Santo Statue Dedication Thread
Has anyone heard anything about the ceremony for Ron's statue. I'll be coming in from Pennsylvania just for that game but I've heard nothing. I didn't know if they posted it in the local paper or what. I've never gone to a statue dedication before so I have no clue what goes on or what time it even starts.
I figured we could use a thread for anyone else with questions or general discussion alone about this day. I just basically wanted to know what time it starts and what they do at these ceremonies?
OT - If you could see a rematch in any game, any sport, which one would it be?
This team stinks, we all know that. I am over talking about how bad they are.
I was listening to a local (Pittsburgh) sports radio station, 93.7 THE FAN, and they were discussing an interesting topic. The host proposed a question: "If you could see a rematch in any sporting event you've ever seen, which one would it be?" Not sporting events you would have liked to see (I originally thought 1908 WS). I know we have all been heated after a loss and thought man , if we played them 10 times we'd beat them 9. Think of a losses that you would like to see a rematch in to get another shot.
Most people who called in said last years SB loss to the Packers or the '95 (I think) loss to the Cowboys. A few people actually called in and wanted to see a rematch of a certain MMA fight.
I said the 2003 NLDS. Not to bring up bad memories but with our pitching staff that year I thought we were unstoppable in a 7 game series. Everyone knows how that went so we don't need to get into specifics about that game 6. But to get our minds off this Cubs team, even for a moment...If you could see a rematch of any sporting event, which one would you choose to see?
Pittsburgh Writer Blames Victim for Wearing Giants Jersey
John Steigerwald is a Pittsburgh Sports writer. I didn't hear about this until listening to a local sports station tonight. You may not be someone who wears a jersey to games but there is absolutely NO WAY this guy should be blamed for getting mugged.
I personally wear a Cubs jersey to all my games at PNC Park and fortunately have only had one incident where things came close to becoming physical. I don't see anything wrong with wearing a jersey or cheering on your team unless you are being very obnoxious or crude.
Cubs to ask VCU and Butler Coach to sing.
Nice story about Coach Smart and his grandfather at Wrigley.
First Baseball Game Ever Played
I don't remember this ever being posted. If it has it's good enough to bring up again. This is a clip from a Bob and Tom in the morning about the first baseball game ever played. Absolutely hilarious.
Pujols and LaRussa exchange words.
Just competitive fire, heat of the battle moment or actual division in the clubhouse? You decide for yourselves but I don't think it's a big deal.
One thing is for sure. We are very fortunate the Cards haven't run away with this thing yet. No matter how much I try and give up on this season they give me reasons to keep holding on.
Found this pic in my iPhoto tonight and wanted to share it with everyone. It's one of my favorites.
Ultimate Wedding Contest
You may remember a couple of weeks ago I posted a pic of my fiance and I after I proposed to her outside of Wrigley Field.
http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2009/12/31/1228476/a-quick-story-i-knew-only-bcbers
Well she entered us in an ultimate wedding contest on this website and her write up is really Cubs themed. Anyways to make a long story short, we need as many votes as possible in 7 weeks. I thought if anybody would appreciate her write up it would be BCBers. All you have to do is click the link, put in your e-mail and a password. The website will end you an email with a link to click. Click the link and you're done.
It really is fast and dosen't take long. Please help us out. Thanks!!
A quick story I knew only BCBers would appreciate:
I've been planning on proposing to my girlfriend of 8 years. We live near Pittsburgh but our favorite place in the world is Wrigley Field.
I planned on making a trip to Chicago and popping the big question at Wrigley somewhere. Once I saw they had an ice skating rink outside I knew that was the spot.
I custom made her a Cubs jersey with my last name on the back and gave that to her before I gave her the ring. Here's a pic. Just had to share it with someone who would appreciate where it was.
Prime 9 Players Not in HOF (MLB Network)
The MLB Network has a series called Prime 9. They have many topics like Prime 9 shortstops or All-Star moments where they have experts lists their top 9 in that category.
I watched the Prime 9 Players Not in Hall of Fame. I was just able to catch the tail end of it but saw that they had Mark McGwire at #2 and #10 at #1. If you don't know who #10 is look him up on Al's top 100 Cubs of all time and don't look too far from the best Cub of all time.
They had some ex players give testamonies on Ronny and hearing what his peers had to say about him really gives you chills. It is still beyond me why he is not in there and I for one won't go to Cooperstown until he is (I know that they won't care but it won't feel right to me). What was more astonishing to me was that there are only 10 third basemen in there as of now.
For those of you who do not have this channel I highly recommend finding out how to get it. If you've been reading BCB in the past 3 months you read nothing but good reviews about it and they are all deserving. For those of you that do have it you know what I'm talking about.
MLB Network's 30 Clubs in 30 Days
For those of us lucky enough to get the MLB Network. They are doing a series called 30 clubs in 30 days in which they give in depth analysis on the teams. They interview players, managers, and GMs as well.
They will be doing the Cubs on March 10 at 5:30 ET. I know it's early so this is just a heads up.
What's the Cubs' Record on your Birthday?
Since I sprained my ankle playing basketball and have nothing to do all day I got curious. What is the Cubs record on my birthday?
I started counting from the year I was born which is 1985 (The Cubs lost this day). My record is 7-13. That includes 3 off days and the strike.
I've been a member here since 2006 so if this was covered already, sorry. I'm not sure if this should have been put under fanshots but if it belongs there and you can move it, Al, please move it.

NBA TV Fan Vote of the Week
I know many of you on here live in the Chicagoland area and already will get this game on CSNC. However, keep in mind that many Bulls fans do not get to see their team play very often. I live in the Pittsburgh area and am a big fan of the Bulls, Cubs, and Bears.
Every week NBATV has a fan vote for the game that they will show that Tuesday night. Tonight it is the Rockets and Celtics which will be a great game. Next Tuesday the Bulls will play the Hawks and I'd love to be able to watch (as I'm sure many others would who wouldn't ordinarily get the game).
All you have to do is go to nba.com and vote for the Bulls game. I already have the link set for you so it won't take much navigating. 30 seconds is all I ask.
Parking Question
I am a recent college graduate with a degree in Elementary Education. For a graduation gift, my girlfriend, a Cubs fan of 6 years (not by choice) bought me the entire Cubs/Orioles series. We are driving over from Pittsburgh and staying with relatives in Coal City. We will be driving up for the games on Tuesday and Wednesday and will have a hotel for the Thursday game because we have to leave right after that.
I have never had to drive to Wrigley. I have always had a hotel and took the L to the game. Hotels were ridiculously expensive this time. Anyways, I was wondering where would be a good place to park. I realize it will be expensive but I just need to know of a place to park.
Al, I plan on stopping by for the first game and maybe sitting with you guys if thats ok. I am at Wrigley once or twice a year but never stopped by to say hello. Left field bleachers up at the top if I remember from before...
P.S. What a game today!!!!
How do you see it happening?
After watching the Cubs Forever special on WGN, I had to go out and get the book. I got a Barnes and Noble gift card in a card during my college graduation party and thought I'd use it to buy the book. This book is amazing. The pictures are fantastic. I haven't read through the entire book yet but I did skip to the last chapter "The Hope."
If you watched the television broadcast of Cubs Forever you would know that this bchapter talks about what will happen WHEN the Cubs win the World Series. It has testimonies of former players, broadcasters, and fans that say how they see the Cubs winning the world series.
The last paragraph was the thoughts of the author, Bob Vorwald. Reading this brought tears to my eyes. I just had to share it with you guys and girls on here.
"For me, thanks to some inclement weather and inexplicable networking scheduling, it's an unheard-of World Series day game at Wrigley Field. The shadows cross the pitcher's mound in the top of the nineth as the Cubs nurse a one-run lead. With one out, the runners at first and third take a lead, and there is a one-out ground ball to short. The flip goes to second, then quickly over to first for a coming-full-circle Tinkers-to-Evers-to-Chance double play, and the wait is finally over. As the players mob each other on the field, I take a photo of my father out of my pocket for a quick glance of thanks, hug my sons who are sitting with me, then reach under my seat for the bottle of champagne I've managed to sneak in (you have to put that press pass to good use). I'll pop the cork and join in the greatest roar in Chicago history. After the bedlam on the field subsides a bit, I shift my gaze to that beautiful green scoreboard and watch Fred Washington raise a white flag emblazoned with the ultimate W. The next day I will go downtown with the WGN crew , and we will televise the most joyous parade you could ever imagine. I can't wait."
Now if you say you haven't imagined what it will be like when it happens, your lying. I want to know how people on here see the Cubs winning the World Series.
I see it as game 5 or 6. The streets are as packed as the stadium is because the Cubs are home of course. It is the top of the nineth, 2 outs, men on second and third. Cubs are up by only one run. Base hit puts the Cubs down. Kerry Wood on the mound. The hit is a fly ball to left field, deep enough to scare us but not really that close after all. Soriano does his hop and catches the winning out. I am in the streets because I didn't have enough money to buy the tickets on StubHub. I traveled from Pittsburgh just to stand in the streets with my dad and uncles. People all around are in tears. Nobody leaves the stadium or streets until the morning. Nobody goes to work the next day.
How do you see it?
OT: Bulls get #1 Pick
I was flipping back and forth during the game tonight because the NBA draft lottery was on tonight. The Bulls had a let-down year as some people see it (they were supposed to be very good). Anyways, the Bulls had a 1.7% chance of getting the number one pick they get it! For those of you who don't follow the NBA, there are two clear cut choices for the first pick: Michael Beasley out of Kansas St. and Derrick Rose out of Memphis.
I say go with Rose. He has the capability of being a Deron Williams or Chris Paul type player. Who would you take?

Memorial Day Weekend @ PNC
We've talked about this before on here but with Memorial Day weekend coming up we're once again playing the Pirates (which is fine by me). I go to every Cubs game at PNC Park and I've seen some BCBers say they were coming out. I think it would be great if we could meet somewhere just to put faces to screen names.
I usually sit in the left field bleachers which are only $9 a ticket. Don't be fooled by the cheap price, they are still good seats. Say something if you are planning on coming out and if you would be up for meeting somewhere or even sitting in the bleachers. It is usally just me and my girlfriend there so it would be nice to have some more blue out there.
Top Web Gems (Baseball Tonight)
I'd like to see Reed's catch make the top web gems of the week so let's all get on and vote for it. It will probably win anyways but let's make sure that happens. Here's the link. The poll is in the bottom right. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/index
The best Cubs catch I've ever seen. DeRosa's reaction was just priceless. I have to make the post 75 words so I hope this puts it over.
This is my dog, Wrigley. Just trying out this FanPost thing.
Pics from PNC 4/7/08
This was a very bad game just as Al said. The worst part was the Pirate "fans" who were there in full force just because it was opening day. I don't expect half of them to be there for Wednesday's game which will be great because it was easier to find parking (which is another issue). I do think PNC Park is an excellent field but it isn't even on the same level as Wrigley.
Cubs/Pirates Series
Any BCBers from Pittsburgh planning on going to any of the games next week. I'll be at every game this season and figured we should meet up sometime either at the game or after. I usually sit in the GA bleachers.
Congrats to Kerry
Without sounding sappy, I could not be happier for Kerry Wood today. Here's a guy who was in the top 3 of the best pitchers at the time (if not the best) who had a sudden halt on his career. With the way he was getting injured on comeback attempts he could have very easily given up and figured there was nothing he could do. He could have very easily tried to restart on another team *cough prior*.
No, this guy worked his tail off and was determined to come back. Kerry was probably the only guy in the world who knew he was coming back. Just because he got a save today means he's back? No, but I couldn't be happier seeing him out there contributing like he did today. It will be interesting to see how he handles his job as closer throughout the season.
As for now, here's to you Kerry!
1907 Champs plaque...
I have a 1908 World Series plaque hanging in my room. It lists all of the players and the scores of the WS games. I've been looking for the 1907 WS plaque to hang next to it but cannot find it anywhere! Has anyone ever even seen one of these or know where I can get it. I haven't even seen in the shops around Wrigley.
Here's what my 1908 plaque looks like. http://www.fansedge.com/1908-Chicago-Cubs-World-Series-Champions-Team-13x16-Plaque_154519549_PD.html
Saving room for a 2008 by the way!!!!!
Curtain Calls
One thing that I noticed all through the 2007 season were the standards for an appropriate curtain call. The curtain calls that I remember were after a fantastic games that will be remembered forever.
This season I notice fans wanting players to give curtain calls for far inferior games compared to the games in the past and the players giving them one. I have noticed a couple of times this post season alone. Now I realize that it is the post season but a Kenny Lofton 2 run homer in the 2nd does not deserve a curtain call. I don't care who he used to play for. Am I right or wrong here?
Pittsburgh Cubs Fans
I was trying to get an idea of how many BCBers in here are from the Pittsburgh area. I thought we could get together in the next few days to watch the NLDS.
I was thinking maybe Hi-Tops but I'm open to any other ideas.
It would be nice if we all met at PNC Park for games next year so it's not me vs. the 20 other people in the GA bleachers.
