MMAmania.com The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale fight card: Max Holloway vs Pat Schilling preview

Photo

Two of the youngest prospects in the UFC will meet this Friday night (June 1, 2012) as 20 year old Max Holloway takes on Minnesota grappler Pat Schilling on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Live Finale main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Max Holloway, at 20 years old, is the current youngest fighters on the UFC roster. It's hard to believe seeing someone fight in a cage who was nearly born in 1992, but here he is. Holloway wants to forget his UFC debut, a wretched showing against a seriously overmatched opponent in Dustin Poirier, and he'll get an opportunity to put it behind him on Friday night.

Pat Schilling is also a youngster who wants to wipe clean the slate of his inaugural UFC fight. Making his debut against the upstart Daniel Pineda, "Thrilling" was far from it, losing dominantly via first round submission. The Minnesota grappler has a shot at redemption against an equally inexperienced foe in Holloway.

Will Holloway mature before our eyes with a strong showing? Can Schilling get back to stopping every opponent in the first round? What's the key to victory for both men on Friday night?

Let's find out:

MMAmania.com Despite recent troubles, Dana White not planning a code of conduct for UFC fighters

ATLANTA, GA - FEBRUARY 16: UFC President Dana White speaks with the media after a press conference promoting UFC 145: Jones v Evans at Philips Arena on February 16, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship's PR team has been working overtime lately.

What with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones' recent DWI guilty plea, Arianny Celeste's domestic squabbles and a plethora of failed drug/steroids/testosterone tests, most notably by actual and intended title challengers as well as champions Nick Diaz, Cristiane Santos and Alistair Overeem, you'd think it might be time to start working up a policy on such matters.

Not the case.

UFC President Dana White still plans on taking things as a case-by-case basis (via 5thRound):

"I'm gonna take it as it comes. I hear this stuff all the time, and it seems like a lot lately. This isn't the NFL. This isn't the NBA. This is a completely different business. This is a completely different business model."

Much more from White after the jump:

MMAmania.com The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale fight card: Justin Lawrence vs John Cofer preview

Photo

Two very exciting young combatants will meet this Friday night (June 1, 2012) as Team Cruz number one pick Justin Lawrence battles wrestler John Cofer on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Live Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lawrence was hailed as the favorite to win this season, but was upset in the quarterfinals by current finalist Mike Chiesa. He is young at just 22 years old and incredibly talented in the striking department, having his way with both James Krause and Cristiano Marcello during his stint on the show. Now he's got a shot to showcase his skills at a real UFC event.

John Cofer didn't get as much hype or exposure as Lawrence, but he had one of the most entertaining fights of the entire season, losing a very back-and-forth battle against Vinc Pichel in the round of 16. He is a sturdy southpaw wrestler who has been grappling since he was five years old and is hoping that will help him against the highly-touted opponent.

Will Lawrence's flashy kickboxing score him another fantastic finish? Can Cofer's wrestling neutralize the prospect's striking skills? What's the key to victory for both men on Friday night?

Let's find out:

MMAmania.com Ultimate Fighter Live fight card: Jonathan Brookins vs Charles Oliveira preview

Brookins_oliveira_medium

Two promising young featherweights will battle it out this Friday night (June 1, 2012), as The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins battles Brazilian Charles Oliveira on The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brookins showcased a newfound intensity in his last fight, a knockout victory against Vagner Rocha in which he blasted his opponent with some brutal ground and pound. He has had his stint in the UFC delayed multiple times via injury, but he's hoping that at 100 percent, he can really make his mark in the promotion and hurt a similar opponent in Oliveira.

Charles Oliveira was once considered a "can't miss" prospect in the lightweight division, but a rough three fight skid sent him down to featherweight, where he pulled off an incredible calf slicer in his 145 pound debut. Still just 22 years old, "Da Bronx" has plenty of room for growth and can definitely be a future player in the division.

Will Brookins pound "Da Bronx" into submission? Can Oliveira continue his run of success now that he's dropped down to 145 pounds? What's the key to victory for both men on Friday night?

MMAmania.com Jason 'Mayhem' Miller retires from MMA, clears air about UFC 146 'incident' backstage

Photo

Jason Miller hasn't had a good week.

The former host of MTV's 'Bully Beatdown' pledged to quit MMA if he lost to C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146, and after rocking "The Doberman" twice on the feet, and despite coming into the bout shredded, he would go on to get outwrestled for three rounds and lose a unanimous decision. Afterwards, Dana White said Miller was 'done with the UFC' and even alluded to a backstage incident.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour today, "Mayhem" cleared the air and confirmed that he'll be stepping away from the sport.

"Yeah, I said I would [retire] and so I am. I didn't get the job done and that's what I'm saying. I'm done for right now. Who knows what the future holds but at the same time, what's the point?"

Miller was distant and cryptic at times during the conversation, talking about jumping off a bridge, then correcting himself and saying "base jumping' when asked for clarification.

'Mayhem' also had plenty to say about the reported backstage incident that had Dana White all fired up.

MMAmania.com UFC 148: Chael Sonnen asked Rousimar Palhares to help train, gets turned down

Rousimar Palhares is keeping his hands free of anything to do with Chael Sonnen

It sounds like Chael Sonnen was trying to get some extra insurance to deal with Anderson Silva's Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt skills on the ground.

According to a report from Tatame, the Republican ex-realtor had reached out to heel hook aficionado Rousimar Palhares about getting a little extra help in his pre-fight preparation before his UFC 148 middleweight title rematch, which is taking place in Las Vegas in just over a month.

"Toquinho," however, wasn't interested.

"He asked to train with me for Anderson but I'm not training anyone... Murilo said his coach has called him saying he wanted to come and train with me, but I said I won't do it."

Unsurprisingly, Palhares will be rooting for his native countryman when Sonnen fights for the title.

MMAmania.com UFC 146 results recap: Roy Nelson vs Dave Herman fight review and analysis

Dave Herman collapses after being hit with a hard punch from Roy Nelson at UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26, 2012. Photo by Esther Lin via MMA Fighting

The stakes were potentially very high last night (May 26, 2012) for both heavyweights Roy Nelson and Dave Herman on their UFC 146 main card bout in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Both men had been in the doghouse with Dana White, either for their dry sense of humor or with how the UFC president felt they were taking their careers seriously.

Herman entered the bout having been called "The white Jon Jones" by Nelson, based purely on his athleticism and potential.

So what does it mean now that "Big Country" has knocked him silly? And what's next for both intriguing heavyweight brawlers?

Follow me after the jump for our Roy Nelson vs. Dave Herman UFC 146 post-fight review and analysis.

Two undefeated heavyweight prospects stepped into the cage last night (May 26, 2012) as Stipe Miocic took on Strikeforce veteran Shane del Rosario on the UFC 146 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Someone's "0" had to go.

Del Rosario entered the bout having been a highly successful kickboxer and one of Strikeforce's "can't miss" up-and-coming fighters, while Miocic was already building a case as one of the better young heavyweights in the UFC.

Miocic had some trouble early, but what adjustment did he make to completely take over and finish this fight? And what happens next for both men?

Follow me after the jump four our Stipe Miocic vs. Shane del Rosario post-fight review and analysis.

Two men coming off tough losses duked it out in the co-main event of UFC 146 last night (May 26, 2012) in Cain Velasquez and Antonio Silva.

But out of both powerful heavyweights, only one would get back on track.

And boy did Cain Velasquez come back with a vengeance, painting the canvas red in one of the most violent bouts in recent memory.

So how did the former heavyweight champion turn the Octagon into the set of a horror film? And what's next for both heavyweights?

Frank Mir tumbles after eating a hard shot from Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26, 2012. Photo by Esther Lin via MMA Fighting

The heavyweight stakes couldn't have been higher last night (May 26, 2012) with the title on the line as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Junior dos Santos looked to defend his Heavyweight title against Frank Mir.

Dos Santos possessed some of the most dangerous boxing in the division, while Mir was capable of finishing nearly anyone with his bone-breaking submissions. With both men being so lethal, someone had to go, and unfortunately for Frank Mir, he would be that man.

So what helped dos Santos successfully defend his championship? And what happens next for both elite big-men?

MMAmania.com UFC 146 results recap: Stefan Struve vs Lavar Johnson fight review and analysis

Stefan Struve is declared the winner at UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26, 2012. Photo by Esther Lin via MMA Fighting

The all heavyweight UFC 146 main card kicked off last night (May 26, 2012) with a very intriguing battle between "The Skyscraper" Stefan Struve and Lavar Johnson in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Both men had their strengths and flaws, and both just so happened to match perfectly. Johnson being perhaps the most powerful puncher in the division but possessing an Achilles' heel of a ground game while Struve's primary weapon was his submissions and his weakness was his ability to take a big punch.

Whoever could impose their will would be the man who came out the victory.

So what fatal flaw did Johnson commit which cost him a legitimate chance at victory? Also, what happens next for both heavyweights?

Follow me after the jump for our Stefan Struve vs. Lavar Johnson UFC 146 post-fight review and analysis.

MMAmania.com Bellator 70 results recap from last night for ‘Hawn vs Weedman' in New Orleans, LA

Bellator lightweight Rick Hawn (second from left) poses with his $100,000 novelty check after winning the season six 155 pound tournament. Photo via Bellator.

Bellator Fighting Championships brought the heat last night (May 25, 2012) with Bellator 70 from the Orleans Convention Center in New Orleans, La., and it was a night of solid bouts and powerful finishes.

Despite having a title fight on the card, it was the lightweights who were given main event billing at the last minute as former welterweight standouts Rick Hawn and Brent Weedman, who had dropped down to 155 pounds for the Bellator season six lightweight tournament, duked it out for a shot at $100,000 and current champion Michael Chandler.

Weedman stuck to the gameplan in the first two rounds, aggressively mixing in leg and body kicks while trying to keep utilize his length with his punches, but Hawn countered with a strong left jab and more powerful strikes. It was an extremely even first two rounds which featured primarily stand-up but also brief clinches in which Hawn would showcase his strength while Weedman tries to utilize some knees.

While the first two rounds were up in the air, Hawn seized control of the third, scoring a pair of big takedowns with trips and not being afraid to attack from within Weedman's guard, throwing big elbows and short strikes. A late flurry from Weedman couldn't undo the damage and in the end, the judges unanimously decided in Hawn's favor.

The Olympian will likely challenge for the title early in season seven. The rest of the main card featured a trio of stoppages.

MMAmania.com UFC 146 fight card: Junior dos Santos vs Frank Mir preview

Photo

The UFC heavyweight title is on the line tomorrow night (May 26, 2012) as UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos takes on former two-time champion Frank Mir in the main event of UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dos Santos has had an incredible run through the heavyweight division, slicing through opponents like a hot knife through butter and his victory over Cain Velasquez last November to capture the division crown was a testament to that. He's hoping to start building a legacy and he can't do that without knocking off Mir, a dangerous foe at the top of the division.

Frank Mir is a two-time champion, having defeated Tim Sylvia back in 2004 and then knocking out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in 2008 to win it again. He's been on a solid run, winning three straight bouts to get right back into contention. He stepped up when there was a vacancy in the challenger slot and he's hoping to become a three-time champ.

Will dos Santos cement himself as the best heavyweight on the planet? Can Frank Mir play spoiler and potentially tap out "Cigano" on the big stage? What's the key to victory for both men tomorrow night?

MMAmania.com Grassroots run deep: Bellator lightweight Brent Weedman interview exclusive with MMAmania (Part two)

Brent Weedman (center) prepares to enter the cage for his Bellator 62 bout against J.J. Ambrose. Photo via Bellator.com

Brent Weedman realizes how difficult the challenge is ahead of him.

The season six Bellator lightweight tournament finalist had a tougher road than his opponent Rick Hawn, having to work exceptionally hard to get past semifinalist Thiago Michel in a grueling affair while Hawn viciously knocked out both of his opponents in less than two rounds combined.

Weedman will be hoping to utilize his biggest strength, which is his well-roundedness and the diversity of his attack against the former judo Olympian, who he believes is slightly more predictable.

The Louisville-based fighter will have an opportunity to live one of his dreams, winning a giant novelty check, when he battles Hawn for an opportunity to earn a title shot against Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler tomorrow night (May 25, 2012) at Bellator 70 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In part one of our interview taken from his appearance on The Verbal Submission, Weedman discussed being a new daddy and what he respects the most about Hawn as an opponent. Today for part two, he talks about forcing foes to make bad decisions, who inspires him, and what he finds most addicting about fighting in this exclusive interview.

MMAmania.com UFC 146 fight card: Cain Velasquez vs Antonio Silva preview

Cain Velasquez Antonio Silva

Two of the most terrifying heavyweights on the planet will be on display this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez takes on Antonio Silva in the co-main event of UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Velasquez is over six months removed from losing his title to Junior dos Santos and is extremely motivated to get back on track. Once hailed as the potential future of the UFC heavyweight division, the American Kickboxing Academy product is out to prove that he still can be that guy.

Antonio Silva scored a tremendous victory in 2011, scoring a second round doctor stoppage against Fedor Emelianenko, but he was put down with authority by Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semifinals. The giant Brazilian is being counted out in this fight so he's heavily motivated to prove his doubters wrong.

Can Velasquez return to form against an opponent who's had issues against AKA fighters in the past? Can "Bigfoto" stomp the former heavyweight champion? What's the key to victory for both men on Saturday night?

MMAmania.com UFC 146 press conference video and LIVE updates today (May 24) for 'Dos Santos vs Mir' in Las Vegas

Photo

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will today (May 24, 2012) hold a public press conference to promote this Saturday's (May 26, 2012) UFC 146: "Dos Santos vs. Mir" event, which will air live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The press conference will begin at 2 p.m. ET from the main lobby of the MGM Grand in downtown "Sin City."

Scheduled to attend will be the main card fighters of the evening: Junior dos Santos, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Antonio Silva, Roy Nelson, Dave Herman, Stipe Miocic, Shane del Rosario, Stefan Struve and Lavar Johnson.

Dos Santos is the current UFC heavyweight champion, having gone an impressive 8-0 inside the Octagon. He captured the title from Cain Velasquez at the inaugural UFC on FOX event last November and is looking to defend his belt for the first time. His opponent, Frank Mir is the former UFC heavyweight champion. He stepped up in place of Alistair Overeem, who tested for elevated levels of testosterone and was denied his license after removing himself from the title bout.

Velasquez is also the former UFC heavyweight champion. He suffered a shoulder injury after initially winning the title in October of 2010 and was handed his lone loss by Dos Santos during his first title defense. Now healthy, he's hoping to earn his title back starting with a victory in the co-main event.

Antonio Silva is a former EliteXC heavyweight champion. His stock rose to absurd levels after his second round technical knockout victory against Fedor Emelianenko in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, although he was brought back to earth by Daniel Cormier via knockout in the semifinals. If he can beat the former champion, he'll be right back on top, if not higher.

We'll have complete updates of the UFC 146 press conference, as well as a LIVE press conference video feed, after the jump:

Brent Weedman has had a wonderful distraction in the lead-up to his Bellator season six lightweight tournament final.

The Louisville native is a father for the first time.

While he took a little longer to get into the groove of training after his semifinal victory over Thiago Michel, Weedman is more than ready for the biggest fight of his career thus far.

The self-proclaimed "student of the universe" has looked sharp ever since dropping down to 155 pounds, advancing to his first tournament finals and he'll be taking on former judo Olympian Rick Hawn this Friday night (May 25, 2012) at Bellator 70.

Weedman spoke with MMAmania.com during a special guest appearance on The Verbal Submission and he spoke about the debut of his son, his advantages over Rick Hawn and what exactly the judo Olympian has done that has impressed him the most in part one of this exclusive interview.

MMAmania.com UFC 146 fight card: Roy Nelson vs Dave Herman preview

Photo

Two of the UFC's most intriguing heavyweights will meet this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as The Ultimate Fighter season 10 winner Roy Nelson takes on Dave Herman on the UFC 146 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nelson was on the verge of title contention before losing three of his last four fights to three of the best heavyweights in the UFC today. He's received criticism about his weight and even teased dropping down to 205 pounds, but he'll be battling at his traditional weight this weekend.

Dave Herman is a fighter that is always brought up when discussing heavyweight athleticism and potential, now he's just got to realize it. "Pee-Wee" has moved his training camp to Team Quest with Dan Henderson but that didn't help him in his last fight, a second round TKO defeat at the hands of Stefan Struve. He took some flack for his attitude and appearance by Dana White and he'll need to show he's taking things seriously this time around.

Will "Big Country" bring the pain against Herman? Can "Pee-Wee" realize his potential against perhaps his toughest test to date? What's the key to victory for both men this weekend?

Let's find out:

MMAmania.com Roy Nelson says UFC 146 opponent Dave Herman is "The white Jon Jones" at open workouts

Dave Herman swings mightily at John Olav Einemo last summer. Photo via Cage Religion

Dave Herman has been long considered a fighter with a boatload of potential, but now the talk might just be getting ridiculous.

During today's UFC 146 open workouts, Herman's upcoming opponent, Roy Nelson described the athletic Team Quest fighter as a "white version of Jon Jones."

See for yourself:

"He's a realistic threat. He's the white version of Jon Jones, tall, lanky, unorthodox, you don't know what you're going to expect

But that's not all. As referenced in our interview with him earlier this week, Herman is still a guy who hasn't completely strayed from his old partying ways.

"Big Country" couldn't help but throw an extra jab at the beleaguered UFC light heavyweight champion as well.

MMAmania.com Pee-Wee's big adventure: UFC 146 heavyweight Dave Herman interview exclusive with MMAmania.com

Photo

Dave Herman isn't your typical fighter.

While most athletes will talk about the rigors of training, the respect they have for all their opponents and how important everything is to them, "Pee-Wee" would rather talk about peanut butter and jelly waffles or his favorite beer.

Herman wasn't originally scheduled to be a part of this weekend's huge heavyweight event, but he was called on to replace an injured Gabriel Gonzaga and the Team Quest combatant gleefully stepped up to the challenge.

Now, on just three weeks' notice, "Pee-Wee" will be taking on The Ultimate Fighter season 10 winner Roy Nelson this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) on the UFC 146 main card in Las Vegas.

Herman spoke with MMAmania.com during a special guest appearance on The Verbal Submission and he talked about fighting someone he respects, the potential benefits of a short notice fight for him and his dreams of a Las Vegas afterparty in this exclusive interview.

MMAmania.com UFC 146 fight card: Stipe Miocic vs Shane del Rosario preview

Photo

Two of the brightest undefeated heavyweight prospects in the UFC will duke it out this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as Stipe Miocic takes on UFC newcomer Shane del Rosario on the main card of UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Miocic has quickly burst onto the scene in the UFC, winning his first two fights and notably finishing his last opponent via knockout inside the first minute of the first round. The Strong Style fighter has some serious power and is hoping to keep his momentum rolling against a fellow rising heavyweight.

Shane del Rosario was once the most talked about heavyweight prospect in Strikeforce, but a 2011 car accident left him with a serious back injury. He's been sidelined for over a year but is finally back and ready to make his UFC debut. Del Rosario possess elite striking skills, having been a former WBC heavyweight kickboxing champion and he should give Miocic all that he can handle inside the Octagon.

Will Miocic be able to put del Rosario away before the Californian can shake the rust off? Can "No Limits" halt Miocic's momentum? What's the key to victory for both men on Saturday night?

MMAmania.com Polar Express: Interview with Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad

Photo

Cole Konrad is keeping his fingers crossed this week.

His opponent, Eric Prindle, has been a walking voodoo curse. "The American Soldier's" original heavyweight tournament final ended in a no contest, he had a fight delayed due to illness and then he ended up being gifted the heavyweight tournament final when Thiago Santos failed to make weight.

Konrad was so eager to get a fight after only competing once in 2011 that he accepted a title fight on two week's notice. Unfortunately, Prindle again was sidelined after hurting his hand in training.

Now, finally, "The Polar Bear" will get an opportunity to defend his Bellator heavyweight title for the first time this Friday night (May 25, 2012) as he'll battle Prindle in the main event of Bellator 70, the Bellator sixth season finale.

The former NCAA Division I wrestling champion spoke with me during a guest appearance on Bloody Elbow Radio where he talked about Prindle's bad luck, wanting to keep active as a fighter and even his heavyweight physique.

MMAmania.com UFC 146 fight card: Stefan Struve vs Lavar Johnson preview

Photo

Two of the most physically imposing men in the UFC will meet this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as 6'11 Dutch fighter Stephan Struve takes on "Big" Lavar Johnson in the opening bout of the UFC 146 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Stefan Struve is still one of the youngest and most exciting heavyweights in the UFC. He's had 10 bouts in the promotion now despite just being 24 years old and is coming off two straight finishes. He's come up short whenever the thought of him as a potential contender begins to grow, but he's hoping to get past that against Johnson.

Lavar Johnson has been a terrific story for the UFC. After dropping his last two Strikeforce bouts, he's won his first two UFC fights via first round knockout, most notably putting away Pat Barry on the main card of UFC on FOX 3 earlier this month. He's stepping up on very short notice and is hoping to create some incredible momentum against Struve.

Will Struve be able to bring Johnson back down to size? Can "Big" Johnson possible topple "The Skyscraper" with his powerful fists? What's the key to victory for both men on Saturday night?

MMAmania.com Stephan Bonnar campaigning to coach opposite Forrest Griffin for next season of The Ultimate Fighter

Photo

It appears that "The American Psycho" wants to go out with a bang

Currently riding a three fight win streak, Bonnar was a guest on this past Thursday's MMA Uncensored Live on Spike TV where the 14 fight UFC veteran spoke with the show's hosts about his plans for the future.

"Well I'm on a crusade to be coaches [for TUF 16]. It only makes sense that something comes full circle and hey, if [me and Forrest Griffin] are coaches, I guarantee the fight will outdo the first one and on top of that, Forrest is a very funny guy, but I'll out-funny him. So please everybody, harass Dana White. Dana listen to the fans, let's make this happen. Don't leave him alone."

Perhaps he's hoping for a better result than Mark Hunt's recent twitter campaign to earn a title shot against Junior dos Santos.

If that doesn't work out, Bonnar does have a back-up plan.
