Talking Chop What's Your Braves Story? Poll: How You Became A Fan

It is always interesting to hear people's "Braves Stories". How someone became a Braves fan or why their love for the Braves is so strong. Is there a particular moment in Braves history that stands out to you more than another? Some of us were born into families that loved the Braves. Others became fans while the Braves were being played on TBS every day. Then there are some that may be Braves fans because of their string of success in the 90s and early 2000s. I'd like to hear what your Braves story is and how you because a Braves fan. I've included a poll asking how you became a Braves fan.

Talking Chop Opinion Poll: Head Coach's effect on winning games

In which professional sport does the Head Coach have the least effect on the team and winning games? I have always had this debate with a number of sports fans and I will hold my opinion to myself so not to effect one's individual opinion on the question. I do believe their are some sports where the team would survive without even having a head coach. Let me know what you think by answering the poll and then we can have a nice little debate as to why you might feel that way. Thanks

Peachtree Hoops Is Atlanta A Bad Sports City?

I don't know if any of you saw the bit on 11Alive after the Super Bowl. They addressed the national media's perception that Atlanta is a "Bad Sports Town". But they offered some nice feedback on why we may be perceived this way. Here are some bullet points for what they had to saw.

Josh has been playing more consistent basketball lately and it may be worthy of an All-Star bid. Lets hope he keeps up the good work.

Jeff Schultz gets to the bottom of why the scoreboards at Phillips Arena are no longer in use. He seems to get the run around until they come up with a, not so clear, clear answer. Typical Spirit Group workings here.

Peachtree Hoops John Hollinger Ranking of Hawks: Debunked

John (losing credibility by the second) Hollinger has the Hawks ranked number 9 in the Eastern Conference for 2011-2012. He claims that the loss of Jamal Crawford with the improvement of other teams will push the Hawks out of a playoff spot. Let's just take a look at the Hawks bench in general to debunk Hollinger's ranking. Going by Hollinger's PER alone shows that the 11-12' Hawks bench, as a whole, is better than last years.

2010-2011 Bench

- Teague

- Crawford

- Mo Evans

- Josh Powell

- Pachulia

2011-2012

- Hinrich/Pargo

- Sy

- McGrady

- Radmanovic

- Pachulia

Peachtree Hoops Helping Dwight get to L.A. and Josh out of town.

So I've had a lot of time on my hands today and since Dec. 9 is getting closer and the possibility of a ton of trades and signings I went to the NBA Trade Machine. Here is what I propose: Let's help Dwight Howard and Chris Paul join forces in L.A. and get Josh Smith out! Here is how we do it:

Four team trade between: Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, LA Lakers, and New Orleans Hornets

Teams Receive

Atlanta Hawks: Andrew Bynum, P. Ewing Jr, and Q. Richardson

New Orleans Hornets: Josh Smith, Jameer Nelson

L.A. Lakers: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard

Orlando Magic: Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Kirk Hinrich

Atlanta Hawks Outlook:

This immediately improves the Hawks. We now have a legit center, deeper bench while cutting money, and get Josh Smith out of town. The Hawks now have a balanced lineup and money clear to fill out the roster.

Starting Five: Jeff Teague, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Al Horford, Andrew Bynum

Bench: Pape Sy, Q. Richardson, P. Ewing Jr., Z. Pachulia, M. Rolle, and Keith Benson

New Orleans Hornets Outlook:

This allows the Hornets to get Chris Paul out of town while getting some good pieces in return. They may loose David West this off-season and Josh Smith could step in to take his place. The Hornets will continue to be highly competitive and a playoff team with these additions. Their defense would be one of the best.

Starting Five: Jameer Nelson, ?SG?, Trevor Ariza, Josh Smith, Emeka Okafor

Bench: Jarrett Jack, D. Andersen, Q. Pondexter,

Los Angeles Lakers Outlook:

Allows the Lakers to create their own version of the Big 3 while getting exactly what they desire. The Lakers have long sought after Dwight Howard and Chris Paul, now they have both. 3 future HOFers playing together with a shot to create their own dynasty. The Lakers give up a lot of key pieces, but that is the price you pay for perennial MVP candidates.

Starting Five: Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, ?Power Forward?, Dwight Howard

Bench: Luke Walton, Steve Blake, Derek Fisher, D. Ebanks, D. Caracter

Orlando Magic Outlook:

Allows the Magic to give Dwight Howard what he wants and get out of Orlando and on a perennial Title contender. Dwight seems to be following the path of Shaq and this trade keeps him on track. The Magic loose Dwight Howard and Q. Richardson, but gain a lot of talent in return that will make them very deep. The Magic will continue to be a playoff team in the East with this trade.

Starting Five: Kirk Hinrich, J.J. Redick, Hedo Turkoglu, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol

Bench: Chris Duhon, Gilbert Arenas, R. Anderson, Brandon Bass, Daniel Orton, D. Liggins

Peachtree Hoops John Hollinger Trade Scenario

Hawks Receive: Chris Paul, Trevor Ariza, Jarrett Jack, and Emeka Okafor

Hornets Receive: Al Horford, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Kirk Hinrich, and Jeff Teague

Per John Hollinger Insider Post:

Paul wanted to come to Atlanta in the infamous 2005 draft that saw the Hawks instead select Marvin Williams, and our Chris Broussard just reported that Atlanta is still on the list.

So allow me to speak for all Atlantans for a second:

HE'D CONSIDER US!!! HE SAID HE'D CONSIDER US!!!!

Now that we have that out of the way ... it's highly unlikely CP is coming to Atlanta, given that the team is arguably on even shakier financial footing than the Hornets and the Hawks would likely have to trade their best young assets to get him. The best-case scenario for the Hawks is for the deal to cost them only one of Horford and Smith and not both, but it seems like that bid would easily be trumped by some of the others above.

You'll excuse the locals for getting all geeked up about this though, as it's the first time a superstar mentioned wanting to play here since Mt. Mutombo arrived nearly two decades ago.

Peachtree Hoops Thanks for another great year writers!

I wanted to take the the time to thank all of the mangers/writers for Peachtree Hoops. You all do a great job of reporting information on the Hawks and giving us inside information. The work done on the blog this year was the BEST it's ever been. It has to be one of the best (if not the best) NBA sports blogs out there. I have to admit that Peachtreehoops.com is the first website a check when click onto the internet. Although we may not all agree with the opinions of one another or some of us are more negative than others, we all have one same interest and desire and that is the Hawks and for the Hawks to be a Championship team. Throughout the course of year we have gone through the ups and downs of the season together as Hawks fans and bloggers. It has been a great year and I look forward to it again next year. Thanks again to all the guys involved with this website: Kris Willis, Jason Walker, The Human Highlight Blog, Hawk Str8Talk, Fan Scribe Chris, and hawksdawgs. You all have made this season very enjoyable as bloggers. Always providing us with great information.

See Ya Next Year!

Talking Chop Braves Caravan (Roswell, GA)

This post is just to allow me to vent about the Braves Caravan in Roswell at Publix today. Jason Heyward, Fredi G., Mike Minor, Scott Linebrink, Scott Proctor, and Steven Marek were there. I knew there was going to be a big draw for this one since J-Hey was going to be attending, but I would have never thought 600 or so people would be there. I arrived at the Publix at around 3:50pm ( the signing was between 4pm-6pm)  and was already around the 450th person in line. Now, I am not annoyed because I was so far back in line, but I am annoyed by the way the Braves staff handled things.

1st. If they were only going to allow a limited number of people to get autographs they should have posted it on the Braves Caravan website.

2nd. If they knew they weren't going to get through the whole line they should have had a staffer cut off the line so that some of us wouldn't waste 2+ hrs waiting to see if we would get an autograph.

3rd. They finally decided to tell people to go home with around 35-40 people remaining to get autographs (some had driven all the way from South Carolina).

4th. The Braves had a staffer standing at the door and only allowed a few people (possibly a family or your group) in at a time. This made the process very slow. If they had the line flowing and had people moving constantly there is no doubt everyone would have received an autograph.

5th. Just overall the event was unorganized and disappointing. It was sad to see some kids and fans who had driven hrs away get turned away when only an extra 10-15 minutes and everyone would have received an autograph.

I know that this was a free event, but if you get to an event before it even starts it seems like you would receive an autograph. The Braves should do a better job of telling people what to expect so that fans don't go home disappointed. This is warning to all the fans planning to attend a future caravan event. Arrive very early and you might get an autograph. Even if you are the last person in line, if the event ends at 6 and it is 6 don't expect an autograph. Even if it will only take a couple more minutes.

Peachtree Hoops 2011-2012 Season Free Agents. Who do they keep?

The Hawks have a number of guys who will be unrestricted free agents at the end of this season. Who do you think stays and who do you think leaves? With the Hawks now having Joe Johnson, Al Horford, Josh Smith, and Marvin Williams all on high priced contracts the Hawks might not have much to spend. Here is a list of the unrestricted free agents for the Hawks and the rest of the league. Do the Hawks resign Jamal? Are there guys hitting the free agent market that the Hawks could realistically sign and would make the Hawks better? What do you think happens?

Here is what Chad Ford had to say about the Hawks chances of resigning Jamal Crawford

Crawford is the reigning sixth man of the year, and this season he's the Hawks' leading scorer despite coming off the bench. But it's hard to see this relationship lasting much longer. With Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams and Al Horford now on the Hawks' books at big dollars, it's doubtful they'll bring back Crawford, too.

Peachtree Hoops Peachtree Hoops Trade Chatter

I know a lot of bloggers on here like to propose a different trade that they think would improve the team. This is your destination. If you have a trade  you would like propose or talk about put it here in the comments section. I think this would help out a lot of the random trade clutter on the fanpost board every other day. If you hear a new trade rumor post it on here. This can be the Peachtree Hoops Rumor Central.

Peachtree Hoops Here is a trade for S & G's

Hawks Trade:   Josh Smith, Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams, Jamal Crawford

Hawks Receive from Denver: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Nene Hilario

Hawks Lineup:

Billups

Joe Johnson

C. Anthony

Al Horford

Nene Hilario

Bench

Teague

Jordan Crawford

Mo Evans

Josh Powell

Zaza Pachulia

NBA Trade Machine has it improving the Hawks win total by +9. That trade would bring fans to games and it would take the pressure of Joe to be a star. We also get a good big man.

Phillies over Cardinals 3-2

Braves over Rockies 3-1 ALCS:

Twins over Yankees 4-2,

Braves over Phillies 4-2

World Series: Twins vs. Braves

Game 7 scenario:

Tommy Hanson vs. Francisco Leriano. Tommy Hanson is on fire. In the top of the 5th Justin Morneau comes to the plate with a runner on first. He hits a high fly ball to deep right field.... Jason Heyward climbs the wall, reaches into the front row of stands and brings the ball back and throws out the runner at first to end the innings. Hanson ends up going 8 innings as does Leriano. The score is 0-0 going into the top of the 9th. Wagner (the NL saves leader) comes in to try to shut down the heart of the Twins order. He strikes out J.J. Hardy. Joe Mauer rips a single to left. They pinch run for him and bring in Jason Pridie. Justin Morneau comes up a works the count to 3-2... Pridie runs on the pitch and Morneau hits one down the first base line....it rattles around in the corner.. Heyward picks it up as Pridie rounds third, he throws a strike to Glaus, who makes a great relay to McCann. Pridie gets under the tag, he's SAFE! Wagner goes on to retire the side. Bottom of the 9th Twins up 1-0 (could this be a repeat of 1991????) Prado leads it off.. He gets a sharp single through the right side to lead it off. Chipper now up to bat... He works the count full and ends up drawing a walk. McCann up to the plate... He pops up to the first baseman in foul territory. Glaus now up to bat... He strikes out. So now runners on first and second 2 outs with Yunel Escobar up to the plate. Escobar drills one deep to left field... but hooks foullll. Next pitch... pass ball gets by Jose Morales. Runners now on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. The count is 1-1. The next pitch.... Yunel hits a line drive over the second baseman's head into right center field. Prado scores... Chipper is rounding third, Michale Cuddyer cuts the ball off and is throwing it int to Morneau, the throw to the plate... The throw is up the first base line, Morales has it, he lunges back towards the plate, Chipper slides head first............ HE TAGS THE PLATE WITH HIS LEFT HAND BEFORE THE TAG.. HE'S SAFE!!!... BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN!

Braves win in 7 games. Bobby Cox goes out on TOP!

Peachtree Hoops Are the Hawks Better than last year?

<!--StartFragment-->

So at the end of December the Atlanta Hawks have the same record 21-10 as they had last year at the same time. Is this Atlanta Hawks team better than last year?

2009-2010

Some Quality wins:

@ Portland 97-91

Denver 125-100

@ Boston 97-86

@ Dallas 80-75

Utah 96-83

Bad Losses:

@ Charlotte 83-103

@ New Orleans 88-96 (minus Chris Paul)

Orlando 76-93 (had a 12pt lead at Half)

@ Detroit 88-94 (minus Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Gordon)

NY Knicks 107-114

@ Chicago 98-101 (after beating them by 35 at home the week before)

Cleveland 84-95 (went scoreless for 9 minutes to start the 4th)

@ Cleveland 101-106 (had a 14 point lead in the 3rd,  outscored by 13 in the fourth, a big shot clock malfunction that didn’t go our way)

So looking back on the schedule we are 1-3 against the Big 3 of the East. We have really bad losses against Charlotte, Detroit, New York, and Chicago. These games shouldn’t have even been close. But we also have some big time wins at Portland, Boston, and Dallas. All games we lost last season. Streaks: 7 W, 6 W, have lost 2 in a row twice.

Home Record: 12-3 , Road Record: 9-7

2008-2009

Quality Wins:

@ Orlando 99-85

@ New Orleans 87-88 (this New Orleans team was much better than the 09-10 team)

@ Miami 87-73

Cleveland 97-92

Denver 109-91

Bad Losses:

@ New Jersey 108-115

New Jersey 107-119 ( New Jersey wasn’t as bad as this years team, but they were still pretty bad)

Boston 85-88 (Joe Johnson misses the back end of a pair of free throws that would have tied the game with a few seconds remaining)

Looking back on the 08-09 team we had some nice wins at Orlando and New Orleans and to big wins at home against Cleveland and Denver. We were 2-3 against the Big three of the East. The only really bad losses were the New Jersey games. This Hawks team was streaky from Nov.-Dec. Started the season 6-0, then lost 4 in a row, then won 3 in a row, then lost 3 in a row in Texas, came home won 3 in a row, lost to Boston at home, then won 6 in a row.

Home Record: 14-2, Road Record: 7-8

So is this years team better than last years team? Looking back I would say this years team has had a lot more BAD losses than last years team. Some of the losses we have had this year are just inexcusable. These losses might come back to bite us at the end of the year. But I would also so we have some nice wins on the road this year that we didn’t have last year. After much thought I would say the verdict is still out on this team. They still have a lot to prove if they want to be an “ELITE” team. It starts on Saturday. They SHOULD handle the Knicks easily. I guess we will see.

What is your opinion?

Peachtree Hoops Much Better This Year

Tonight I went to my first game of th 2009 season. The Hawks are a much, much, better team this year. Not just because of the key additions to the bench, but because Josh Smith is really starting to get it. Josh Smith has looked great the first two games. He is playing within his game and not forcing it like he has in the past. I have to admit I loved seeing josh pull a three and say "NO no no no no.......(then if it went in) YEAH!!!!!!". But this team will be a lot better without those threes. They were basically turnovers. He is now hanging around the rim and driving the basketball (and not he is not as out of control as he used to be either)..... The bench we have this year is awesome. Having Crawford come off the bench is great. He can score in a hurry. He will also be an upgrade over Flip, if someone goes down for a period of time (which i hope doesn't happen, knock on wood). He is real quick and I think he could probably get by anyone. With his handles he will open up a lot of easy baskets in the paint when they have to help on defense. Joe Smith is also going to be huge. He is a 6'10" big guy that can step out and shoot the long range jumper. He is also going to be big in the maturation of our big men. All night he was talking to Horford, Zaza, and Josh.....Jeff Teague is a major  upgrade of Acie Law. Bibby is getting older in age, in basketball years, and Teague is going to be benificial in keeping Bibby fresh at the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if his minutes increase as the year goes on. The hawks won't lose anything, they will gain some defense and quickness, with him coming in and Bibby sitting. ..... Lastly, it was great seeing Joe Johnson sit for a while tonight. I was worried after the first game and I saw he had played 39 minutes in the opener, but tonight he played 30 and this will help us at the end of the year. Our personally believe our bench will not miss a beat while our starters get a rest. Teague, Crawford, Evans, Joe Smith, and Zaza. I'd say that's a pretty solid five coming off the bench. I think playing Joe 30 minutes tonight will help us on Sunday against the Lake show. I know Joe will appreciate the break. And instead of him putting up huge numbers to start the year, I think we will see him putting up big numbers at the end... Well I'm out. This seasons gonna be fun to watch.

Talking Chop Least Favorite Braves

Who are your LEAST favorite Braves? From the Past or Present name your top 5 least favorite Braves. Who are those players that you hate to see in the game or might even hate they are even a part of the team? Who are those players from the past the you love seeing on other teams because they can no longer hurt your own?

This is a list of my Least Favorite of this season

My Top 5 Least Favorite:

1.) Frenchy: It's great to see him free swinging on another team. It was great seeing him last week against the braves with 1 out, bases loaded, and swings at the first 3 pitches for a K. It's great to no longer have to watch that every season.

2.) Greg Norton: I don't know if this is his fault or bobby cox fault.  Every time he comes in for a pinch hit at bat with runners on in a tight game you can count it up as a K. He has been awful this year and I'm not sure why he wasn't released.

3.) Mike Gonzalez: He has a nice looking ERA, but to many times this year he has come in with a one run lead in the 8th and given up a solo shot to tie the game. I remember earlier in the year we were playing the phillies, he came in and gave up back to back solo shots for the phillies to take a one run lead. Lucky for us we came back and won that game, but he is a disaster waiting to happen every time he comes in. I get annoyed with his rocking back and forth too. I think it is a reason why he can't locate his pitches.

4.) Jojo Reyes/ Many Acosta: This one was a tie. Jojo Reyes was terrible at the beginning of the year. If we had instead of him for those starts we might have a few more wins. Jojo Reyes was a definite lose every time you saw his name coming up in the rotation. Manny Acosta is a classic case of a pitcher who thinks he can throw his fastball by everyone. This is the majors and these guys can hit the heat so you have to try something else.

5.) Kelly Johnson: This is another case where it is more Bobby Cox fault than KJ's. He was in the lineup for too long. He was struggling and bobby kept putting him out there and he continued to struggle. He was terrible with runners on and hitting in key situations. He tries to pull the ball way to much and it often looks like he's trying to hit homeruns therefore he pops up a lot. He is just a consistently inconsistent player.
