UMass Nearing Decision On Starting QB For Opener

+

Whipple projects to have a starting quarterback named by the end of the weekend, with the frontrunners being Blake Frohnapfel, a 6-foot-7 graduate transfer from Marshall, and junior A.J. Doyle of Lakeville and Catholic Memorial. "Both those players can run, both those guys can make a play when the protection breaks down or something happens that way," Whipple said. "They throw the ball well on the run. So, game plan-wise, that’s a little easier. Obviously, ‘Fro’ is a little taller. Both have experience at the 1-A level (FBS). They played in big games. So those things, it’s a plus. I know A.J. a little bit better from the spring. I’ve been with him for 15 practices. We had ‘Fro’ in meetings and those things, so I’ve got to get to know him a little bit better. Both are playing really good, right now." . . .

The issue is case-by-case and overanalyzed to the point of exhaustion. But it’s still important to recognize why BC decided to back Northwestern, and effectively the principle that student-athletes don’t hold a "status of employment"

2. Eight schools are the most hated in their own states: Washington, Arizona State, BYU, Creighton, Louisville, North Carolina, Boston College and Mississippi State. Most of these are programs with one or more in-state rivals who boast similar or larger fan bases. The lone big surprise in my eyes is Boston College being the most hated team in Massachusetts since the Eagles are probably the state's flagship program. Maybe Boston College fans spread their hatred evenly among schools like UConn, Providence, Duke and Syracuse, whereas other fan bases in the state united in their dislike of the Eagles.

This is probably the schedule Boston College wishes it had last year: No true road games until league play, four games against likely top-100 teams, with the possibility of one or two more, and a few breathers tossed in as well. Alas, the run of road games (plus three more in New York) wore down the Eagles, and there was basically no hope of a recovery by New Year's. Boston College won't have a top-50 nonconference schedule this year, thanks in large part to the dead weight at the bottom of its slate. It probably won't have a top-100 nonconference schedule, and may not even land in the top 150. And that's not a problem, because let's face it: Thanks to player attrition, this isn't a team that's going to become great overnight. It doesn't need to worry about RPI concerns; it simply needs to get itself closer to .500 and show improvement as Christian goes about rebuilding the program. This schedule should help with those aims.

"Our backs today got a great lesson around the goal line," said BC coach Steve Addazio. "On the goal line on vertical (they) got hit and don’t cross the end zone. "There were some easy touchdowns, but they were too vertical and you have to run different on the goal line."

The Eagles made huge strides in Year 1 under Steve Addazio, but now they need to replace their starting QB, 2,000-yard rusher, top receiver, leader in sacks and top two tacklers. Yikes.

More on C.J. Jones transferring to Delaware

1

Jones went through spring drills at Boston College and was able to return for the 2014 season if he wanted. But the thought of playing for his home state university held great allure. "I thought I would have a great opportunity coming here with coach Brock and with it being at home," Jones said Sunday at the Carpenter Center. "The fact coach Brock wanted me to come here as a Delaware kid and he's trying to recruit more Delaware people, I thought it was the perfect match. With the athletic director [Eric Ziady] being from Boston College as well, it was just a blessing that I knew coach Brock and to have that connection here." A few minutes after Jones said that, Ziady found Jones, gave him a hug and said "Welcome home."
