I gave an Oscar worthy performance after Brett Bukvich almost hit me with a pitch. I didn't get a free base for it. I then proceeded to strike out, and the umpire threw me out of the game because I shook my bat at him. What's the big deal?

Red Cup Rebellion Rebels head to Gainesville (open thread)

In last weekend's action, our Rebels led at some point in all three games but only on one.  The midweek stint with UAPB was cancelled, and we head to Florida 5-5 in our last ten games.  The Florida Gators are 7-3 in their last 10 games and come into the weekend after sweeping Alabama in their last SEC series.

Red Cup Rebellion Wildcats and Rebels seek to stop skids

Coming into this weekend series, we have a pair of teams that are a combined 7-17 in the SEC.  The Wildcats opened the season with a series victory over the Tennessee Volunteers, and they have not won a conference game since.  However, they do have a 9 game non-conference winning streak going, including Tuesday's 3-2 victory over Dan McDonnell's Louisville team.  Ole Miss comes into the weekend having lost 8 of its last 11, including Tuesday night's extra-inning defeat to Southern Miss.  One team will get back on the right track this weekend.

Red Cup Rebellion Rebels in need of morale and RPI boost (opEn tHrEAd eDiTioN!)

P4051903_medium

In Memphis last week, Tracy delivers what was probably a hanging curve.

Both the Rebels and the Golden Eagles had weekends to forget.  The red-hot eagles traveled to Memphis and lost the series; however, they were able to salvage the finale on Sunday.  The Rebels lost a one-run Friday night game for the second consecutive week, lost the series on Saturday, and then pounded out 18 hits to avoid the sweep on Sunday.  Both teams are trying to rebound and get back on the right track.

Huge. We need it for our RPI and to prevent being the third best team in the state.

Red Cup Rebellion Rebels travel to take on streaking Eagles

The #20 Golden Eagles are playing some great baseball right now.  In fact, they might be the best team in Mississippi and maybe the best behind East Carolina in the C-USA.  They come into today's contest at 18-5 and took last weekend's series against Tulane by scoring a total of 44 runs.  I know the Tulane staff has had some injuries, but it's still nuts that Southern scored that many when we could only muster 7 on the weekend.  Anyway, tonight has some very important implications for our season, RPI, and hosting in Mississippi chances.

Red Cup Rebellion On Deck: Rebels look to get back on track in Knoxville

After a rough weekend on the diamond last weekend, the Rebels will look to get their SEC record straightened out.  Ole miss comes into the weekend 16-6 (1-2 SEC) and Tennessee comes in 17-4 (1-2) after dropping last weekend's series at Kentucky.

Red Cup Rebellion The Greenwave overtakes the Rebels; Hilltoppers next test

85523527_medium

What is a hill-topper, anyway?

Twas a rough week on the diamond for the Rebels.  After a decisive victory in game 1, our offense disappeared for the final 18 innings of the series.  The Tulane pitching staff is really good, but one cannot help but worry that we are regressing the our old ways of not scoring very many runs at all.

Now, a chance at redemption against one of our mortal enemies of the baseball postseason.  Remember losing to them in 2004 in our first regional as a host?  Remember losing to them in 2009 and having to have Pomeranz pitch again to get us to the Super?  I do, and I hope that our boys do as well.

Red Cup Rebellion On Deck: The Tulane Greenwave

NEW ORLEANS - SEPTEMBER 11: Markeith Summers #16 of the Ole Miss Rebels catches a pass over Alex Wacha #8 of the the Tulane Green Wave at the Louisiana Superdome on September 11 2010 in New Orleans Louisiana. Ole Miss defeated Tulane 27-13. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

For the second time this academic year, our Rebels will take on the Greenwave.  It was one of our few wins during football season, but these two baseball teams are much better than their football counterparts.

Tulane is a good program that has experienced some down years as of late.  Last season saw the Greenwave struggle to a 32-24 record.  That's not a bad record, but it is a far cry from the #1 overall seed they earned back in 2005.  They come to Oxford with a 7-2 record and have won their last five games.

Ole Miss is doing much better this season than anyone could have imagined.  The Black Bears have won their last three and are sitting at 9-1 overall.

Red Cup Rebellion OPEN THREAD-Wednesday @ 6:30-Rebels v Governors part dos

Last night, the Rebels won in dramatic fashion 5-4.  Tonight, Redshirt freshman LHP Jack Snodgrass (1-0, 2.25 ERA) will climb the hill for Austin Peay.  Freshman RHP Mike Mayers (0-0, 7.71 ERA) will start for the Rebels.  Let's hope we score some runs in this one!

Red Cup Rebellion On Deck (& Open Thread): Austin Peay

Today and tomorrow at 6:30, our beloved Rebels will take on the Governors of Austin Peay.  So far, the Governors have not played on the road and are 4-0 at home.  They have defeated Valparaiso in a three game set and also have defeated Illinois State.  Their other game last weekend against Wisconsin-Milwaukee was rained out.

It's hard to know how good Austin Peay is, but they seem to at least be respectful each season.  They have only allowed 5 runs per game this season and have a staff ERA of 4.88.  Their opponents batting average is .259, and their staff has walked 23 and struck out 40.  Offensively, they hit .322 as a team and average 7.5 runs per game.  Frosh second baseman Jordan Hankins is batting .688 in 16 at bats.  Outfielder Rolando Gautier is batting .615 with a 1.154 slugging percentage.  Those big names might scare you, but only three players with significant (double digit) at bats are batting above .300!

Our Rebels are batting .337 which is the third best in the SEC.  Our staff ERA is 3.38.

Pitching Match-ups:

Tuesday @ 6:30 pm

Senior LHP Jack Snodgrass (0-0, 2.25 ERA)

Senior LHP Matt Tracy (1-0, 3.52 ERA)

Wednesday @ 6:30 pm

Redshirt Frosh LHP Alex Belew (1-0, 5.40 ERA)

Freshman RHP Mike Mayers (0-0, 7.71 ERA)

What are your predictions?

Red Cup Rebellion Rebels take a series on the road: how it happened

I don't think we can be disappointed with getting the series on the road against a quality opponent.  I know the meltdown on Saturday was heartbreaking, but I believe the lessons learned from this series will serve us well throughout the season. How did it happen?  I'll do my best to describe the most pivotal moments after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion On Deck: A trip to Houston

How many of you expected to be 5-0 going into this weekend?  It's a great feeling to know that we've done the best we possibly can up until this point in the season.  The verdict is still out on just how good this team is, but, let's be honest, the verdict is still out on every team at this point in the season.  Let's hope that we continue to have good starting pitching and clutch play, but we also develop strong middle relief and more power.

This weekend, the Diamond Rebels travel to southern Texas to take on the University of Houston Cougars.  The Cougars are off to their best start since 1993 and are sitting at 4-0.  They are led by first-year head coach Todd Whitting.  You may know Whitting from his days as an assistant at TCU, a very successful program.  This will be his first chance to make a statement against a power-program as a head coach.

Red Cup Rebellion RCR Baseball Preview--Who exactly is going to be playing defense?

Baseball season is only 3 days away... Yesterday, Bianco had his media day.  I watched over it and gleaned as much information as I could about who would be playing which position.  Bianco feels like he has a number of options at each position.  Also of note, it is the first time in Bianco's tenure that new players outnumber the veteran players.  Check out the position players after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion RCR Baseball Preview--Can these arms reach to Omaha?

Here we are: year ten of Mike Bianco's quest to get to Omaha.  Throughout the years, we have had some pretty good arms come through the program.  Bianco has coached Stephen Head, Mark Holliman, Lance Lynn, Cody Satterwhite, Scott Bittle, and Drew Pomeranz.  Is there another Pomeranz on the roster?  While it is unlikely that we have a top 5 pick on our roster, I think we have some good arms coming in to anchor the rotation.

Red Cup Rebellion Alumni Baseball Game 2011--Thoughts and Photos

My wife and I made the trip over to Oxford for the alumni baseball game on Saturday.  When the game was first announced by in January, I was overly excited to see the likes of Lance Lynn and Stephen Head on Swayze again.  Though Saturday's game was fun, it was not necessarily full of excitement.  However, I did get a chance to use my new Olympus 620 I got for Christmas.  I was impressed with the Olympus.  Oh, and yeah, the current squad looks pretty good too.

Red Cup Rebellion Around the SEC East--Spurrier on top

The goings on of the rest of the SEC are somewhat difficult to truly follow. Because of the number of times that JUCO and I have seen uninformed fans make sweeping judgments of opposing teams based solely on their quarterback and halfback, we decided to start a segment where, though we will talk about halfbacks and quarterbacks, we'll also talk about the other players on teams that are succeeding or failing.

Florida 2-0 (0-0 SEC)

Florida played USF last week, and once again, they let an inferior opponent hang around for a little too long. However, two of their offensive players garnered player of the week honors. Jeff Demps accounted for 255 all-purpose yards, and it looks as if he'll be their go to guy this season on offense. After many botched snaps in week one, Mike Pouncey rebounded and earned lineman of the week honors while grading out at 95%. Chris Rainey garnered "Stalker of the Week" honors after texting his girlfriend the message "Time to die." He won't be making the trip to Rocky Top. Check that one out in the 2:30 CBS time slot.

Georgia 1-1 (0-1 SEC)

A couple of weeks ago, Chris Low opined on last week's importance with this quote:  "The loser of the UGA-SC game has never advanced to the SEC championship game."  Well, SC has never been to the championship game, so that is just one of those weird ESPN style statistics.  Last week was rough for Georgia, and now they are two games behind what looks like the best team in the SEC East (SC).  Richt said that he planned on opening up the offense this week and letting Aaron Murray sling it around.  Kris Durham led the way with 3 catches for 76 yards.  This week, UGA hosts the Razorbacks.  If the Dogs lose this one, Richt's seat is starting to feel a little warm.

Red Cup Rebellion Around the SEC East: Week One

The goings on of the rest of the SEC are somewhat difficult to truly follow. Because of the number of times that JUCO and I have seen uninformed fans make sweeping judgments of opposing teams based solely on their quarterback and halfback, we decided to start a segment where, though we will talk about halfbacks and quarterbacks, we'll also talk about the other players on teams that are succeeding or failing.

Florida 1-0 (0-0 SEC)
As I turned on the game in the second half on Saturday, I saw that Florida was barely leading Miami of Ohio.  How was that possible?  What ensued was a series of fumbles and ugly offense.  Do you think that the Florida fans wanted Tebow back at all?  With only 212 yards of total offense, are they fed up with Steve Addazio?  The game ended up a less embarrassing 34-12, but that is nothing near the thrashing that Urban Meyer teams like to give cupcakes.  John Brantley ended up with 113 yards passing.  From a rushing standpoint, Demps did well to get 100+ yards.  We might not learn too much this week when they host USF, but maybe they'll demonstrate an ability to snap the ball efficiently.

Georgia 1-0 (0-0 SEC)

Saturday's whipping of Louisiana-Lafayette was the long awaited debut of redshirt freshman qb Aaron Murray.  He did well going 17-for-26 with 3 TD's and 1 Int.  QB Hutson Mason also played a little bit going 2-for-5 with a TD.  Carlton Thomas and Caleb King combined to run for 108 yards.  Their leading receiver was Kris Durham, whoever that is.  This week, the Dawgs travel to South Carolina for an 11 am match-up on ESPN2.  Many believe that the winner of this game wins the East.

For many of the Ole Miss faithful, the name Danny Hultzen probably rings a bell.  He was in Oxford just last summer making a name for himself at the plate, in the field, and on the mound.  It's hard to believe he was a freshman just last season, and he has definitely not had a sophomore slump.  All you ever wanted to know is after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion Evan Button's Nightmare: A look back at the 2009 Super Regional

It is only fitting to look back at how we've fared in the postseason while thinking about the upcoming regional.  Only a year ago, we won the Oxford Regional to advance to the Oxford Super-Regional due to the kindness of UVA.  You see, they won the UC-Irvine Regional and gave us the opportunity to win a Super at home.  Only one obstacle (besides UVA and Bianco) stood between us and the CWS.

Red Cup Rebellion On Deck: It's Hoover Time!

There wasn't a Going, Going, Gone! section because no reader wanted to endure what I would have said about Coach Bianco's coaching performance.  Also, it is the end of the school year, and I am working to get all of my stuff done.  With that in mind, here are a couple of tid-bits about this afternoons contest between USCe and our beloved Rebels.

This afternoon's game between the Rebels and the Gamecocks is an interesting match-up.  On one hand, you have a team that has lost three straight series even though it has the SEC pitcher of the year on the squad.  On the other hand, you have a 21-win SEC team who barely missed being the regular season SEC Title and is trying to play its way into a national seed.  More about the match-up after the jump.

It's gonna be packed!
