I became a sports addict at the age of 13 when all three of my California teams (Raiders, Ducks, Angels) got to to Superbowl, Stanley Cup Finals and World Series all in the same 9 month period. Unfortunately only the Angels were victorious in claiming a world championship, however my life was forever changed as sports started to dominate my other hobbies. Prior to this time, I had grown up next door to a ex-Raiderette and had gone to Angels and Ducks games but I was just too young to understand the sports. With the concurrent success of my three favorite teams, I quickly became more than just a fan, but an avid enthusiast.
Currently I am a Junior at the University of Colorado at Boulder and have been thrust into the mockery that is Colorado sports fans. The fans here are just so snobby and obsessively fair-weather that it has really turned me off and made me despise the various professional sports teams in this state. However, as an economics major here who has studied various topics in statistics and econometrics, I hope one day to be able to apply my statistical knowledge to sports through some sort of econometric model. I am amazed by the various statistics and predicting abilities accompanied by these statistics. I have played around with some models predicting various player statistical forecasts but just don't have the time or means to create an accurate model. There are so many unmeasurable statistics that cause the error variance of these models to dominate the rest of the model. Without a massive database of the various variables that affect player performance it is not feasible at this time for me to work on these fascinating models.
