing" braves 3rd baseman Chipper Jones said. "He’s a great clubhouse guy and a force in the ninth inning."

Middle reliever Christian Martinez is expected to be optioned to AAA Gwinnett upon Wagner’s return.

A link from Big League Stew showing Chipper, Freddi, Logan Shaver, and Moylan becoming Delta agents.

This article poses the question of how much Rasmus would garner. The proposed Braves haul seems kind of steep to me...

At least we don't have this guy playing second... I love you Brooksy, but I hope Glaus starts at third tonight.

Not to be irreverent, but I thought this might lighten the mood around here in the wake of Chipper's injury. I was trolling around over at Amazin Avenue and came across this gem.
I must admit my intention was to discover some Chipper bashing to fuel my hatred for the Mets, but in actuallity, I saw nothing but classy statements regarding the remarkability of Chipper's carreer and best wishes for his recovery.

Who is Dave? Does anybody know why our quirky relief wizard decided to name his changeup Dave?

I thought someone might have already posted this by now, but since I'm on my lunch break, I thought I'd share.
It's a shame that Reid only got 25 ABs with a team with a soul.
Also, I post this with the hope that someone will comment with the Royce Ring picture of years past.

A pretty good interview especially considering that all they talk about on the radio in Birmingham is college football. Discusses Frenchy, Smoltz, and the end of Murph's career.

Talking Chop Is anything sacred?

I remain unphased by the rumors that the Red Sox and Tigers may be interested in John Smoltz.  I assume this is a ploy by Smoltzie's agents to drive up his price or get the Braves to move faster.

On the other hand, I recently had a discussion with a fellow Braves fan-lifer, who doesn't like the franchise's history with regard to career Braves players.  He cites that Hank Aaron, Dale Murphy, Eddie Matthews, Phil Neikro, etc. have all finished their careers with other teams.  It seems like any player who begins his career with the Braves inevitably is let go in the final years of his career.  (I welcome anyone who can find a player in history who has spent the entirety of his carrer with the Braves.)

All that being said, I realize management is much different than it was while these players were active, but the trend still leaves me uneasy. Should we be concerned in the least?  Could the unthinkable happen?  Could John Smoltz end his career in another uniform?

Talking Chop Andruw Jones might ask for a trade...

...his team of choice?  Would it suprise anyone if he wanted to return to the Braves?  Rumor and speculation around Dodgers blogs is that Andruw will want to start in center next year for the Dodgers (yeah, right) or ask for a trade.  Personally, I don't know if I can take anymore heartbreak from one of my favorite Braves of yesteryear, but would the Braves bite on taking a huge chance on a discounted Andruw bouncing back if he returned home?  I don't know, my head says "no," but my heart says "why not?"  Any opinions?

Jones has told friends that he plans to approach the Dodgers and ask them to trade him. After hiding their excitement, the Dodgers will then have to find a suitor and determine how much of the $22.1 million they still owe him that they'll have to eat.

Talking Chop Conor Jackson

I'm not trying to jump the gun here, but I'd like to know what's going through the Diamondbacks' heads with regard to the possible Jackson/ Tex deal.

Can anybody tell me what's up with Conor Jackson?  From the small sample of stats I've seen he looks like a pretty stellar prefomer, but I was simply wondering if any stat heads (hint hint Beard) could tell me what he's projected to do and how long he has left on his contract, etc.

I was also curious to see why the D'backs would want to make this deal anyway.  It seems to me that any power numbers and average gained by Tex would be lost by Jackson.  I would like to see it happen, but it just kinda seems like a wash for Arizona.

Opinions?... GO!
