Are the Cowboys cheap?
From Ross Tucker, ex-NFL / Cowboys player: (in the Q&A section below the main article):
A: ...yes, I have said that the Cowboys were the only team of five I played for that I recall charging me via payroll deduction for my helmet. I believe it was $200. I was told that Jerry Jones looks at equipment as team property, and if a player wants it, he has to purchase it. I'm a business owner, so on some level I get it, but I was pretty surprised, given how much money the Cowboys make. They also were the only team that deducted money for lunch every week during the season, which was even more astonishing to me.
What's the demand for the "All 22" view?
Came across some interesting articles on the NFL's views on providing the All -22 view of the playing field. Clearly they cannot argue technology is an impediment with HD wide-screen feeds being streets in front of the old NTSC 4:3 views.

The real reason for the improved Defence this season: tackling
Visiting the PFF site, I came across this story of the season on missed tackles. While the story features the best (49'ers) and worst (Tampa) - the next best and worst were also of interest.
Be nervous: this is the Skins
I understand why everyone is super confident going into the Skins game expecting a BIlls style blowout – BUT when we play the Skins, the "wrong" team often loses. Even more interesting is that when the Skins and Boys play in the season opener, the loser has gone to the Superbowl. Look at this history:
PFF summary of 'Niners game: Miles high; Free expensive
PFF provided a summary of the 49'ers game.
Austin narrowly beat out Romo for the game ball, but Free was given a -5.6 grade, which on their scoring system is pretty bad.

NFL History Lesson: How long does it take a Head Coach to win a Superbowl?
I analyzed how long each SB coach took to win their first Super Bowl with their team.
The 45 Super Bowls to date have been won by 28 coaches. 16 coaches won only 1, 8 won 2 (including Landry, JJ, Parcells and Lombardi), 3 have won 3 (Walsh, Gibbs, Belichick) and only Chuck Noll has won 4.
I have seen talk in the blog about how it's now newer coaches that are winning Super Bowls. This has always been the case. Out of those 28 coaches, 54% won their Super Bowl in their first 3 seasons with the team. Only 3 Super Bowls have been won by coaches beyond their 6th season.
The first 14 coaches averaged 4.1 years tenure for their first win, and the next 14 averaged 4.0. So no statistically significant shift over this time (if you take the two outliers out, Landry and Cowher, these averages fall to 3.5 and 3.2 years respectively).

Cowboys Coaches - best in the NFC East
The MSP Cowboys Annual has a great section on the Cowboys coaches, with in-depth reviews of JG, Ryan and his defensive staff, Woicik and Jimmy Robinson (great work by our BTB bloggers BTW).
This got me thinking - how does our staff stack up against the rest of the NFC East?

Another 'Boy in Bear-land - this time the Barbarian
MB III joining Roy W at the Bears. MB seems a good fit with the smashmouth style of the Bears (that's assuming he still has it....)
NFL commissioner on Jerry Jones: I'm not sure this deal could have gotten done without him'
Nice little JJ slideshow too....
Stephen Bowen changes to a more Boys friendly agent?
Not normally that newsworthy, but given Rob Ryan's apparent enthuisiasm for Bowen's abilities this is probably good news.
Their agency covers Ware, Witten, James - so have a good history with the Boys.
(Also cover Spears and Free so they hopefully will be spending plenty of time at the ranch....)
Tony Romo has tells in his game?
Heard Everson Walls interview on Galloway where he stated that there is rumor that won't go away that Romo has "tells" in his game that he has not been able to get rid of. I searched online and Walls article was the only thing that came up.
So BTB bloggers - any of you heard this rumor before? Might explain some of the opposition comments about the offense being predictable...
Nice piece on the Red Headed Genius....
Overall very positive.
Draft Do-Over : What would you have done differently?
This is your opportunity to fix the mistakes Jerry and Co made....
Alternative list 10 biggest draft successes
Unable to figure out how to fix the table in the comments so I have laid it out as a fanpost below.
Did Jason turn the heat off?
Cold showers in $1.2B stadium? I can understand in the visiting rooms, but for the home team?
I reckon the red-headed genius has turned off the hot water to toughen up the players.
I don't care who wins the Super Bowl ... as long as it's not the Steelers
While we are 8-6 in Conference Championship games (despite the Danny White years), to their 8-7, they have converted 6 of their 7 chances so far, to our 5. While I am no big fan of the Packers, their many defeats to the Boys in the '90s and my affinity for cheese has softened my heart somewhat (and thickened my veins). But mostly I just hate the Steelers and their potential to move ahead of the Cowboys as the greatest franchise of the Super Bowl era. While I would potentially swap owners, and maybe a safety or two, it still doesn't make me hate them any less.
Our one "big" FA acquisition should be at Safety: Michael Huff
Unlike the draft - where I think BPA is the primary guiding principle - FA acquisitions should be driven by need. So if we could make ONE big FA acquisition this year (CBA allowing) - what position and who would it be?
There are three positions that warrant consideration for a major FA acquisition: OL, CB, S.
QB, TE, WR, RB, OLB clearly do not warrant the expenditure of a major FA acquisition. We have the dominant NT that the Ryan's look for and a 3-4 DE is not a position in this scheme that warrants a high-end signing. K - not going down that road again! (Vandershank). You could make an argument for ILB, but with Lee developing its a lower priority.

Jason G: Machiavellian or loyal to a fault? Is this our guy?
There may be conspiracy theorists among you who might suggest JG wasn't necessarily looking to get the best performance out of his offence as Wade was sinking. That he was just as much to blame as Wade and shouldn't have been rewarded for his poor performance.
To me, this is a guy who was loyal to a fault. That played his role as 2IC and always supported his leader. He never tried to take any lime-light, never played the rah-rah guy on the sideline like he did last night. From what we now understand of how practices are run, JG clearly didn't agree with how things were run, but never criticised or undermined his head coach. Wade set the tone and JG did his best to operate within that framework.
There were a few posters suggesting that JG wasn't popular with the players. This is a guy who had as many (if not more) defensive players come up to congratulate him on his win. These were players who were supposedly playing to try to keep Wade his job.
This is a guy that took a 1-7 team that had lost all heart and got them playing with fire again. They look like they are having fun again. When have you seen Scandrick make a tackle in the backfield like that? The O-line block like that? Even Marty B with a great catch and run? And to give the other coaches their props too - Eli looked genuinely confused trying to get a pre-snap read several times last night. And they faced adversity several times during the game - they could have easily folded - but kept punching back .
(Granted playing a team that did a fantastic impression of the Dallas Cowboys of the past 8 games - a lot more more yards than points; critical penalties that negated TDs and big gains; silly procedural penalties and errors from basic things like poor snaps and trying to do too much - like picking up a ball on your 20 instead of falling on it when you had the chance.)
Fan Poll: Interim coach - do we need one - and who?
It is 100% clear that Wade is gone at the end of this season. Question is should he coach out the balance of the year - and if not - who takes over? I am curious as to what other fans think.
Let's Tank The Season
I am not suggesting we deliberately lose games, but we should start playing to set up 2011. And this means not being afraid to lose games while testing changes for next year.

Who should be our Nickel LB?
This story from Josh Ellis indicates what we all know - we don't really want Brooking and/or Bradie James on the field on every 3rd down - or at least the passing ones.
Relax, It was the Skins game. Loser goes to the Superbowl.
I understand why everyone has gone all Chicken Little but this was the Skins game – the “wrong” team usually loses. Even more interesting is that when the Skins and Boys play in the season opener, the loser has gone to the Superbowl. Look at this history:

Best and Worst Cowboy Tacklers
Football Outsiders have done some analysis of broken tacklers for both LB's and DB's. Unfortunately its an insider article so you won't be able to see the whole thing if you are not a member.
But just a quick summary of the Cowboy highlights:

Sporting News picks Boys to lose to Jets in SB XXXV
Reasons for Cowboys: continuity and "statement season" from Romo. Plus desire to be first home field SB team (not sure how they reconcile home field with a loss though).
So Sicko's a Cowboy....
At least so far - I have a hard time seeing how he is going to make the 53 man roster.
First Post-Draft Cuts: Henderson / Hovan of interest?
Seems a few NFL teams aren't worried about being as "nice" as Jerry and have released their veterans following drafting their potential replacements (rather than before - and then not drafting their replacements....)
Cowboys Biggest Draft Needs - by Position
Let me preface this by saying that I am a believer in the BPA theory – there is no point reaching for a position of need. However, that needs to be done in the context of an overall framework.
The Dallas War Room - an ESPN in-depth profile
ESPN has a pretty in-depth profile of the people in the Cowboys war-room on draft day and the role they play in the decision-making. The main ones you know very well - but a few I hadn't heard much about. Most important 3 days of the year for many of them.
I particularly recommend the profiles and little anecdotes on the in-animate objects in the room:
- the board (and how coaches would sneak in an move their favourite players up the rankings)
- the computer ("I bow to the machine")
- the books (the Mel Renfro storry - imagine how long the draft would take without time limits....)

The Dallas Cowboys – All-Undrafted Team
With all this focus on the draft I thought it worth noting that the Cowboys have a strong history of picking up undrafted free agents. There are some impressive names here: Harris, Walls, Pearson, Newton, Green. Interesting that arguably the two biggest Cowboy "snubs" for the HOF (Harris and Pearson) were both UDFAs - makes you wonder if lack of College stardom counts against them.
