What constitutes goaltender interference these days?

To break from our favorite topic of predicting the demise of the upstart Avs for a bit here, I have witnessed a disturbing trend in this year's games of goalies getting run, tackled, backed into, pushed into the net, hacked with sticks, guys standing with both feet in their crease butt to mask .... all without any calls of goaltender interference. I'm actually starting to miss the "in the crease" rule.

Is it just me or are the refs just not calling goaltender interference this season? Seems like a very dangerous development. Does anyone think it is some sort of edict from the NHL front office to try to increase scoring?

Yelle to Wings?

Buried deep in the comments of another riveting blog over at Excluding Zetterberg, some nice fellow going by CaptNorris5 had the following idea:

I think one of the issues that we’ve had trouble with has been complacency. The kids need to learn how to skate with the hate. Therefore, I suggest we claime Stephanne Yelle from waivers. For $500k we can have a skater from the other side of the Rivalry. He’ll play only in practice. Todd Bertuzzi and Brad May will use him to run a murder clinic for some of the less-hungry younguns on the team. Sobotka can keep him chained up in the Zamboni tunnel and drag him onto the ice during intermissions. Fans can then pelt him with hockey pucks. First one to make him cough blood gets a signed jersey!

Why Yelle, for crise sakes? Wtf did he ever do to anyone wearing the wheel? Now, if we were to post something similar about Draper, Maltby, McAsshole, May, Bertuzzi, Osgood, Holmstrom, Lapointe, etc. etc. etc. ... it would be understandable. But Yelle?

Avs recall Chris Durno

Watching Hensuck Arnason around for around 7 minutes against the wheel the other night, and seeing that they had called up Brian "We'llsee why he is a career minor leaguer at best" Willsie, I couldn't help but wonder, "Why not Durno?" The guy is big, looks like he can skate and has shown some skill, and looked pretty good during his brief stints with the Avs last season. Also, he's leading the Monsters in scoring with 6 goals and 3 assists in 8 games.

So I go to the LEM website and look at the team stats, and Durno has an "X" next to his name. Like other guys the Avs have recalled, meaning he's not on the LEM active roster. Is he hurt or has he been recalled? I'd love to see him given a shot over Hensuck and Willsie.

Update: Dater confirms in his blog that Durno has been called up. I guess the LEM website beat him to the scoop, however.

Fellow Av fans and MHHers, I have a personal dilemma and am looking for some advice. This post is mostly OT, but I can tie it in with the Avs to a degree.

My cell phone service, via Qwest, is about to go silent at of the end of this month. With it, I would imagine, would be my circa 1995 cell phone that does little else other than make and receive calls. So I'm thinking of taking the plunge into one of those fancy phones that everyone else has, a crackberry or an iphone or some other such thing.

But I'm still kind of cheap, so have been looking into my service options. Seems like no matter what company you go through, for a plan with two phones someone's going to dig into your pocket each month of a minimum of around $70. Without bells and whistles. So, if I'm going to take the plunge and get a fancy phone, I'd be looking at extra money for web access, and extra money for messaging, etc. etc.

So, how does this tie into the Avs? Well, if I pay up the wazzoo for unlimited web access and unlimited messaging, I guess I could start twittering or tweeting or whatever the hell you call it. I know some of you folks have dabbled with this, and Dater is now dabbling as well. I would imagine that if I take the full plunge I would end up using the messaging capability, tied in with twitter or whatever, to obsess over the Avs like I do with web access now. Is it worth it? Do you end up linked in with other tweeters so that you get instant phone updates from them based on whatever their twittering on about? And while I'm asking questions, what are good phones and providers?

Joe Sakic Night MHH Preunion at Old C's

OK, since Mike @ MHH can't do this, and DDC is too jealous to do this, and Joe is too busy learning how to chase ambulances to do this, here is a new thread for the MHHers going to Joe Sakic night. As a fanpost instead of a fanshot.

I think a rough count so far of folks planning on meeting at Old C's is up to about 20. Jibbles may look into reserving some space if Old C's will do that. Happy Hour is from 3-6 PM and includes some half priced appetizers and $1 off of drafts. I'm thinking of trying to get there by around 4:30 to beat the rush. Everyone needs to be in their seats at the Can before 6:45 to honor our captain.

Excluding Zetterberg: They love me!

They really, really, love me! Even in the hockey doldrums of summer, it seems as if the toothless 19 over at EZ just can't get me out of their collective craniums. In part of a riveting series by C3PO Bill, in which the toothless are being asked to rank their top 10 current rivals, I was browsing through the comments and found .... of all things .... me!

In one comment, some nice fellow named Osrt (evidently vowels, along with paychecks, are in short supply among RW fans) had the following to say:

Denver (dead last, because they even suck at sucking.)

Agreed. I don’t know anything about this team besides Sakic retiring their last shred of dignity. Dater is the pedobear and Bob from Boulder needs to meet Bertuzzi after talking isht, not owning up and fellating himself with joy after this year’s finals.

Now, don't credit Osrty with the clever "Denver" thing. That is C3PO Bill's own creation, a clever play on the fact that our team plays in Denver, yet goes by the name of our state. Oh my sides .... it just never gets old, does it? But Osrty wishes me bodily harm from Big Bad Bert? Should I watch my backside? Or look left and right for the roundhouse sucker punch that is sure to come? Oh well, glad Osrty, C3PO Bill, and the gang have such a worthy new idol.

Now, I was actually fine and even a little bit amused by the ramblings of our friend Osrt. However, I just had to scroll down some more to find the ramblings of some batman loving, ass kissing, freak who claims to be an Av fan. This is what "AvsRock" had to say:

BTW, even Avs fans can’t stand Bob from Boulder. Boulder is a different planet and an embarassment to most in Colorado.

Yes, AvsRock, Avs fans can't stand me. They would, however, surely worship an ass kicking Benedict Arnold such as yourself.

So, what do our friends at WCG think of Kyle Orton?

I created a poll over at WCG to get a feel for what they thought of our new starting QB. A link to the fan post and poll is here. Please feel free to go over there and take a look.

An overwhelming majority of the nice folks over there think Kyle Orton is an average QB and a game manager. I wonder if I would have been better off leaving out the descriptions in the answers altogether? Maybe some people would see "game manager" as less than average … more of a put down? Don’t know. Live and learn, I guess. One person put him in the top 10 (and I stretched it to 10 to give him a chance). Only 3 people (and I was not one of them) said he isn’t a starter in the NFL. And a smattering of folks think he is either above average or below average.

Some of the comments were also interesting (good often accompanying bad):

The good:

- he is very good at the short passing game ….. (snipped bad) ….. but he usually makes good decisions
- He is an intellegent QB
- he can win with a good defense and running game
- but he can chuck it pretty far
- but he wins over his teammates, he plays hard and he is capable of making plays to win games
- Orton may not lose you too many games,
- he is smart and makes good decisions

The bad:

- He has some trouble with Deep Ball accuracy
- if you get involved in a shoot out Kyle is not your man
- his physical skills limit his overall performance
- If you quickly find youreself down by 10-14 points, you might want to see if your wife has any projects around the house
- he is the master of the Dump off screen on third and forever
- but he’s not real accurate after 25 yards
- I don’t think Denver is a place that he’ll do particularly well unless the defense really steps it up
- Orton’s best passing performances have always come against the Lions. He’s not talented enough to regularly extend the play or make things happen when things break down. And the inaccuracy of his deep throws will drive you nuts.
