I just saw in the Statesman that Shane Dronett was found dead in his Atlanta home. He was 38 years old. Man, this guy was a monster... Played on the late 80's early 90's McWilliams era Horns. Gabriel has blown his horn, my friend. Hook 'em, Gator!!

Check out Dronett in this YouTube vid (1990 Houston game) at the 1:53 mark he knocks Klingler on his Run & Shoot ASS!!

Hook Em Horns!!

Two people dead in aftermath of the game.

AP/CNNSI reports "A man and woman were shot dead after an argument that witnesses said started over an Alabama-LSU football game."

Here's the text:

The Conecuh County sheriff's office identified the victims as Dennis James Smith, 41, and Donna Kaye Hall Smith, 39, of Brewton. The two were shot to death about 7 p.m. Saturday in the rural community of Owassa in southern Alabama.

Michael W. Williams, 28, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder over the shooting at his home, where he had watched the game. He was being held Monday without bond. A sheriff's investigator handling the case did not know if he had an attorney.

An investigator said Monday that people watching the game at Williams' home said the dispute was over the game, which Alabama won 27-21 in overtime Saturday, but an investigation into the motive was not complete. The investigator also said alcohol may have been a factor.

According to witness accounts to investigators, Dennis Smith, an LSU fan, called Williams, an Alabama fan, after the game, and the Smiths then went to Williams' home, where a physical altercation led to the shooting.

Investigators said Dennis Smith had a pistol and Williams had a shotgun and fired.

Authorities said Donna Smith was a relative of Williams' girlfriend.

Relatives of both the victims and the suspect either declined comment or did not immediately return phone messages Monday from The Associated Press.

Geez... The only time I've ever thought about shooting someone is when I thought about committing suicide after the UCLA game in 1996. These people give "redneck" a bad name.

So, I'm reading all these missives related to the big game this weekend while I'm eating lunch.

And I'm thinking to myself: "Bombilla, you really should eat smaller portions for lunch. Oh, and don't worry about Colt - he's a big boy and can take care of himself."

And then I remember that I have a staff meeting in 45 mins and I ain't ready for it. And right when I start collecting my notes, etc together for the meeting I start thinking to myself: "Oh, shit! Ullman isn't ready for this game!"

And then I start rubbing my temples while muttering "Serenity now...serenity now...". My eyes are closed tight, and I see stars in all the black and I see a very hazy image that is both familiar and terrifying. I begin to sweat, my hands begin to tremble, my balls are shrinking as the image comes into focus: Bubble Screen! My lip quivers. My stomach churns. My telephone rings: My boss says I'm late!

I grab my notes, my folders, my cell phone, my pack of smokes, and then for some reason a quote from the Book of Matthew floats along the rapids of my stream of consciousness...

"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day." Matthew 6:34

And then as my office door closes I realize I just left my keys on my desk. The door is locked, and I can't get back inside without assistance. And it hits me:

It's OU week, and I'm not drinking enough.

What kind of lame poll is that?

Which is a tougher game: OU or Mizzou? (See today's poll question)

I mean, come on. That's like asking a guy to justify his liking a particular beer over another.

Oh dammit...now I have to type 75 words before I can publish this extremely important poll. Ernest Hemingway would hate this rule. Here was a man who said, "The hardest thing to write is the one true sentence." Indeed. He didn't need no damn 75 words to ask the following question: One barrel or both?

Oh, wait...that's not the question. Here's the question:

What's more painful?

 <fieldset class="poll-box">

145 votes

22%

42 votes

The Adventures of Bombilla, Jr.

Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying About The Consistency of Poop

Gentlemen (dunno if there's ladies here), Behold... My Son, Bombilla, Jr.

Born this past June, and weighed (and I'm actually serious here) 9 lbs 11oz and was 23-in long. He's my big boy. He's almost 3 months old now, and we just finished watching our first Horns game last weekend with grandpa.

Blah blah blah. Yeah...I know. Boring.

But there's a reason why I write these words. Y'all are like my extended family. A family that I've grown to appreciate, respect, and yell at. A family that is more interested in discussing the fine points of Rodriguezezezzz A-11 offense scheme (or joke) while I keep trying to think of another word for "erection" or "diarrhea" or "love". Love that's what it's all about, isn't it? Love and football. And changing diapers.

I can do it with one hand, now: change diapers. I am the sensei of poop. I can tell the difference between a seismic event and butt murmurs. I know when the big one is coming before it enters his little intestine. I have become comfortable with poop.

Which is why I think I'm going to be able to handle this season. I have mellowed, fellows. Junior's granddad (my daddy) actually noticed that the television was intact even after the fourth FRIGGIN' BUBBLE SCREEN, the EIGHTEENTH EAST/WEST PASS, another DAMN WHATEVER THE HELL THAT PLAY IS THAT ANNOYS THE SHIT OUT OF ME!!! ...but I'm cool, now. Like a cucumber. I'm older now, and wiser. Sensitive, even, and a bit melancholy. I'm actually more like cucumber that's been sitting in a jar of sun tea on the deck of an aircraft carrier. A limp, tea-stained, fully caffeinated, deaf cucumber. What does that mean? Hell, I don't know. But you read it, and now you own a part of my own confusion so eat it, young man.

Anyway, this rambling should be considered a preface to the life and times of my youngest son. It is intended to track the growth, development, and indoctrination of my littlest Longhorn.

I will call him "Junior" in these missives.

I actually wanted to name him "Vince Godzilla", but this was dismissed by my narrow-minded wife. Pity.

Where's The Burnt Orange?

School started and I don't see enough Burnt Orange!

Let me preface this missive by mentioning that, as some of you may know, I actually work on campus (here in Austin).

So, I've been stoked all week - IT'S GAME WEEK, BABY!!! Last night before I went to bed I pulled out my favorite jersey, that being #10. It will be worn today and tomorrow, and then retired. I will place it in a box with moth balls so that I can give it to my oldest son, Blake, on his 16 bday. I do this, of course, because #10 is being "hung in the rafters" tomorrow before the game.

Now...as I've mentioned, I'm stoked because the first game is tomorrow. So I'm up early. I feed my newborn boy, eat breakfast, shower, shave, and get dressed in my khaki slacks and my well-worn #10 jersey. I do this even though it may look goofy when I walk into my 8:30am meeting at the dean's office, but everyone knows...IT'S GAME DAY-EVE, BABY!!! WHOOOO!!! It's expected, and acceptable.

I park my car in the garage and head out towards my building. School started on Wednesday so the campus takes on that Fort Worth Stockyards feel as the kids amble to their classes. And, all the while I have this big smile on my face because IT'S THE DAY BEFORE GAME DAY, BABY!!! I half expect VY to rappel down the side of RLM, smack my giant pasty ass and start dancing while shouting "Where dem Horns at?!!" Yes...it's a long walk to the building.

And then I notice something...

NO ONE IS WEARING BURNT ORANGE!

Pathetic. Just...pathetic.
