Blogger So Dear The Best Names in College Basketball (Pt. 1)

At this point in the year, it's too earlier to pick and choose the best players and the best teams in the nation.  But you know what we can decide on?  The best player names.  And with players like Just-in'love Smith and Tiny Gallon, how can we not?!

The first category please...

Blogger So Dear NFL Draft Profile: Sam Swank, K - Wake Forest

Swank_medium

Wake Forest kicker Sam Swank will probably sit through the 2009 NFL Draft with his usual care-free smile and laidback demeanor, but don't think his fingers won't be crossed.

The draft status of an NFL kicker is almost as unpredictable as a Ryan Lindell 46 yarder into 60 MPH winds.  And that unpredictability is magnified by Swank's recent injury woes which contributed to his most recent season being the worst of his four-year Demon Deacon career.  Still, for his career Swank was 71/93 on field goal attempts (76%) including an astounding 9/13 (69%) from beyond 50 yards.  Swank only missed one of the 125 extra point attempts he had as a Deacon...

Blogger So Dear Tony Bennett to Virginia

Tonybennett_copy_medium

Tony Bennett, head basketball coach of the Washington State Cougars for three years, will be leaving Pullman, WA to go to Charlottesville, VA, home of the Virginia Cavaliers.

Bennett's decision came as a bit of a surprise to WSU fans and players, who had grown accustomed to the slow, defensive-minded style that Bennett was known for.  In three years at Washington State - his first head coaching position - Bennett was 69-33 (0.676) with two NCAA tournament births...

Need help filling out your bracket?  Want to know which teams are sleepers this year?  Who's going to be upset in the first round?  Who's going to win it all?

You've come to the right place.  Follow these 10 guidelines and you'll be that much closer to a perfect bracket, winning your office pool or just getting revenge on your mom who picked George Mason to get to the final four because green and yellow are her favorite colors.

March Madness is finally here, let's make it a memorable one...

Blogger So Dear #10 Wake Forest vs #18 Clemson Preview

Clemson_preview_medium

Clemson finds itself in an unfamiliar place at the end of the season... in the top 25.  After several years of fast starts and disastrous finishes, the Tigers have managed to fight off the seemingly inevitable end of the year tailspin and are now a lock for the Big Dance.

They will be taking on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons who haven't lost the final home game of a season since 2004.  Wake has also only lost one home game all year, so although Wake Forest is still getting used to its place as one of the top ten teams in the nation, the Deacs will feel right at home Sunday night...

Blogger So Dear Wake Forest vs Maryland Preview

Md_preview_medium

Wake Forest will not have history on their side Tuesday when they visit the Comcast Center in College Park, Maryland, where the Deacons haven't won in over five years.  In fact, Wake hasn't beaten Maryland in any arena since 2005, which is also the last year the Deacons made that NCAA tournament.

Four years later, the Deacs are going to return to the Big Dance, while Maryland is just trying to get an invitation...

In a season full of almosts and could have beens, N.C. State does have one signature win this season.  An 82-76 win over Wake Forest.

These schools will clash again on Thursday, but this time Wake is the one with something to prove... and they'll have a chance prove it on their home court...

Blogger So Dear Wake Forest vs Duke Preview

Duke_preview_medium

Same teams.  Different situation.

Going into their first meeting this year, Duke and Wake Forest were a combined 34-2.  But after a tough stretch of ACC games, both teams are just 3-3 since that January 28 contest, struggling to get back to the form that earned each team a #1 ranking at some point earlier this year.

In fact, these teams might have more in common than you think...

Blogger So Dear Wake Forest vs. N.C. State Preview

Bsd_ncst_preview_copy_medium

Wake Forest has payback on its mind when it goes to Raleigh on Wednesday to take on an N.C. State team that has yet to win an ACC game in regulation this season.

Wake Forest (18-3, 5-3 ACC) hasn't traveled to the RBC center since February 3 of last year, when Ben McCauley dunked in a Gavin Grant miss with one second on the clock to beat the Deacons 67-65.  While Wake hasn't forgotten that loss, McCauley and the Wolfpack are just trying to remember what it's like to win an ACC game in regulation.  The last time they won a conference game in 40 minutes was February 5 of last year, just two days after they beat Wake on the buzzer beater...

Blogger So Dear Wake Forest vs Boston College Preview

Bsd_skinner_medium

Oh, how the tides have turned.

Al Skinner's Boston College team lost by 20 to Wake Forest just 32 days ago, but you would never know it by the way they're playing now.  After winning five straight, the Eagles are poised to get payback on a Demon Deacons team which has lost two in a row after defeating then #1 Duke on January 28.

Sound familiar?  It should.  It was Wake Forest who was riding a big winning streak when they went into Chestnut Hill to play a BC squad who had just lost two straight after beating then #1 UNC.

Blogger So Dear Startling Statistic: Late Game Offense

              Points per Minute

           Season .......................................2.035

           Last 8 mins of past 3 games.....1.125

The nation's eighth highest scoring team is having an interesting problem in the last eight minutes of games.  They can't score.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons (17-3, 4-3 ACC) are averaging an impressive 81.4 PPG, despite their 52 point effort against Miami last Wednesday.  In fact, the Deacons haven't scored above their average since their Jan. 11 matchup against UNC, at which point they were averaging almost 86 PPG.

So why the drop in performance?

Wake
Forest
deserves to be the number 1 team in the country, whether they want it or not.

Currently ranked #6 and #4 in the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls respectively, the Demon Deacons are looking to get back to the top spot in college basketball, a position they held just one week ago.
