Choo will keep playing for South Korea in WBC

"GM Mark Shapiro said this morning that outfielder Shin-Soo Choo passed his physical Tuesday and will be allowed to continue playing for South Korea in the World Baseball Classic."

Fausto Carmona threw at much less than maximum effort in his first official bullpen session of spring training Saturday, gliding easily through his delivery. That's what you're supposed to do on the first day of camp when there are no fans around and no hitter in the box. Still, his hard-diving sinker veered downward violently. Victor Martinez, the Indians' catcher, turned his glove to track the ball, and he yelled to Carmona in Spanish that Hey, you could win with just that.

Spring is here

Per Castrovince: "...virtually the entire roster is already in-house here at the Cleveland Indians Player Development Comp..." Also! Fausto, Betancourt for sure and possibly Jhonny out of WBC.

Something very strange happened, though. Carmona pulled his cap down a little lower and threw the baseball as if the midges around him and on his face and neck did not exist. He gave the appearance of a man in a crisp suit walking down the street in a rainstorm, oblivious to the extreme conditions. Behind him, the Cleveland infielders gave none of the burlesque histrionics seen from Jeter and Rodriquez. The swarm had not minimized, but the Indians gave the appearance otherwise.

This is from Verducci's book via Jen Blanchard's review at Swerbs.

GB's and K's

No surprises where Carmona and Sowers (and Byrd) and Lee land.

Gregorio Rosario! (and everyone else)

Lastoria takes a stab at organizing the minor league depth. I want to see a series between Columbus and Akron. They both look to be fun rosters.

Goleski earns his way out of here

From BA" ""Cleveland Indians Released: OF Ryan Goleski ... Unbeknownst to Oakland, Goleski had wrist surgery during the ‘06 offseason, but that didn’t stop the A’s from attempting to work out a trade during spring training ‘07 to keep the outfielder. Cleveland refused the overture and paid $25,000—or half the Rule 5 fee—to bring Goleski back to the organization. Two tough years in Double-A later, during which his slugging percentage peaked at .429, Goleski, now 26, is free to sign with any team.""

Adam Miller, however, is favored to win the job. The Indians are still buzzing about the way he threw in the Dominican Republic this winter. They think he can benefit from being around Wood.

Byrd pulling a Clemens?

""A FOXSports.com report on Wednesday morning put an end to speculation about where the 38-year-old free-agent right-hander would end up to start the season. "I got some really nice offers. That's what made it hard," said Byrd. "[There were some] nice offers from very competitive big-time teams that just need someone to fill in at the back end of their rotation. I also got an offer or two from small-market teams that said they wanted me to come in and be their No. 1 or [No.] 2 guy.""

Shoppach signed, Aubrey outrighted

and to complete the 100% copy/paste job from Castro's blog: ""The Indians have avoided salary arbitration with Kelly Shoppach, who signed a one-year deal today. The Tribe has not gone to arbitration with a player since Jerry Browne and Greg Swindell in 1991. Also today, Michael Aubrey, designated for assignment when Carl Pavano was signed last week, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus. Aubrey will be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training camp.""

Choo in WBC, but not in Military?

from Castrovince: ""The Indians have agreed to let Choo play for Korea in the World Baseball Classic. Choo, who is expected to be the Tribe's starting right fielder this season, is on Korea's provisional roster. The final 28-man roster will be announced by Feb. 24. This time around, the military exemption is not expected to be offered to the Korean players, regardless of how the team fares. But the Indians believe Choo will be able to avoid his military obligation. "We're confident it won't be an issue," general manager Mark Shapiro said.""

The Indians plucked Pavano out of a discount bin of starters trying to revive their careers after major injuries. The Tribe also looked at Mark Mulder, Kris Benson, Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon before ultimately deciding Pavano had the best combination of performance upside and the sheer physical ability to take the mound early and often this season.

Braunecker is all, "Extend Lee"

"If they want to discuss it, we're open to the discussion," said Darek Braunecker, Lee's agent. "That ball's in their court, in that regard."

DeRosa?

Hat tip to our Orioles friend, but not you know who. Castro says something is brewing. What are people's thoughts?

Jhonny Bhaseball

"Let's let all the pieces fall into place," said Shapiro. "I'm playing on so many different infielders and so many different positions right now. The answer changes every day. "He's been good at third," said Atkins. "Very smooth. No issues. All our reports on him have been good."

40-Man Decisions - Who ya Got?

OMG Donnelly gives himself away for nothing

No surprise here. "Those are guys who showed some glimpses of pitching effectively," Shapiro said of Donnelly and Rincon earlier this month. "They are guys we'll maintain a dialogue with this winter."

Lee likely to start 2009 at Kinston

The Tribe once again dipped into the international waters and signed Taiwanese right-hander Chen-Chang Lee to a Minor League deal Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not announced. A candidate for next spring's World Baseball Classic, Lee will report to the Tribe's fall instructional league in Goodyear, Ariz., this week, and he'll likely begin his professional career at Class A Kinston next season.

Westbrook to have birthmark removed during breast augmentation?

"Westbrook will see hip specialist Dr. Thomas Byrd in Nashville, Tenn., on Thursday to determine if he needs arthroscopic surgery on his right hip." "It fits real well into our time frame," Soloff said. "He is three months out from the elbow surgery. This would dovetail perfectly into his throwing program."

Olympic Baseball Schedule

In the interest of all things convenient, at Jay’s suggestion, I am linking his Fanpost about the Indians farmies on teams Canada and USA. It contains a handy schedule that breaks out TV and Internet viewing. I’ll shamelessly request people rec this Fanshot so that it pops up to the top and stays handy throughout the tournament as the Indians season continues and LGT content pushes the schedule down/off the page.
